This layer contains detailed outlines of Maryland counties. The Maryland land county boundaries were built using political county boundaries and the National Hydrology Data (NHD). Land boundaries are a key geographic featue in our mapping process. This is a MD iMAP hosted service. Since 2011, DOT Bikeways Coordinator has enlisted the help of TEBS-GIS (then DTS) to prepare bikeways data for the annual Bike-to-Work Day folding paper map distributed each Spring. A PDF of the latest map can be downloaded here: https://gis.montgomerycountymd.gov/folding_bike_map/MoCoBike.pdfAs DOT could not provide a constructed date for all bikeways, the First_Map field provides the first year each bikeway appeared on this annual map, as a sort of proxy for when each came into existence. (Again, the first map was produced in 2011, so there are no dates earlier than that.)Major bikeways are given a value of 1 in the Level field. Can be downloaded from the GIS Data Portal here.
State of Maryland municipality boundary dataset.Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) maps annexations from municipalities. This dataset is created and maintained by the Maryland Department of Planning. These boundaries are not intended to serve as a legal description. Fields:MUN_NAME (Municipality Name): Name of Municipality located in Maryland.RESOLUTION_NUMBER (Resolution Number): Local Municipality Annexation Resolution Number.ANNEXATION_DATE (Annexation Date) (DD/MM/YYYY): The Annexation Date field shows when there's been a change in the boundary. This date is known as the “Effective Date” from the municipality. The date 1/1/1997 is used as a default date of when annexation changes were first indicated in the GIS layer and not necessarily of when it was actually annexed. If there's a date of 1/1/1997, it can be assumed that the annexation occurred on this date or before. For example, for Baltimore City, the city boundary was determined hundreds of years ago. Other than that default date, the date will show when the property was annexed. ACRES (GIS Acres): GIS calculated acres.JURSCODE (Jurisdiction Code) – Four letter county code: ALLE (Allegany), ANNE (Anne Arundel), BACI (Baltimore City), BACO (Baltimore County), CALV (Calvert), CARO (Caroline), CARR (Carroll), CECI (Cecil), CHAR (Charles), DORC (Dorchester), FRED (Frederick), GARR (Garrett), HARF (Harford), HOWA (Howard), KENT (Kent), MONT (Montgomery), PRIN (Prince George’s) QUEE (Queen Anne’s), SOME (Somerset), STMA (St. Mary’s), TALB (Talbot), WASH (Washington), WICO (Wicomico), WORC (Worcester). This is a MD iMAP hosted service. The Communities layer was created in 2009 to describe areas often referenced by denizens, as many areas of the County are not within an official municipality with city limits. The five Regional Services Center directors at the time worked with DTS-GIS (now TEBS) staff to create geographic areas with which citizens identify, since some of the general place names such as “Bethesda” and “Silver Spring” can cover large swaths of the County and are not specific enough for certain purposes. At first, they looked at existing layers such as Census Designated Places, Zip Codes, and municipalities, but the directors found that these other layers either didn't cover the entire County or else didn't really represent the locations to which citizens commonly refer. DTS-GIS staff prepared paper maps for the directors so they could use existing geographic features as a guide as they marked areas within their own service regions. The polygons in this layer are the result of that effort. Can be downloaded from the GIS Data Portal here.
