To estimate the population for an UA, first the ratio of the subject UA that is contained within a county (or sub-area) to the area of the entire county was determined. That ratio was multiplied by the estimated county population to obtain the population for that sub-area. The population for the entire UA is the sum of all sub-area populations estimated from the counties they are located within. For the 2010 Census, urban areas comprised a “densely settled core of census tracts and/or census blocks that meet minimum population density requirements, along with adjacent territory containing non-residential urban land uses as well as territory with low population density included to link outlying densely settled territory with the densely settled core.” In 2010, the US Census Bureau identified two types of urban areas—UAs and Urban Clusters (UCs). UAs have a population of 50,000 or more people. Note: Pensacola, FL--AL Urbanized Area is located in two states: Florida (Escambia County and Santa Rosa County) and Alabama (Baldwin County). 2021 population of Baldwin County, AL used for this estimation is from the US Census annual population estimates (2020-2021). The 2015 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. Congressional Districts are the 435 areas from which people are elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After the apportionment of congressional seats among the states based on census population counts, each state is responsible for establishing congressional districts for the purpose of electing representatives. Each congressional district is to be as equal in population to all other congressional districts in a state as practicable. The 114th Congress is seated from January 2015 to 2017. The cartographic boundary files for the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) each contain a single record for the non-voting delegate district in these areas. The boundaries of all other congressional districts are provided to the Census Bureau through the Redistricting Data Program (RDP). The records in this file allow users to map the parts of Urban Areas that overlap a particular county. After each decennial census, the Census Bureau delineates urban areas that represent densely developed territory, encompassing residential, commercial, and other nonresidential urban land uses. In general, this territory consists of areas of high population density and urban land use resulting in a representation of the "urban footprint." There are two types of urban areas: urbanized areas (UAs) that contain 50,000 or more people and urban clusters (UCs) that contain at least 2,500 people, but fewer than 50,000 people (except in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam which each contain urban clusters with populations greater than 50,000). Each urban area is identified by a 5-character numeric census code that may contain leading zeroes. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are extracts of selected nation based and state based geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) database. The geodatabases include feature class layers of information for the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island areas (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands). The geodatabases do not contain any sensitive data. The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are designed for use with Esriâ s ArcGIS.
The 2015 State Geodatabase for Florida contains multiple layers. These layers are the Block, Block Group, Census Designated Place, Census Tract,
County Subdivision and Incorporated Place layers.
Block Groups (BGs) are clusters of blocks within the same census tract. Each census tract contains at least one BG, and BGs are uniquely numbered
within census tracts. BGs have a valid code range of 0 through 9. BGs have the same first digit of their 4-digit census block number from the same
decennial census. For example, tabulation blocks numbered 3001, 3002, 3003,.., 3999 within census tract 1210.02 are also within BG 3 within that
census tract. BGs coded 0 are intended to only include water area, no land area, and they are generally in territorial seas, coastal water, and
Great Lakes water areas. Block groups generally contain between 600 and 3,000 people. A BG usually covers a contiguous area but never crosses
county or census tract boundaries. They may, however, cross the boundaries of other geographic entities like county subdivisions, places, urban
areas, voting districts, congressional districts, and American Indian / Alaska Native / Native Hawaiian areas.
The BG boundaries in this release are those that were delineated as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the
2010 Census.
The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of census data and comparison back to
previous decennial censuses. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people.
When first delineated, census tracts were designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living
conditions. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Physical changes in street patterns caused by
highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, census tracts occasionally are split due to
population growth, or combined as a result of substantial population decline. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable
features. They may follow legal boundaries such as minor civil division (MCD) or incorporated place boundaries in some States and situations to
allow for census tract-to-governmental unit relationships where the governmental boundaries tend to remain unchanged between censuses. State and
county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy. In a few rare instances, a census tract may
consist of noncontiguous areas. These noncontiguous areas may occur where the census tracts are coextensive with all or parts of legal entities
that are themselves noncontiguous. For the 2010 Census, the census tract code range of 9400 through 9499 was enforced for census tracts that
include a majority American Indian population according to Census 2000 data and/or their area was primarily covered by federally recognized American
Indian reservations and/or off-reservation trust lands; the code range 9800 through 9899 was enforced for those census tracts that contained little
or no population and represented a relatively large special land use area such as a National Park, military installation, or a business/industrial
park; and the code range 9900 through 9998 was enforced for those census tracts that contained only water area, no land area.

Southeastern Florida is underlain by geologic units of varying permeability from land surface to depths between 150 and 400 ft. These units form an unconfined aquifer system that is the source of most of the potable water used in the area. This body of geologic units is called the surficial aquifer system. In parts of Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, a highly permeable part of that aquifer system has been named the Biscayne aquifer (Parker, 1951; Parker and others, 1955). Adjacent to or underlying the Biscayne aquifer are less-permeable but potentially important water-bearing units that also are part of the surficial aquifer system. Most previous hydrogeologic investigations in southeastern Florida concentrated on the populated coastal area. Drilling and monitoring activities were commonly restricted to zones used for water supply or to overlying zones. Hence, information on the characteristics of the western or deeper parts of the Biscayne aquifer and of sediments below the Biscayne aquifer in the surficial aquifer system was insufficient for present needs. Continuing increases in the demand for water from the surficial aquifer system in the highly populated coastal area of southeastern Florida and attendant concerns for the protection and management of the water supply have resulted in a study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the South Florida Water Management District, to define the extent of the surficial aquifer system and its regional hydrogeologic characteristics. The overall objectives of the regional study are to determine the geologic framework of the surficial aquifer system, the areal and vertical water-quality distribution, factors that affect water quality, the hydraulic characteristics of the components of the surficial aquifer system, and to describe ground-water flow in the aquifer system.

This dataset contains boundaries for each county’s 2010 rural (non-urban) area in the State of Florida with 2020 census population and 2021 population estimates. The population estimates can be used for a variety of planning studies including statewide and regional transportation plan updates, subarea and corridor studies, and funding allocations for various planning agencies.Each year, the Forecasting and Trends Office (FTO) publishes population estimates and future year projections. The 2021 population estimates are based on the population estimates developed by the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida. BEBR uses the decennial census count for April 1, 2020, as the starting point for state-level projections. All legal boundaries and names in this dataset are from the US Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line Files (2021).For the 2010 Census, urban areas comprised a “densely settled core of census tracts and/or census blocks that meet minimum population density requirements, along with adjacent territory containing non-residential urban land uses as well as territory with low population density included to link outlying densely settled territory with the densely settled core.” “Rural” encompasses all population, housing, and territory not included within an urban area. This dataset contains a representation of 2010 developed lands used in the Florida 2070 project. Florida 2070 and its companion project Water 2070 were a joint effort of 1000 Friends of Florida, the University of Florida's GeoPlan Center and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The work was completed in December 2016. Florida 2070 produced three land use/population distribution scenarios Baseline 2010, Trend 2070 and Alternative 2070. The two 2070 scenarios are based on a population projection derived from data produced by the Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research. This projection suggests approximately 15 million more people will live in Florida in 2070 than did in 2010. The Baseline 2010 captures the patterns of land use and associated population distribution that existed in 2010. Trend 2070 captures a potential pattern of land use and associated population distribution for 2070, should all new development occur in greenfields at the same gross urban density as was present in each county in 2010. Alternative 2070 captures a potential pattern of land use and associated population distribution for 2070 that assumes increased levels of redevelopment of existing urban areas, increased gross urban densities in greenfields over those of 2010, and protection for some agricultural and natural lands. Water 2070 uses the three Florida 2070 scenarios to estimate development and agriculture demand for each census block expressed in gallons per day per acre.
