ZCTAs are a geographic product of the U.S. Census Bureau created to allow mapping, display, and geographic analyses of the United States Postal Service (USPS) Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes dataset. They are areal representations of ZIP Codes, and not all ZIP Codes are represented by ZCTAs (for example, ZIP Codes associated with PO Boxes). For a list of all ZIP Codes within or partially within the borders of the City of Detroit, please refer to our City of Detroit USPS Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes dataset.

More information on ZCTAs, and how they differ from ZIP Codes, can be found on the US Census Bureau's website.

    Description

These are the full-resolution boundary zip code tabular areas (ZCTA), derived from the US Census Bureau's TIGER/Line Shapefiles. The dataset contains polygons that roughly approximate each of the USPS 5-digit zip codes. It is one of many geography datasets available in BigQuery through the Google Cloud Public Dataset Program to support geospatial analysis. You can find more information on the other datasets at the US Geographic Boundaries Marketplace page . Though they do not continuously cover all land and water areas in the United States, ZCTAs are a great way to visualize geospatial data in an understandable format with excellent spatial resolution. This dataset gives the area of land and water within each zip code, as well as the corresponding city and state for each zip code. This makes the dataset an excellent candidate for JOINs to support geospatial queries with BigQuery’s GIS capabilities. Note: BQ-GIS is in public beta, so your GCP project will need to be whitelisted to try out these queries. You can sign up to request access here . This public dataset is hosted in Google BigQuery and is included in BigQuery's 1TB/mo of free tier processing. This means that each user receives 1TB of free BigQuery processing every month, which can be used to run queries on this public dataset. Description

This dataset represents an ongoing effort to approximate the geographic extents of 5 digit zip codes. The dataset was produced using a combination of methods and is based on several sets of source data. Methods include: 1) using local zip code polygon data obtained from counties and cities contained within these counties; 2) Identifying place locations (city, town, places) from the postal service website and address information system (AIS) and as a last result, building theissen polygons around usps places in unpopulated areas; and 3) editing line work using the 2000 Census TIGER line file's zip code attributes. In addition, AGRC has used the locations of mailing addresses known to be valid to fine tune this dataset.

    Description

ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) five-digit ZIP Code service areas that the Census Bureau creates using whole blocks to present statistical data from censuses and surveys. The Census Bureau defines ZIP Code Tabulation Areas by allocating each block that contains addresses to a single Code Tabulation Areas, usually to the ZCTA that reflects the most frequently occurring ZIP Code for the addresses within that tabulation block. Blocks that do not contain addresses but are completely surrounded by a single Code Tabulation Areas (enclaves) are assigned to the surrounding ZCTA; those surrounded by multiple ZCTAs will be added to a single ZCTA based on limited buffering performed between multiple ZCTAs. The Census Bureau identifies five-digit Code Tabulation Areas using a five-character numeric code that represents the most frequently occurring USPS ZIP Code within that ZCTA, and this code may contain leading zeros. There are significant changes to the 2010 Code Tabulation Areas delineation from that used in 2000. For 2010 only legitimate five-digit areas are defined so there is no longer full nation-wide coverage. The 2010 ZCTAs will better represent the actual Zip Code service areas because the Census Bureau initiated a process before creation of 2010 blocks to add block boundaries that split polygons with large numbers of addresses using different ZIP Codes.Data users should not use Code Tabulation Areas to identify the official USPS ZIP Code for mail delivery. The USPS makes periodic changes to ZIP Codes to support more efficient mail delivery. The Code Tabulation Areas process used primarily residential addresses and was biased towards ZIP Codes used for city-style mail delivery, thus there may be ZIP Codes that are primarily nonresidential or boxes only that may not have a corresponding ZCTA.ZIP Code Tabulation Area CodesThe Census Bureau identifies 5-digit ZCTAs using a five-character numeric code. For ZCTA codes that reflect the 5-digit ZIP Code, the last two characters of the ZCTA code will be numeric. For example, the ZCTA code "00601" represents the 5-digit ZIP Code 00601. The ZCTA delineation process did not recognize ZIP codes ending in "00", such as "29000", as valid 5-digit ZCTA codes. For More Information go to: https://tigerweb.geo.census.gov/tigerwebmain/TIGERweb_geography_details.html

    Abstract

A crosswalk table from US postal ZIP codes to geo-points (latitude, longitude)

    Documentation

    Data source: public.opendatasoft.

The ZIP code database contained in 'zipcode.csv' contains 43204 ZIP codes for the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa. The database is in comma separated value format, with columns for ZIP code, city, state, latitude, longitude, timezone (offset from GMT), and daylight savings time flag (1 if DST is observed in this ZIP code and 0 if not).

This database was composed using ZIP code gazetteers from the US Census Bureau from 1999 and 2000, augmented with additional ZIP code information The database is believed to contain over 98% of the ZIP Codes in current use in the United States. The remaining ZIP Codes absent from this database are entirely PO Box or Firm ZIP codes added in the last five years, which are no longer published by the Census Bureau, but in any event serve a very small minority of the population (probably on the order of .1% or less). Although every attempt has been made to filter them out, this data set may contain up to .5% false positives, that is, ZIP codes that do not exist or are no longer in use but are included due to erroneous data sources. The latitude and longitude given for each ZIP code is typically (though not always) the geographic centroid of the ZIP code; in any event, the location given can generally be expected to lie somewhere within the ZIP code's "boundaries".The ZIP code database contained in 'zipcode.csv' contains 43204 ZIP codes for the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa. Although every attempt has been made to filter them out, this data set may contain up to .5% false positives, that is, ZIP codes that do not exist or are no longer in use but are included due to erroneous data sources. The latitude and longitude given for each ZIP code is typically (though not always) the geographic centroid of the ZIP code; in any event, the location given can generally be expected to lie somewhere within the ZIP code's "boundaries".

    Description

This hosted feature layer has been published in RI State Plane Feet NAD 83This dataset is a modified version of the source data that are produced and distributed by the U.S. Census Bureau. ZCTA's associated with Rhode Island were selected from the source national-scale dataset and clipped to the Rhode Island coastline for cartographic purposes.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation.

ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas that the Census Bureau creates to present statistical data from Census 2000. The Census Bureau creates ZCTAs for the United States, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands for the 2010 Census. Data users should not use ZCTAs to identify the official USPS ZIP Code for mail delivery. The USPS makes periodic changes to ZIP Codes to support more efficient mail delivery. For the 2010 Census, ZCTAs should more accurately represent the actual ZIP Codes at the time of their delineation than they did for Census 2000. This is because that before the tabulation blocks, which the ZCTAs are built from, were delineated for the 2010 Census, the Census Bureau undertook the process of inserting lines that could be used as 2010 Census tabulation block boundaries, and these lines split polygons where the result would be that a significant number of addresses would occur on either one or both sides of the line associated with a single ZIP Code.

Each 2010 Census tabulation block that contains addresses is assigned to a single ZCTA, usually to the ZCTA that reflects the most frequently occurring ZIP Code for the addresses within that tabulation block. As a result, ZIP Codes associated with address ranges found in the Address Ranges relationship file may not always match the ZCTA. Blocks that do not contain addresses but are completely surrounded by a single ZCTA (enclaves) are assigned to the surrounding ZCTA. A ZCTA may not exist for every USPS ZIP Code. Some ZIP Codes may not have a matching ZCTA because too few addresses were associated with the specific ZIP Code or the ZIP Code was not the most frequently occurring ZIP Code within any of the blocks were it exists. The Census Bureau uses the addresses stored within MTDB to delineate ZCTAs, and at the time of the 2010 Census the MTDB primarily included addresses for residential or at least potentially residential structures, so ZCTAs representing only non-residential structures are infrequent. Also, in each tabulation block, if a choice existed between using a potential city-style mail delivery ZIP Code for an address or a post office box ZIP Code, the city-style mail delivery ZIP Code was preferred for the 2010 Census ZCTA delineation. The Census Bureau identifies 5-digit ZCTAs using a five-character numeric code that represents the most frequently occurring USPS ZIP Code within that ZCTA, and this code may contain leading zeros.

    Description

US Postal Service Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes are used throughout the United States to improve mail delivery. There are 479 unique 5-digit ZIP Codes in Oregon all starting with 97. All ZIP Codes are assigned and managed exclusively by the US Postal Service. There are three main categories of ZIP Codes - 1) Standard, 2) PO Box Only, 3) Unique for large commercial and government customers. Each ZIP Code is assigned a preferred city name by the US Postal Service. NOTE - these city names may not correspond with the city limits or other jurisdiction boundaries of incorporated cities. There are other acceptable city names listed that may be used for mailing addresses for some ZIP Codes. There are also other city names to avoid using for mailing addresses. To verify the preferred, acceptable, or city names to avoid enter the ZIP Code in this tool from the US Postal Service - https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?citybyzipcodeThis is not a product of the US Postal Service. It was compiled by checking all numbers from 97000 - 97999 with the ZIP Code Lookup tool. Most Standard and some PO Box Only ZIP Codes may also be listed as Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZTCA). NOTE - The ZTCA is only an approximation of a ZIP Code area based on the predominate ZIP Code of all housing units in each Census block. ZIP Codes actually follow lines of travel along letter carrier routes and are not polygons as shown by the ZTCA.
