Abstract

The FAO has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality).

This second-round survey, which took place from 26 January to 2 March 2022, utilized a random sample of 1 904 households at the Admin 1 level (Region). The survey targeted the regions of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Cagayan Valley (Region II), Calabarzon (Region IV-A), Central Luzon (Region III), Ilocos Region (Region I), Soccsksargen (Region XII) and Western Visayas (Region VI). The survey was complemented by interviews with extension officers, agricultural input dealers and food traders.

In 2021, Iligan city had the highest number of deaths from malnutrition in the Philippines' Northern Mindanao region, accounting for 88 out of 337 total deaths across the region. On the other hand, the city of Valencia reported two death caused by malnutrition in the same year.

In 2014, there were around one thousand crime incidents per 100,000 individuals across the Northern Mindanao Region of the Philippines. The region has about 4.7 million population and a total land area of approximately two million hectares.

According to the survey conducted in the Philippines as of September 2020, around 45 percent of respondents stated that the government inadequately assured them regarding obtaining help for those who had lost their job or livelihood from the COVID-19 pandemic in Mindanao. A large proportion of Filipino households have lost their jobs from to the lockdown imposed by the government.

In 2021, Cagayan de Oro city had the highest number of deaths by heart diseases in the Philippines' Northern Mindanao region, accounting for just over 2,615 out of nearly 10,514 total deaths across the region. On the other hand, the city of El Salvador reported only 80 deaths by heart diseases in the same year.
