    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To portray the median household income within each racial category idetified by the US Census Bureau, we conducted an initial analysis and categorization of the data. Subsequently, we adjusted these figures for inflation using the Consumer Price Index retroactive series via current methods (R-CPI-U-RS). It is important to note that the median household income estimates exclusively represent the identified racial categories and do not incorporate any ethnicity classifications. Households are categorized, and median incomes are reported based on the self-identified race of the head of the household.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset presents the median household income across different racial categories in Austin. It portrays the median household income of the head of household across racial categories (excluding ethnicity) as identified by the Census Bureau. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into economic disparities and trends and explore the variations in median houshold income for diverse racial categories.

    Key observations

    Based on our analysis of the distribution of Austin population by race & ethnicity, the population is predominantly White. This particular racial category constitutes the majority, accounting for 59.90% of the total residents in Austin. Notably, the median household income for White households is $98,608. Interestingly, despite the White population being the most populous, it is worth noting that Asian households actually reports the highest median household income, with a median income of $119,954. This reveals that, while Whites may be the most numerous in Austin, Asian households experience greater economic prosperity in terms of median household income.

    Household income includes income of the householder and all other people 15 years and older in the household, whether or not they are related to the householder. Median is the point that divides the household income distributions into two halves: one-half with income above the median and the other with income below the median. The median is based on the income distribution of all households, including those with no income.

    This dataset provides information about the median family income in Austin (SD23 measure EOA.B.6). Median family income (MFI) is calculated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help set income limits that determine eligibility for assisted housing programs. This dataset includes the MFI calculated by HUD for the Austin-Round Rock MSA and the United States. For years prior to FY 2016, HUD reported on the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA instead of the Austin-Round Rock MSA.
