On Friday, November 8, typhoon Haiyan (category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale) hit the Philippines at 4:40 a.m. local time. With wind speeds of more than 300 km/h, the typhoon moved west-northwest across the islands of Samar and Leyte, triggering numerous storm surges that caused extensive destruction.
