Its entertainment industry has generated plenty of tourism and includes world famous beaches, shopping, motion picture studios, and amusement parks. The Hollywood district is known as the “movie capital of the U.S.” and has its historical roots in the country’s film industry. Its port, the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are aggregately one of the world’s busiest ports. The Port of Los Angelesgenerated some ****** million U.S. dollars in revenue in 2019.

This makes the Seattle metro area the **** largest metropolitan area in the United States, by population. However, Seattle is in fourth place among the 20 largest metro areas in terms of household income, which stood at ****** U.S. dollars in 2019. This is by far more than the average household income in the United States. Household income in Washington is on a similar high level. In 2021, the federal state of Washington was ranked **** in terms of household income among the states of the U.S. The city of Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. It has about ******* residents and is among the ** largest cities in the United States. Seattle has always been an important coastal seaport city and a gateway to Alaska. The importance of the city and metro area is also due to fact that some of the biggest companies worldwide started in Seattle during the 1980s. Companies like Amazon and Microsoft are still based in the Seattle area in the state of Washington.

With a population of over *** million inhabitants in 2011, Los Angeles is the second largest city in America, following only New York. The Los Angeles metro area also ranked second among U.S. metro areas in terms of gross metropolitan product, second again only to New York City metro area, which came in with a GMP of USD ***** trillion to Los Angeles’ *** billion USD in 2011. Chicago metro area ranked third with GMP of *** billion U.S. dollars. Washington metro area ranked fourth with *** billion U.S. dollars in 2011. Despite Los Angeles’ high GDP, L.A. did not do as well as some cities in terms of median household income. Los Angeles ranked 11th with a median household income of ****** U.S. dollars annually in 2013. This was lower than the median household income of the United States in 2013, which came in at ****** U.S. dollars annually.

Located in Southern California, Los Angeles is home to Hollywood, the famous epicenter of the U.S. film and television industries. The United States is one of the leading film markets worldwide, producing *** films in 2011, many of them produced by Hollywood-based studios. In 2012, movie ticket sales in North America generated over **** billion U.S. dollars in box office revenue. Famous Hollywood actresses earn millions annually, with the best paid, Angelina Jolie, earning ** million U.S. dollars between ********* and *********. Second on the list was Jennifer Lawrence with earnings of ** million U.S. dollars.

In 2022, the Midland metro area in Texas had the highest per capita personal income in the United States. This was followed by the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metropolitan area in California.

Modern cities are engines of production, innovation, and growth. However, urbanization also increases both local and global pollution from household consumption and firms’ production. Do emissions change proportionately to city size or does pollution tend to outpace or lag urbanization? Do emissions scale differently with population versus economic growth or are emissions, population, and economic growth inextricably linked? How are the scaling relationships between emissions, population, and economic growth affected by environmental regulation? This paper examines the link between urbanization, economic growth and pollution using data from Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the United States between 1999 and 2011. We find that the emissions of local air pollution in these MSAs scale according to a ¾ power law with both population size and gross domestic product (GDP). However, the monetary damages from these local emissions scale linearly with both population and GDP. Counties that have previously been out of attainment with the local air quality standards set by the Clean Air Act show an entirely different relationship: local emissions scale according to the square root of population, while the monetary damages from local air pollution follow a 2/3rds power law with population. Counties out of attainment are subject to more stringent emission controls; we argue based on this that enforcement of the Clean Air Act induces sublinear scaling between emissions, damages, and city size. In contrast, we find that metropolitan GDP scales super-linearly with population in all MSAs regardless of attainment status. Summarizing, our findings suggest that environmental policy limits the adverse effects of urbanization without interfering with the productivity benefits that manifest in cities.

In 2022, the Detroit metro area GDP amounted to ****** billion U.S. dollars, an increase from the previous year. Detroit's GDP Between 2001 and 2022, the GDP of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro area rose from ****** billion U.S. dollars in 2001 to ****** billion U.S. dollars in 2021, dipping in 2009 to ****** billion U.S. dollars. Despite a rise in GDP, the city of Detroit filed for bankruptcy in July 2013 with debts of approximately ** billion U.S. dollars. Detroit was the largest municipality to file for bankruptcy since 1953. Second largest was Jefferson County, Alabama, which filed in 2011 with debts of approximately *** billion U.S. dollars. In 2021, the Detroit metro area had a population of around 4.36 million inhabitants. City of Detroit Detroit was once a major production hub of the American automobile industry, but has since suffered decline as car manufacturers faced international competition and automobile production was moved out of the city. As a result, workers left Detroit and the population fell. In 2019, Detroit had a resident population of roughly ******* people, ranking **** on the list of largest U.S. cities, but has since fallen off the list of the ** most populous cities in the U.S. Poverty remains a problem for the city and many buildings remain empty and derelict. Crime rates also indicate the extent of Detroit’s decline. Detroit was the second most dangerous city in America in 2022, with ***** crimes per 100,000 residents.

In 2022, the New Orleans-Metairie, LA metro area recorded the highest homicide rate of U.S. cities with a population over 250,000, at **** homicides per 100,000 residents, followed by the Memphis, TN-MS-AR metro area. However, homicide data was not recorded in all U.S. metro areas, meaning that there may be some cities with a higher homicide rate. St. Louis St. Louis, which had a murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate of **** in 2022, is the second-largest city by population in Missouri. It is home to many famous treasures, such as the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, Washington University in St. Louis, the Saint Louis Zoo, and the renowned Gateway Arch. It is also home to many corporations, such as Monsanto, Arch Coal, and Emerson Electric. The economy of St. Louis is centered around business and healthcare, and boasts ten Fortune 500 companies. Crime in St. Louis Despite all of this, St. Louis suffers from high levels of crime and violence. As of 2023, it was listed as the seventh most dangerous city in the world as a result of their extremely high murder rate. Not only does St. Louis have one of the highest homicide rates in the United States, it also reports one of the highest numbers of violent crimes. Despite high crime levels, the GDP of the St. Louis metropolitan area has been increasing since 2001.

Previous Martin Prosperity Institute Insights have looked at the relationship between the population and GDP share for U.S. metropolitan areas. This Insight will look deeper into these findings, by looking at metros in relation to two additional variables-awarded patents and Creative Class occupations. While previous Insights have looked at metro population and GDP shares in relation to U.S. totals, this Insight will examine the percentage shares of each of these four variables relation to the U.S. metro total.

The area is part of a larger U.S. Census division named Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI, the country's ****-largest metropolitan area composed of ** counties in Minnesota and *** counties in Wisconsin. This larger area in turn is enveloped in the U.S. Census combined statistical area called Minneapolis-St. Paul-St. Cloud, MN-WI with an estimated population of **** million people in 2022, ranked the **** most populous in the U.S.
