During the 1968-72 plan, Morocco succeeded in accelerating the growth of its economy and in improving the situation of its external payments. Aided substantially by good crops following favorable weather in three years out of five, real gross domestic product (GDP) growth averaged 5.4 percent yearly during the five-year period. Reflecting the sustained rise in exports during the plan period and the slower growth of imports in 1971 and 1972, the balance of payments showed a surplus from 1969 on. These results represented a definite improvement over those of the preceding decade, during which the rate of real GDP growth had barely exceeded that of population growth, and the balance of payments had been a source of constant concern. These achievements were accompanied by an increase in per capita consumption averaging yearly about two percent per capita in real terms between 1967 and 1972. The following two sections will review Morocco~^!!^s economic performance since 1972, highlight the considerable achievements and some emerging weaknesses, and assess the country~^!!^s economic and financial prospects in the light of its revised development objectives and strategy. Annex one contains International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) estimates of 1972-76 national accounts at constant 1975 prices, and annex two contains quantitative projections for the 1978-82 period.
