    Description

In the middle of 2023, about 60 percent of the global population was living in Asia. The total world population amounted to 8.1 billion people on the planet. In other words 4.7 billion people were living in Asia as of 2023. Global populationDue to medical advances, better living conditions and the increase of agricultural productivity, the world population increased rapidly over the past century, and is expected to continue to grow. After reaching eight billion in 2023, the global population is estimated to pass 10 billion by 2060. Africa expected to drive population increase Most of the future population increase is expected to happen in Africa. The countries with the highest population growth rate in 2024 were mostly African countries. While around 1.47 billion people live on the continent as of 2024, this is forecast to grow to 3.9 billion by 2100. This is underlined by the fact that most of the countries wit the highest population growth rate are found in Africa. The growing population, in combination with climate change, puts increasing pressure on the world's resources.

For 2019, the number of smartphone users in Saudi Arabia is estimated to reach 28.8 million. This number has steadily increased in the past couple of years.

Smartphone users in Saudi Arabia – additional information

The number of smartphone users in the MEA region is expected to be on the rise in the coming years. In Saudi Arabia, for example, the number is projected to grow to almost 20 million by 2019. Although affordability led to a smartphone boom in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region in the past few years, its smartphone market growth has been slowing down, mirroring the global trend.

Smartphone sales in Middle East and Africa had a worth of more than 42 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, up less than 2 billion U.S. dollars from the previous year. This figure is forecast to increase by about one billion U.S. dollars in 2016. The annual growth rate of smartphone unit shipments in the region is projected to remain in the double digits through 2016 to reach more than 180 million units in 2016.

Smartphone penetration continues to rise across the MEA region in 2016, in parts due to its functionalities. By 2019, half of the population is forecast to be mobile internet users. The growth of the mobile payment industry also influenced the increasing number of smartphone users. The share of mobile users who have made a mobile payment in Middle East & Africa is expected to grow in the future, albeit at a slower rate than other countries. In 2015, Saudi Arabia was home to the second largest mobile online shopping user base out of the Middle East countries. Almost a quarter of the population made an online purchase via phone that year.

    Description

This statistic presents the social network penetration in Saudi Arabia. As of third quarter 2017, the most popular social network was mobile messenger WhatsApp with a ** percent penetration rate. During the same period, ** percent of the total population were active social media users.

As of January 2017, approximately half the world population has access to the internet, while the number of worldwide social media users is expected to exceed * billion in 2016. Although North America is the leading region in terms of internet penetration, the Middle East is also increasingly connected, with an internet penetration above the world average – ** percent of the total population. Notwithstanding this increase in access to internet services, largely supported by increasing access to mobile devices and decreasing costs of internet packages, international observers attract attention to censorship practices in various countries in the region. According to the 2016 Freedom House Index regarding the internet freedom in selected Middle East and North African countries, Syria and Iran jointly occupied the penultimate place in internet freedom with ** index points. With a ** index, Saudi Arabia received a “not free” status from the International organization.

In Saudi Arabia, social media and technology is increasingly popular, mostly due to the low average age of the country’s population.

    Description

The growth rate in the welfare aggregate of the total population is computed as the annualized average growth rate in per capita real consumption or income of the total population in the income distribution in a country from household surveys over a roughly 5-year period. Mean per capita real consumption or income is measured at 2017 Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) using the Poverty and Inequality Platform (http://www.pip.worldbank.org). For some countries means are not reported due to grouped and/or confidential data. The annualized growth rate is computed as (Mean in final year/Mean in initial year)^(1/(Final year - Initial year)) - 1. The reference year is the year in which the underlying household survey data was collected. In cases for which the data collection period bridged two calendar years, the first year in which data were collected is reported. The initial year refers to the nearest survey collected 5 years before the most recent survey available, only surveys collected between 3 and 7 years before the most recent survey are considered. The coverage and quality of the 2017 PPP price data for Iraq and most other North African and Middle Eastern countries were hindered by the exceptional period of instability they faced at the time of the 2017 exercise of the International Comparison Program. See the Poverty and Inequality Platform for detailed explanations.
