The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 combines a number of indicators, chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. This allows each area to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation.
Local Concentration is the population weighted average of the ranks of a district’s most deprived LSOAs that contain exactly 10% of the local authority district’s population.
Extent is the proportion of a local authority district’s population living in the most deprived LSOAs in the country.
Income Scale is the number of people who are Income deprived.
Employment Scale is the number of people who are Employment deprived.
Average of LSOA Ranks is the population weighted average of the combined ranks for the LSOAs in a local authority district.

The London Borough Profiles help paint a general picture of an area by presenting a range of headline indicator data in both spreadsheet and map form to help show statistics covering demographic, economic, social and environmental datasets for each borough, alongside relevant comparator areas. The London Borough Atlas does the same but provides further detailed breakdowns and time-series data for each borough. The full datasets and more information for each of the indicators are usually available on the London Datastore. A link to each of the datasets is contained in the spreadsheet and map. London Borough Profiles On opening the Microsoft Excel version, a simple drop down box allows you to choose which borough profile you are interested in. Selecting this will display data for that borough, plus either Inner or Outer London, London and a national comparator (usually England where data is available). To see the full set of data for all 33 local authorities in London plus the comparator areas in Excel, click the 'Data' worksheet. A chart and a map are also available to help visualise the data for all boroughs (macros must be enabled for the Excel map to function). The English indices of deprivation measure relative deprivation in small areas in England called lower-layer super output areas. The index of multiple deprivation is the most widely used of these indices.
The statistical release and FAQ document (above) explain how the Indices of Deprivation 2019 (IoD2019) and the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD2019) can be used and expand on the headline points in the infographic. Both documents also help users navigate the various data files and guidance documents available.
The first data file contains the IMD2019 ranks and deciles and is usually sufficient for the purposes of most users.

This dataset contains a range of measures which summarise the Indices of Deprivation 2015 at local authority district level. This dataset contains a range of measures which summarise the Indices of Deprivation 2015 at local authority district level. Local authority districts include lower-tier non-metropolitan districts, London boroughs, unitary authorities and metropolitan districts. At the time of publication, there were 326 local authority districts in England. Summary measures are provided for each of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), the seven domains and the supplementary indices of income deprivation among children and older people. The data for each summary measure are presented in pairs of scores and ranks: • The first variable in each pair (e.g. ‘average rank’) is the score for the measure. The higher the score, the more deprived the area. • The second variable in each pair (e.g. ‘rank of average rank’) is the rank for the measure. On each measure, the local authority district with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and the area ranked 326 is the least deprived. Summary measures at ward level of the Indices of Deprivation (ID) 2007. NOTE: The ward summary for ID2010 can be found on the ID2010 page. The Government's Indices of Deprivation are produced for small areas across England. Summary measures of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are published for local authorities. This dataset gives GLA calculations giving, as far as possible, comparable summary measures for wards in London. It also includes GLA calculations giving the two supplementary indices at ward level. The purpose is to replicate, as far as possible, the local authority level measures published by CLG and gives alternative and additional measures, including a ward level version of the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) and the Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI). The scores and ranks within London are given, with a rank of 1 denoting the most deprived out of a total of 628 wards in London, with the City of London grouped into four areas, only the first ward of which is named. The ward level summary measures replicating those at LA level produced here are: -Average of SOA Scores -Average of SOA Ranks -Extent -The Income Scale -The Employment Scale The LA level Concentration measure cannot be sensibly reproduced at ward level, since it is based on ten per cent of the area’s population, which is in most cases less than a single SOA. Instead, a summary measure Highest ranked SOA in ward has been included. Additionally, this Briefing includes the total number of SOAs in each ward and gives a count of how many SOAs are included among the more deprived areas in England. Four such counts are given – the five per cent most deprived, ten per cent, 20 per cent and 50 per cent, or above average.

This mapping tool enables you to see how COVID-19 deaths in your area may relate to factors in the local population, which research has shown are associated with COVID-19 mortality. It maps COVID-19 deaths rates for small areas of London (known as MSOAs) and enables you to compare these to a number of other factors including the Index of Multiple Deprivation, the age and ethnicity of the local population, extent of pre-existing health conditions in the local population, and occupational data. Research has shown that the mortality risk from COVID-19 is higher for people of older age groups, for men, for people with pre-existing health conditions, and for people from BAME backgrounds. London boroughs had some of the highest mortality rates from COVID-19 based on data to April 17th 2020, based on data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Analysis from the ONS has also shown how mortality is also related to socio-economic issues such as occupations classified ‘at risk’ and area deprivation. There is much about COVID-19-related mortality that is still not fully understood, including the intersection between the different factors e.g. relationship between BAME groups and occupation. On their own, none of these individual factors correlate strongly with deaths for these small areas. This is most likely because the most relevant factors will vary from area to area. In some cases it may relate to the age of the population, in others it may relate to the prevalence of underlying health conditions, area deprivation or the proportion of the population working in ‘at risk occupations’, and in some cases a combination of these or none of them. A lot of data is still only available using the 2001 boundaries therefore two Atlases have been created - one using the current LSOA boundaries (2011) and one using the previous boundaries (2001). If you need to find an LSOA and you know the postcode of the area, the ONS NESS search page has a tool for this. BackgroundIdentifying and tackling the social determinants of infectious diseases has become a public health priority following the recognition that individuals with lower socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by infectious diseases. In many parts of the world, epidemiologically and genotypically defined community-associated (CA) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains have emerged to become frequent causes of hospital infection. The aim of this study was to use spatial models with adjustment for area-level hospital attendance to determine the transmission niche of genotypically defined CA- and health-care-associated (HA)-MRSA strains across a diverse region of South East London and to explore a potential link between MRSA carriage and markers of social and material deprivation.Methods and FindingsThis study involved spatial analysis of cross-sectional data linked with all MRSA isolates identified by three National Health Service (NHS) microbiology laboratories between 1 November 2011 and 29 February 2012. The cohort of hospital-based NHS microbiology diagnostic services serves 867,254 usual residents in the Lambeth, Southwark, and Lewisham boroughs in South East London, United Kingdom (UK). Isolates were classified as HA- or CA-MRSA based on whole genome sequencing. All MRSA cases identified over 4 mo within the three-borough catchment area (n = 471) were mapped to small geographies and linked to area-level aggregated socioeconomic and demographic data. Disease mapping and ecological regression models were used to infer the most likely transmission niches for each MRSA genetic classification and to describe the spatial epidemiology of MRSA in relation to social determinants. Specifically, we aimed to identify demographic and socioeconomic population traits that explain cross-area extra variation in HA- and CA-MRSA relative risks following adjustment for hospital attendance data. We explored the potential for associations with the English Indices of Deprivation 2010 (including the Index of Multiple Deprivation and several deprivation domains and subdomains) and the 2011 England and Wales census demographic and socioeconomic indicators (including numbers of households by deprivation dimension) and indicators of population health. Both CA-and HA-MRSA were associated with household deprivation (CA-MRSA relative risk [RR]: 1.72 [1.03–2.94]; HA-MRSA RR: 1.57 [1.06–2.33]), which was correlated with hospital attendance (Pearson correlation coefficient [PCC] = 0.76). HA-MRSA was also associated with poor health (RR: 1.10 [1.01–1.19]) and residence in communal care homes (RR: 1.24 [1.12–1.37]), whereas CA-MRSA was linked with household overcrowding (RR: 1.58 [1.04–2.41]) and wider barriers, which represent a combined score for household overcrowding, low income, and homelessness (RR: 1.76 [1.16–2.70]). CA-MRSA was also associated with recent immigration to the UK (RR: 1.77 [1.19–2.66]). For the area-level variation in RR for CA-MRSA, 28.67% was attributable to the spatial arrangement of target geographies, compared with only 0.09% for HA-MRSA. An advantage to our study is that it provided a representative sample of usual residents receiving care in the catchment areas. A limitation is that relationships apparent in aggregated data analyses cannot be assumed to operate at the individual level.ConclusionsThere was no evidence of community transmission of HA-MRSA strains, implying that HA-MRSA cases identified in the community originate from the hospital reservoir and are maintained by frequent attendance at health care facilities. In contrast, there was a high risk of CA-MRSA in deprived areas linked with overcrowding, homelessness, low income, and recent immigration to the UK, which was not explainable by health care exposure. Furthermore, areas adjacent to these deprived areas were themselves at greater risk of CA-MRSA, indicating community transmission of CA-MRSA. This ongoing community transmission could lead to CA-MRSA becoming the dominant strain types carried by patients admitted to hospital, particularly if successful hospital-based MRSA infection control programmes are maintained. These results suggest that community infection control programmes targeting transmission of CA-MRSA will be required to control MRSA in both the community and hospital. These epidemiological changes will also have implications for effectiveness of risk-factor-based hospital admission MRSA screening programmes.

The Indices show London remains an area of mixed fortunes, with some wealthier areas alongside pockets of deprivation across the capital. Generally, London is showing less deprivation over time compared with other parts of the country, and the pockets of deprivation are becoming more dispersed. The indices help to pinpoint those areas where there is greatest need on a number of dimensions of deprivation. The ID2019 data for the whole of England are available on this MHCLG web page. Young adults between the ages of 18-24 are the loneliest age-group in the UK and other Western countries yet little is known about the causes and experiences of their loneliness. In particular, young adults of lower socio-economic status (SES) living in the most deprived areas are loneliest in the United Kingdom. Therefore, the aim of the data collected included exploring the causes and experiences of loneliness in young adults with these qualities and circumstances from their own perspective (part 1). The data also includes exploration of how these young adults conceptualise and experience their neighbourhood and how they impact upon their loneliness and social connectedness (part 2). This is qualitative data collected from forty-eight participants between June and August 2019 from 48 participants. A recruitment agency was employed to access the quota sample required. Participants were living in/recruited from four of the most deprived boroughs of London, UK: Newham (n = 16), Hackney (n = 16), Tower Hamlets (n = 16), and Barking & Dagenham (n = 16). There were two parts to the study. Part 1 included the free association task, in which participants were first presented with a piece of paper that contained a grid of four empty boxes and asked to express what they associated with “the experience of loneliness” by way of images and/or words. They were further instructed to elaborate one image/idea per box. After completion of the free association task, participants were asked to elaborate on the content of each box, in turn, in an interview. This started with “can we talk about what you have put in box 1, please?” Prompts such as “can you tell me more about that?” were used to ensure thoughts and feelings about the experience of loneliness were fully explored and emerged naturalistically without injection of content via researcher questioning. The interviews lasted for an average of 60 min. Most interviews took place at the participants’ homes though some at a local café, park or similar places if home was not an option. As for part 2, which was immediately after part 1, participants were asked to write or draw one place in their neighbourhood where they feel most socially connected and one where they feel most lonely. Beneath each of the two places they were further instructed to write what it is about that place that makes them feel the way they do. Participants were then asked to elaborate on the content of the association they had produced in an interview. This began with “can we talk about what you’ve put in box one (for the most socially connected place), please?” Prompts including “can you tell me more about that?” and “how does that make you feel in this space?” were used to ensure respondents’ thoughts and feelings about their chosen places were fully explored and emerged naturalistically without input from the researcher questioning. The same process ensued for the second box asking about the loneliest place. Each interview lasted between 20 and 30 minutes. The corresponding image/output for each participant for both parts 1 and 2 is presented.

Air quality in London has improved in recent years as a result of policies to reduce emissions, primarily from road transport. However, recently updated maps of pollution concentrations for 2013 (LAEI 2013) still show significant areas of exceedances of the annual mean NO2 EU Limit Values. Improvements are planned to address these, as recently announced in the Mayor’s package of air quality measures.
The Updated Analysis of Air Pollution Exposure in London research provides an update to similar analysis undertaken in 2013 (which looked at pollution exposure in 2010), published recently by City Hall. It examines pollution exposure in London in 2013 and considers how exposure varies by indicators of age, relative deprivation and ethnic groups in London. It also looks at total exposure (broken down by borough) and exposure at schools.
Through the research described in this report, City Hall is seeking to understand the inequalities in accessing clean air in London and considering how this will be improved by planned air pollution policies.
The spreadsheet lists the schools located in areas where average concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) are over the legal and safe limit as defined by the EU Limit Values; the Limit Value is 40 μg/m3. The modelled NO2 data used in this report is from the 2013 London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI), and the list of schools used is from Edubase public portal from the Department of Education.
The list is shown by borough and in descending order with the most polluted first. Further analysis of this data and other indications of the links between air pollution and social gradient in London can be found in the Updated Analysis of Air Pollution Exposure in London.

We use this data in funding calculations to support publicly funded education and skills in England; covering 16 to 19 study programmes, adult skills fund (ASF), free courses for jobs (FCFJ), apprenticeships, the European Social Fund and advanced learner loans bursary. This includes devolved ASF and FCFJ qualifications funded by mayoral combined authorities or the Greater London Authority.
To support the devolution of ASF, we have produced postcode files to show which postcodes are within the devolved areas, and consequently which body is responsible for ASF learners resident in a given postcode.
For funded learners aged 16 to 19, we apply the most recent single funding year’s factors to all learners in that funding year, regardless of their start date.
For adult-funded aims and apprenticeship frameworks, we changed our calculations in the 2016 to 2017 year to apply the factor or cash value in our calculations based on the date when the learner started the aim or programme. For example, for learners who started adult-funded aims or apprenticeship frameworks from 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2018, we used the values from the 2017 to 2018 tables in the funding calculations for 2018 to 2019 and then in subsequent years.
The area cost uplift reflects the higher cost of delivering provision in some parts of the country, such as London and the south east.
These are uplifts or amounts for learners living in the most disadvantaged areas of the country.
Historically we have used various versions of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) to determine disadvantage factors and uplifts.
The IMD is assigned based on lower layer super output areas (LSOAs). LSOAs are a set of geographical areas developed, following the 2001 census, with the aim of defining areas of consistent size whose boundaries would not change between censuses.
Therefore, we initially set disadvantage factors at LSOA level, and then apply the factors to postcodes within each LSOA. We publish disadvantage information on this page at LSOA level and also at postcode level.
For the year 2021 to 2022 onwards, the 2019 IMD has been used for provision funded by the Department for Education (DfE) (or Education and Skills Funding Agency for relevant years). This used LSOA code based mapping from the 2011 census.
For the year 2016 to 2017 up to and including the year 2020 to 2021, we used the 2015 IMD. This used the LSOA mapping from the 2011 census.
Up to the funding year 2015 to 2016, we used the 2010 IMD which used the LSOAs from the 2001 census as its underlying mapping.
Some Mayoral combined authorities and the Greater London Authority have wished to set different disadvantage factors to those of DfE for ASF provision they fund.
We will indicate which organisation’s funding applies to each factor using a ‘SOFCode’ field in the files published here.

This database of Brownfield land replaces in more detail and accuracy the EP National Land Use Database (NLUD) for London. The current NLUD assessment covers sites in excess of 0.25ha. This project validates, checks and updates this information for existing NLUD sites plus new sites down to a smaller threshold of 0.1 hectares and above. The Database records over 2,000 Brownfield sites across London, equivalent to more than 2% of the land in Greater London (an increase of over 1,000 sites than recorded on the previous system). The Homes and Communities Agency will use the database as their preferred platform for boroughs to record brownfield sites. The London Database uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping. It includes transport routes, deprivation, social infrastructure, as well as heritage and natural environment assets that can be overlaid over the dataset of brownfield land. The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 combines a number of indicators, chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. This allows each area to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation.
Local Concentration is the population weighted average of the ranks of a district’s most deprived LSOAs that contain exactly 10% of the local authority district’s population.
Extent is the proportion of a local authority district’s population living in the most deprived LSOAs in the country.
Income Scale is the number of people who are Income deprived.
Employment Scale is the number of people who are Employment deprived.
Average of LSOA Ranks is the population weighted average of the combined ranks for the LSOAs in a local authority district.
