    Description

Knowing the consistency of water quality sampling in lakes surrounded by a variety of racial and ethnic communities is important for potential policy uses and to assess community impacts. By using the 2010 US Census race and ethnicity demographic block group data, we analyzed the frequency (i.e., number of years and consistency) of lake water quality sampling according to racial and ethnic demographics in surrounding neighborhoods. Our approach classified human communities near lakes as predominantly White or people of color (POC), and Hispanic or non-Hispanic (NH). Associated R analysis scripts can also be found in this folder. Our data and approach can be used for future studies seeking to analyze environmental monitoring practices in relation to human demographic variables, particularly from US Census data.

    Description

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Voting district is the generic name for geographic entities such as precincts, wards, and election districts established by State governments for the purpose of conducting elections. States participating in the 2010 Census Redistricting Data Program as part of Public Law 94-171 (1975) provided the Census Bureau with boundaries, codes, and names for their VTDs. Each VTD is identified by a 1- to 6-character alphanumeric census code that is unique within county. For the 2010 Census, Kentucky and Rhode Island are the only States that did not provide voting district boundaries as part of Phase 2 (the Voting District Project) of the Redistricting Data Program and no VTDs exist for these States in the 2020 Census data products. Note that only Montana and Oregon do not have complete coverage of VTDs for the 2020 Census.

    Variables measured
Multi-Racial White Population, Multi-Racial White Population as Percent of Total Population of counties in Michigan, Multi-Racial White Population as Percent of Total Multi-Racial White Population of Michigan
    Measurement technique
To measure the rank and respective trends, we initially gathered data from the five most recent American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates. We then analyzed and categorized the data for each of the racial categories identified by the U.S. Census Bureau. Based on the required racial category classification, we calculated the rank. For geographies with no population reported for the chosen race, we did not assign a rank and excluded them from the list. It is possible that a small population exists but was not reported or captured due to limitations or variations in Census data collection and reporting. We ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified racial categories and do not rely on any ethnicity classification, unless explicitly required. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description

Summary File 2 contains 100-percent United States decennial Census data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and group quarters occupancy. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (owner-occupied or renter- occupied). The 100-percent data are presented in 36 population tables ("PCT") and 11 housing tables ("HCT") down to the census tract level. Each table is iterated for 250 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), and 39 Hispanic or Latino groups. The presentation of tables for any of the 250 population groups is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people, that is, if there were fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area.

    Variables measured
Non-Hispanic Other Race Population, Non-Hispanic Other Race Population as Percent of Total Population of cities in Ogemaw County, MI, Non-Hispanic Other Race Population as Percent of Total Non-Hispanic Other Race Population of Ogemaw County, MI
