    Description

Past shallow coal mine workings are derived from the Coal Authority's records of underground coal mine workings. This dataset has been created by extracting all those underground workings, or parts thereof, whose depth is 30 metres or less from the surface. Shallow workings do not have sufficient overlying strata therefore any movement has the potential to reach the surface and cause damage; approx 50% of the accepted surface hazards are related to shallow workings, both recorded and unrecorded.

    Description

Probable shallow coal mine workings contain locations and estimated extents of probable shallow underground workings for which no recorded plan exists, but where it is likely that workable coal at shallow depths has been mined before records were kept. The data has been estimated from available mining records by qualified mining surveyors. Since 1872 there has been a law that requires all coal mine operators to deposit working plans of the mine with the Government following the cessation of operations. Prior to this date the plans were often destroyed or kept in private ownership. This layer was constructed to show areas where the Coal Authority believe that there is evidence of past coal mine workings but have no formal abandonment plan for those workings, such as an adjacent mine plan may have the annotation 'Ancient workings', located by development and/or site investigation, the workings may even be shown on an estate/surface plan. This dataset does not therefore constitute a complete dataset and omissions of recorded and unrecorded shallow workings do not constitute virgin un-worked ground; standing advice must prevail.

    Description

This dataset has been produced upon collaboration with the Ordnance Survey (OS), in order to produce a geospatial layer to aid in identifying areas which might see the most impact from a mine water heat scheme. It has been designed in order for stakeholders to identify areas which may see the relevant surface level demand and end-user base for mine water heat opportunities. The dataset shows:- the extent of the underground mine workings, at a 5km hex resolution- the distribution of building types across the UK's coalfields- the total annual heating demand (in GWh/yr) per 5km hex- the total annual cooling demand (in GWh/yr) per 5km hexThe dataset does not guarantee the potential of a mine water heat prospect in any of the 5km hex cells. The potential for a mine water heat scheme at any location is subject to a thorough review of the relevant subsurface and environmental data and granting of all permissions, permits and licenses.

    Description

Water in abandoned mine workings is a potential source of geothermal energy. It can used in space and water heating. The thermal energy that can be obtained tends to increase with depth. Alongside other data from the Scotland Heat Map, depth information is used to identify areas where geothermal energy could be used as a low carbon, renewable heat source. Depth is given in meters and is displayed using contour lines. This data comes from a 2013 Scottish Government commissioned study into the potential for deep geothermal energy. The work was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and AECOM. BGS used an existing data source to create a model to estimate depth, no new measurements were taken. More information can be found in the study report on the Scottish Government website: https://www.gov.scot/publications/study-potential-deep-geothermal-energy-scotland-volume-2/

    Description

The exploitation of natural resources by underground mining commenced in Northern Ireland about 300 years ago and has in some areas left a legacy of surface instability above disused workings for coal, salt and other minerals. The existence of abandoned mine workings is a significant consideration in relation to planning and environmental protection.

Abandoned mines, comprising trial pits, shafts, adits, and underground workings, occur across Northern Ireland. The responsibility for these Abandoned Mines rests with the Department for the Economy (DfE). The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland monitor these workings for the DfE.

The Abandoned Mines Database contains over 2000 trial pits, shafts, adits, and collapses. These, along with mine plans showing the extent of the underground workings, have been used to create this layer that identifies areas where the GSNI and DfE should be consulted for Planning Applications.

This layer is made available to the Northern Ireland Planning Portals, local councils and developers to assist in the identification of developments and planning applications in areas in close proximity to recorded historical mine workings.

This layer is accompanied by guidance on development in areas of abandoned mines (https://www2.bgs.ac.uk/gsni/AbandonedMinesGuidance.pdf). This document also contains guidance on the production of a Mine Risk Assessment report and exemptions where a Mine Risk Assessment is not required e.g. minor works to an existing dwelling.

A guidance document for planners on consulting with the GSNI is also available (https://www2.bgs.ac.uk/gsni/ConsultingGSNI.pdf).

Mine plans that are held by the GSNI/DfE showing the extent of workings can be viewed in the Registered Collection of Mine Plans (https://gsni-data.bgs.ac.uk/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/baae8ba1-2d73-4dff-90fc-f52d426d1701) and many are available to view online using the links provided.

    Description

The 1km Hex Mining Hazard (Not Including Coal) v7 dataset shows areas of known underground mining (Not Including Coal), identified with an indication of the level of hazard associated for each site. The presence of former underground workings, particularly where shallow, may collapse and cause surface settlement which is used to identify potential hazard at each site. The rating is based on a Low (limited mining known to have occurred) to High (underground mining is known to have occurred) scale. The dataset covers areas of known underground working in Great Britain. The coverage is not comprehensive as areas with no evidence of underground working are unclassified. Underground extraction of minerals and rocks has taken place in Great Britain for more than 5000 years. This dataset draws together a range of diverse information; the geology, the primary constraint on distribution; additional information sourced from published literature and knowledge from BGS experts. Derived from the original MiningHazardNotIncludingCoalGB_v7 dataset, this layer generalises these data into a Hex grid format, with an effective hexagonal grid resolution of 2.6km coverage area (side length of 1km). The dataset was created to provide a comprehensive overview of Great Britain's long and complicated mining legacy. It provides essential information for planners and developers working in areas where former underground mine workings may have occurred. Also for anyone involved in the ownership or management of property, including developers, householders and local government.
