In 2024, Ethiopia had the largest Christian population in Africa, with around 77.5 million people who identified as Christian. The second highest Christian population was in Nigeria, with 74.4 million people. Christianity has a significant presence in Africa, with its history on the continent dating back to the fourth century in Ethiopia. Furthermore, Christianity has spread throughout Africa with different denominations and traditions, taking root in various regions. Between Oct. 14, 2014, and May 21, 2015, Pew Research Center, with generous funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Neubauer Family Foundation, completed 5,601 face-to-face interviews with non-institutionalized adults ages 18 and older living in Israel.
The survey sampling plan was based on six districts defined in the 2008 Israeli census. In addition, Jewish residents of West Bank (Judea and Samaria) were included.
The sample includes interviews with 3,789 respondents defined as Jews, 871 Muslims, 468 Christians and 439 Druze. An additional 34 respondents belong to other religions or are religiously unaffiliated. Five groups were oversampled as part of the survey design: Jews living in the West Bank, Haredim, Christian Arabs, Arabs living in East Jerusalem and Druze.
Interviews were conducted under the direction of Public Opinion and Marketing Research of Israel (PORI). Surveys were administered through face-to-face, paper and pencil interviews conducted at the respondent's place of residence. Sampling was conducted through a multi-stage stratified area probability sampling design based on national population data available through the Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics' 2008 census.
The questionnaire was designed by Pew Research Center staff in consultation with subject matter experts and advisers to the project. The questionnaire was translated into Hebrew, Russian and Arabic, independently verified by professional linguists conversant in regional dialects and pretested prior to fieldwork.
The questionnaire was divided into four sections. All respondents who took the survey in Russian or Hebrew were branched into the Jewish questionnaire (Questionnaire A). Arabic-speaking respondents were branched into the Muslim (Questionnaire B), Christian (Questionnaire C) or Druze questionnaire (D) based on their response to the religious identification question. Note that not all respondents who took the questionnaire in Hebrew or Russian are classified as Jews in this study. Following fieldwork, survey performance was assessed by comparing the results for key demographic variables with population statistics available through the census. Data were weighted to account for different probabilities of selection among respondents. Where appropriate, data also were weighted through an iterative procedure to more closely align the samples with official population figures for gender, age and education. The reported margins of sampling error and the statistical tests of significance used in the analysis take into account the design effects due to weighting and sample design.
In addition to sampling error and other practical difficulties, one should bear in mind that question wording also can have an impact on the findings of opinion polls.

Historically, Portugal has been a country of Catholics. The 2021 census demonstrated that this trend has not been inverted, as over 80 percent of the population in Portugal identified as Catholic. Protestant or Evangelic believers accounted for more than two percent of the population, while Jehovah's Witnesses constituted one percent of residents. Among non-Christian faiths, Muslims were the most representative group, making up 0.42 percent of the population.
Religious but generally not practicing the faith
In the same year, Catholics numbered more than seven million people spread throughout the country, conquering the religious majority in the mainland and in the two autonomous regions. Citizens without religion totaled more than 1.2 million, which made of them the second most numerous religious group in Portugal. Young people presented the same religious trend, with young Catholics being the most representative group, followed by non-religious. Among youngsters, the attendance of religious events was mostly conducted occasionally, while a quarter did not participate in such proceedings at all.
The contribute of immigration to the growth of Evangelical Christianity
Despite being the minority, non-Catholic Christian and non-Christian faiths have been growing in Portugal. In 2011, Evangelical believers totaled 75.6 thousand, more than doubling ten years after. Such growth was partially motivated by the increase in Brazilian immigration, as more than 61 percent of new members of Evangelical churches in 2023 were of Brazilian origin. In fact, Brazil was the place of origin of almost 82 percent of all the immigrant Evangelical Christians residing in Portugal. However, more than a quarter of new Evangelical Christians were Portuguese, which shows that other religions, namely Christian Catholicism, have been losing members to Evangelical Catholicism.
This study, designed and carried out by the "http://www.asarb.org/" Target="_blank">Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB), compiled data on 372 religious bodies by county in the United States. Of these, the ASARB was able to gather data on congregations and adherents for 217 religious bodies and on congregations only for 155. Participating bodies included 354 Christian denominations, associations, or communions (including Latter-day Saints, Messianic Jews, and Unitarian/Universalist groups); counts of Jain, Shinto, Sikh, Tao, Zoroastrian, American Ethical Union, and National Spiritualist Association congregations, and counts of congregations and adherents from Baha'i, three Buddhist groupings, two Hindu groupings, four Jewish groupings, and Muslims. The 372 groups reported a total of 356,642 congregations with 161,224,088 adherents, comprising 48.6 percent of the total U.S. population of 331,449,281. Membership totals were estimated for some religious groups.
In January 2024, the ARDA added 21 religious tradition (RELTRAD) variables to this dataset. These variables start at variable #12 (TOTCNG_2020). This dashboard presents insights into the religious affiliations and Assisted Dying voting patterns of UK Members of Parliament. It combines publicly available data to support transparency and understanding of Parliamentâs composition.
The data is compiled from publicly available parliamentary records and voting data. You can download it directly from the link in the header or view it in the Raw Data tab of the dashboard.
There are three steps to determining religion. An MP is classified as having a religion based on the following criteria:
If the MP is a member of a religiously based group, they are classified as a member of that religion.
If a member has publicly spoken about their religion, they are classified as a member of that religion.
Finally, the text an MP swore in on is used to help infer their religion.
These sources are used in order of priority. For example, Tim Farron is a member of Christians in Parliament and has spoken about his religious views. However, he did not take the oath on the Bible, but made a solemn affirmation on no text. Regardless, he is still classed as Christian.
What do those variable names mean?
Member ID â member_id â A unique numeric identifier for each MP provided by Parliament.
Name â display_as â The full display name of the MP.

When swearing in, there are versions of the Bible specific to Catholics â typically the New Jerusalem Bible or the DouayâRheims Bible â whereas if someone just asks for âthe Bibleâ, they are given the King James Version and could be from any Christian denomination.
It would be a shame to lose that detail, so I provide the option to break out Catholic MPs separately.

According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2023, over ** percent of respondents reported no religious affiliation, while approximately ** percent identified as Christians and ** percent as Buddhists. The present study âshows the development of members of the protestant and the Roman Catholic Church in Germany and analyzes the importance of certain components of the membership development. The survey is based on data of the statistical office since the 1950s and on data of both churches (Protestant Church in Germany, Hannover, and German Bishops Conference, Bonn) on church life. The study aims to compile the membership development of both Christian churches in long time series, to analyze it systematically and to question, extent and quantify the thus far monocausal explanations for membership development. Since the late 1960s world trade and the related social changes, the immigration to Germany since the 1950s and the changes related to the German reunification and the European integration caused that both Christian churches in Germany got less important. Alternative religious communities emerged. Among those for example the Islam with about 4 Billion followers and small Free Church communities play a more and more important role. The official statistic has no or little data about those religious communities; therefor the survey concentrates on two National Christian Churchesâ (Eicken, J. /Schmitz-Veltin, A., 2010, a. a. O., p. 577). Compared to the discussion about leaving the church the public discussion pays little attention to demographic factors of membership development. The present study aims to show that the membership development is not only characterized by persons leaving, but that structure elements have an important impact, too. These âeffects are not least based on the long term development of birth rates and the resulting surpluses of deaths as well as the changes of values concerning baptism. Der Beitrag stĂŒtzt sich auf Zahlen des Statistischen Bundesamtes seit den 1950er-Jahren beziehungsweise auf von den beiden Kirchen (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland, Hannover, sowie Deutsche Bischofskonferenz, Bonn) zur VerfĂŒgung gestellte Daten zum âkirchlichen Lebenâ. Der Beitrag verfolgt das Ziel, die Mitgliederentwicklung in den beiden groĂen christlichen Volkskirchen als lange Zeitreihe synoptisch zusammenzustellen, systematisch aufzubereiten und zu analysieren und damit den bisher sehr stark monokausal ausgerichteten ErklĂ€rungsansatz zur Mitgliederentwicklung zu hinterfragen, zu erweitern und zu quantifizieren. Der seit den spĂ€ten 1960er-Jahren zu beobachtende Wertewandel und die damit einhergehenden gesellschaftlichen UmbrĂŒche, die Zuwanderung nach Deutschland seit den 1950er-Jahren sowie die UmwĂ€lzungen im Zuge der deutschen Vereinigung und der europĂ€ischen Integration haben dazu gefĂŒhrt, dass die beiden christlichen Volkskirchen in Deutschland an Bedeutung verloren haben. Neben die römisch-katholische und die evangelische Kirche sind zunehmend alternative Glaubensgemeinschaften getreten. Unter diesen spielen beispielsweise der Islam mit rund 4 Mill. AnhĂ€ngern sowie kleinere freikirchliche oder charismatische Gemeinden zunehmend eine Rolle. Ăber diese Religionsgemeinschaften liegen in der amtlichen Statistik jedoch keine bzw. nur wenige Angaben vor, sodass sich der Beitrag im Folgenden auf die christlichen Volkskirchen konzentriertâ (Eicken, J./Schmitz-Veltin, A., 2010, a. a. O., S. 577). Im Gegensatz zu der Diskussion um Kirchenaustritt wird den demografischen Faktoren der Mitgliederentwicklung in der aktuellen Diskussion wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Der vorliegende Beitrag möchte vor diesem Hintergrund aufzeigen, dass die Mitgliederentwicklung der groĂen Volkskirchen nicht nur durch Austritte geprĂ€gt ist, sondern altersstrukturelle Effekte ebenfalls als Ursache in ErwĂ€gung zu ziehen sind. (UNCLASSIFIED) There are three main ethnolinguistic groups that made up ethnicity in Liberia; Mel, Mande, and Kru. The ethnic mix of Liberia has contributed to a rich culture as well as ethnic tension. It is common for politics in West Africa to divide along ethnic lines. Ethnic tension along with poor economic and social conditions and political instability were the leading causes for the two recent civil wars in the country. This first began in 1989 when the National Patriotic Front of Liberia, led by Charles Taylor, rose up against the Kran dominant government lead by Samuel Doe. The first civil war ended in 1997 with Charles Taylor formally voted into power. During the civil war Taylor commonly targeted Muslim Mande populations and the Kran for being the two groups most associated with the Doe regime. The opposition to Taylor retaliated by attacking Christian sites. Taylorâs regime was chaotic which led to a second civil war that began in 1999 with full scale war in 2003; a cease fire was signed the same year which ended the civil war. The actions during both civil wars show how politics and ethnicity go hand in hand and can produce ethnoreligious violence. Many in Liberia participate in secret societies known as hale, this is the most controlling and unifying force in Liberian culture with most participants belonging to one or more societies. They are both religious and political in nature and lay out acceptable and unacceptable behavior. There are numerous different hale societies offering regulations on how someone should act in society. The two most important hale societies are the menâs Poro and the femaleâs Sande, with participants joining at puberty to be taught the ideals of manhood and womanhood. Initiations are secret and performed in the forest. Reports state that initiation into the Sande society often includes female genital mutilation while boys undergo circumcisions in the Poro society. Belonging to either the Poro or Sande society is so important among traditional communities that those who do not join are not considered a member of the village, clan, or tribe. Mande - The Mande people group is the largest ethnicity in Liberia and has multiple subgroups. Agriculture, trade, and animal husbandry are common economic activities among the Mande people. They are patrilineal and the oldest male serves as the lineage head. Class structure is also common among Mande people typically consisting of royal, noble, commoner, artisan, and former slave classes. The largest Mande subgroup are the Kpelle and alone they account for 20.3 percent of the total Liberian population. The Kpelle organize themselves into many chiefdoms each of which are led by a paramount chief. While mass conversion to Christianity happened in the nineteenth century many still practice indigenous belief systems either alone or in combination with Christianity. Mel - The Mel group in Liberia is comprised of the Kissi and the Gola, 4.8 percent and 4.4 percent of the population respectively. Most Kissi are either Christian, animists, or a combination of the two. A small population, roughly 9 percent, is Muslim. Most are subsistence farmers or urban laborers. During the first civil war they were in conflict with the Kran. Kru â The Kru are organized based on patrilineal relationships and divided in many subgroups. As with many other ethnic groups in the region, while many have converted to Christianity there is still a significant portion that still adheres to indigenous beliefs or incorporates them into Christianity. Indigenous beliefs are passed through folklores and proverbs. Christianity is the major religion in numerous African countries. As of 2024, around 96 percent of the population of Zambia was Christian, representing the highest percentage on the continent. Seychelles and Rwanda followed with roughly 95 percent and 94 percent of the population being Christian, respectively. While these countries present the highest percentages, Christianity was also prevalent in many other African nations. For instance, in South Africa, Christianity was the religion of nearly 85 percent of the people, while the share corresponded to 71 percent in Ghana. Religious variations across Africa Christianity and Islam are the most practiced religions in Africa. Christian adherents are prevalent below the Sahara, while North Africa is predominantly Muslim. In 2020, Christians accounted for around 60 percent of the Sub-Saharan African population, followed by Muslims with a share of roughly 30 percent. In absolute terms, there were approximately 650 million Christians in the region, a number forecast to increase to over one billion by 2050. In contrast, Islam is most prevalent in North Africa, being the religion of over 90 percent of the population in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya. Christianity in the world As opposed to other religions, Christianity is widely spread across continents worldwide. In fact, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Europe each account for around 25 percent of the global Christian population. By comparison, Asia-Pacific and North America make up 13 percent and 12 percent of Christians worldwide, respectively. In several regions, Christians also suffer persecution on religious grounds. Somalia and Libya presented the most critical situation in Africa in 2021, reporting the strongest suppression of Christians worldwide just after North Korea and Afghanistan.
