    Description

This statistic shows the ten U.S. states with the highest amount of milk production from 2020 to 2024. California, is the leading producer, where over four million pounds of milk were produced in 2024. Milk productionDairy farming is an agricultural business which is engaged in the long-term milk production within the dairy industry. It is a large contributor to the overall economy in many states. California, Wisconsin, New York, Idaho and Pennsylvania had the highest milk supply. The number of U.S. dairy farms has sharply decreased in the last decades, while dairy operations have ever-larger numbers of cows concentrated on a single farm. These extensive dairy farming conditions with a large herd size and a high milk output are seen as a profitable way for the milk industry in order to provide milk at relatively low cost for the consumer. Due to its high milk volume, the main cow used for milk production is the Holstein-Friesian. However, with this intensification of milking cows there comes a corresponding concentration of manure production which causes problems and challenges for the environment such as the risk of elevated nitrogen levels or contaminated ground water.Due to these environmental impacts, many dairy operations in Wisconsin are now facing opposition regarding plans to expand their dairy herds.

    Description

Animal production statistics cover three main sub-domains based on three pieces of relevant legislation and related gentlemen’s agreements.

    • Livestock and meat statistics are collected under Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008. They cover meat production, as activity of slaughterhouses (monthly) and as other slaughtering (annual), meat production (gross indigenous production) forecast (semi-annual or quarterly), livestock statistics, including regional statistics. A quality report is also collected every third year.
    • Milk and milk product statistics are collected under Decision 97/80/EC implementing Directive 96/16/EC. They cover farm production and utilisation of milk (annual), collection (monthly for cows’ milk) and production activity by dairies (annual) and statistics on the structure of dairies (every third year). An annual methodological report is also collected.
    • Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under Regulation (EC) No 617/2008, implementing Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007 (Single CMO Regulation). They cover statistics on the structure (annual) and the activity (monthly) of hatcheries as well as reports on the external trade of chicks.

European Economic Area countries (EEA - Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are requested to provide milk statistics, with the exception of those related to home consumption, as stated in Annex XXI of the EEA Agreement. Liechtenstein is exempted in the Agreement, only Norway is concerned.

The Agreement between the European Community and the Swiss Confederation on cooperation in the field of statistics states that Switzerland must provide Eurostat with national milk statistics and, after 2013, livestock and meat statistics.

The same statistics are requested from the candidate and potential candidate countries as EU acquis.

The statistical tables disseminated by Eurostat are organised, under Animal production (apro_anip), into three groups of tables on Milk and milk products (apro_mk), Livestock and meat (apro_mt) and Poultry farming (apro_ec). This later label covers statistics on hatcheries and trade in chicks and on production of eggs for consumption. The regional animal production statistics collected on livestock (agr_r_animal) and on cows’ milk production on farms (agr_r_milk_pr) are disseminated separately.

Due to the change in the legal basis or in the methodology, the time series may be broken. This is indicated by a flag in the tables.

Further data about the same topics refer to repealed legal acts or agreements. The tables on statistics on the structure of rearing (apro_mt_str) and the number of laying hens (apro_ec_lshen) or of equidae (apro_mt_lsequi) are therefore no longer updated. The same applies to some variables (external trade of animals and meat), periods (surveys in April or August) or items (number of horses) included in other tables.

The detailed content of each table and the reference to its legal definition is provided in the table below.

    Description

The Milk Powder Manufacturing industry has faced challenging conditions in recent years. Domestic milk production has declined, reducing industry output and lifting milk prices. Unfavourable weather conditions, like flooding in 2022-23, and mandatory minimum farmgate milk price disclosure under the Dairy Industry Code of Conduct 2020 have further elevated prices. Supply-side pressures have driven manufacturers to sell almost all products overseas, with exports contributing significantly to revenue. Free trade agreements with countries like Indonesia and China have provided attractive tariffs, boosting foreign demand. Asia’s rising middle class has driven consumers to seek high-quality milk powder from premium dairy-producing countries, favouring Australian products like infant formula and adult milk powder. Although pandemic-induced stockpiling in China temporarily boosted exports, a stronger Australian dollar, along with sluggish economic conditions and low household income in China, has recently diminished export sales. Overall, industry revenue is expected to have fallen at an annualised 7.5% over the five years through 2024-25, to $768.2 million. This includes an anticipated 5.6% plunge in 2024-25 due to falling prices and production across product segments. The industry is in decline, set to grow slower than the economy over the 10 years through 2029-30. Major companies have optimised their milk powder production, slightly mitigating high operating costs. For example, Saputo shut down a production line, and Fonterra plans to sell multiple brands. However, meagre profitability has squeezed out many small-scale manufacturers, causing enterprise and establishment numbers to drop. Average wages have risen due to higher payments to skilled workers over the past few years. Yet manufacturers’ adoption of automated machinery has replaced manual workers, diminishing the industry’s employment and total wage costs. Revenue is projected to fall marginally over the coming years. The milk pool is forecast to shrink, constraining the output available to local and overseas markets. Growing New Zealand counterparts are set to capture unmet demand, shaking Australian manufacturers’ market position. The industry’s reputation will retain loyal customers, but a lack of innovation and value-added products is poised to fuel a marginal revenue decline. Overall, revenue is forecast to decrease at an annualised 0.9% over the five years through 2029-30, to $732.9 million.

    Description

BackgroundBovine tuberculosis (bTB) primarily caused by Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), is a globally prevalent zoonotic infectious disease of cattle and other livestock and wildlife species. Pakistan is the fourth-largest milk-producing country in the world, with approximately 212 million animals. Livestock farming provides a livelihood for almost 8 million families. Moreover, there is currently no effective control program and national data in place. Therefore, we constructed a first meta-analysis on the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in Pakistan. This study aimed to provide an overview of bovine tuberculosis in this country and identify the risk factors associated with its prevalence.MethodsWe searched Science Direct, Pubmed, Base, Green File-Poly U Library, Google Scholar, and additional articles were also identified manually from reference lists of articles generated in database search, systemically for papers that presented bTB prevalence data, published in English language between January 1, 2000, and April 30 2024. A total of 35 published articles were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis.ResultsThe estimated overall prevalence of bTB was found to be 6.06% [95% CI: 4.67–7.87]. Cattle were more susceptible to infection, with a higher prevalence (6.44% [95% CI: 4.04–10.26]) compared to buffalo (5.54% [95% CI: 3.13–9.81]). The prevalence determined by PCR (5.65% [95% CI: 3.33–5.98]) was much similar to that of TST (5.61% [95% CI: 4.20–7.50]) with no significant difference. Milk samples showed the highest prevalence (14.66% [95% CI: 7.38–29.11]), particularly due to the consumption of unpasteurized milk, improper handling of dairy products and suckling by calves from the infected cows. Furthermore, the analysis considered effect of various potential risk factors (age, weight, breed, body condition score, herd size, animal status) along with different geographical factors (longitude, latitude, altitude, humidity, rainfall, temperature, climate) associated with bTB prevalence, which should be considered when developing future disease surveillance and control programs.ConclusionIn Pakistan bTB was widely distributed throughout the country, as a neglected zoonotic disease. Long-term disease prevalence monitoring should be recommended along with the need to improve diagnostic techniques, enhance farm management practices, and implement targeted surveillance to protect both animal and public health.
