In 2022, Wordle was the most popular Google search in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Spain. By contrast, in Germany and Italy, Ukraine was the most popular search on Google. In Brazil, Google users were interested the most in the 2022 elections.

    Wordle!

Launched in October 2021 and purchased by the New York Times in January 2022, Wordle is an online game where players can play only once a day and have to guess a five-letter word in six tries. The game became an instant hit, with a surge of daily users at the beginning of the year. For instance, it was one of the most popular iPhone apps in the United States, being played mostly by millennials. Also in the United Kingdom, the game gained in popularity, with most players using the app every day.

    Google search

As the leading search engine in many countries, Google is the most visited multi-platform web property. Indeed, most of Google's revenues come from Google properties, which include the search platform, the traffic generated by search distribution partners using Google.com as their default search in browsers, and the advertising on its own sites.

I scraped data from Google Trends relating to serach queries of the virus 'Coronavirus' and 'COVID-19'. This is based on several research articles showing that google trends has the potential to help with the prediction and detection of disease outbreaks, such as the 2015 Zika outbreak, Influenza and Dengue fever. Other search queries such as the symptoms of the virus can in turn be used to make predictions as they should be correlated with people feeling unwell and presenting with symptoms as well as physician visits. I have not yet scraped the data for search queries for symptoms keywords, but would highly encourage someone else to do it!

Values are calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 is the location with the most popularity as a fraction of total searches in that location, a value of 50 indicates a location which is half as popular. A value of 0 indicates a location where there was not enough data for this term. Note: A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for "covid19" will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for "covid19".

UPDATED: Keywords 'lockdown', 'symptoms of coronavirus', 'social distancing'

As of October 2025, Google represented ***** percent of the global online search engine referrals on desktop devices. Despite being much ahead of its competitors, this represents a modest increase from the previous months. Meanwhile, its longtime competitor Bing accounted for ***** percent, as tools like Yahoo and Yandex held shares of over **** percent and **** percent respectively. Google and the global search market Ever since the introduction of Google Search in 1997, the company has dominated the search engine market, while the shares of all other tools has been rather lopsided. The majority of Google revenues are generated through advertising. Its parent corporation, Alphabet, was one of the biggest internet companies worldwide as of 2024, with a market capitalization of **** trillion U.S. dollars. The company has also expanded its services to mail, productivity tools, enterprise products, mobile devices, and other ventures. As a result, Google earned one of the highest tech company revenues in 2024 with roughly ****** billion U.S. dollars. Search engine usage in different countries Google is the most frequently used search engine worldwide. But in some countries, its alternatives are leading or competing with it to some extent. As of the last quarter of 2023, more than ** percent of internet users in Russia used Yandex, whereas Google users represented little over ** percent. Meanwhile, Baidu was the most used search engine in China, despite a strong decrease in the percentage of internet users in the country accessing it. In other countries, like Japan and Mexico, people tend to use Yahoo along with Google. By the end of 2024, nearly half of the respondents in Japan said that they had used Yahoo in the past four weeks. In the same year, over ** percent of users in Mexico said they used Yahoo.

As of February 2025, several search terms were googled especially actively by German internet users. Among these, the leading three were ‘handball wm’ (handball championship), ‘australian open 2025’ and ‘handball wm 2025’. The terms reflect events, certain dates and ensuing media coverage taking place at the time, in this case about the handball championship and the Australian Open tennis tournament. Always searching Daily life seems unthinkable without using an online search engine, whether for longer research or quickly checking something, or even just to avoid setting bookmarks, typing in URLs. Google has by far the highest share among online search engines used on desktop and mobile devices at almost 90 percent of searches done on Google, followed by Bing and Ecosia. While DuckDuckGo was further down on the list, its market share has been rising in Germany. Google may still have a substantial head start compared to its competitors, but users are increasingly apprehensive about data privacy and protection in connection with how the online search giant uses and stores personal information, as well as tracks search queries. Searching for Trees Ecosia is an environmentally friendly search engine with a unique business model that sets it apart from other search engines. It uses the revenue from search ads to plant trees worldwide and support reforestation projects. Every time a user performs a search on Ecosia, they indirectly contribute to reforestation, as one tree is planted for every 45 searches. The search engine market share held by Ecosia has been growing in recent years, especially in Germany where the company is based, and in other countries in Europe. Ecosia, similarly to other alternative search engines (e.g. DuckDuckGo), uses Bing to power its results.

    Description

According to Google search data, from July 2024 and June 2025 the most frequently searched queries in India were “video” and “WhatsApp". These popular searches highlight key content consumption patterns in the country. The strong interest in video-related queries aligns with the fact that video-sharing platforms account for the largest share of monthly social network users in this country. Optimization of video streaming Not surprisingly, video content is witnessing exponential growth in recent years. It is evident in the fact that video streaming accounts for a major share of online mobile traffic across the nation. Recent trends suggest an increase in consumption of video over graphic or text content. Hence, a sound implementation of SEO in videos has become a necessity for a successful content creating channel. One of the major optimization strategies is to cater to the demographic of the nation, which incorporates efficient description, headline, and tag implementation. Keyword search trends Searches related to local preferences are gaining momentum, rendering local SEO invaluable to promoting visibility of the content. Phrases like “near me” and “close to me” have witnessed a significant increase in their frequency of appearances in queries. Since the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the latter part of 2020 has seen a significant rise in the usage of queries related to the pandemic. This is testament to the influence of recent events on keywords and optimized phrases for improved channel visibility.

    Description

Recent research suggests that search volumes of the most popular search engine worldwide, Google, provided via Google Trends, could be associated with national suicide rates in the USA, UK, and some Asian countries. However, search volumes have mostly been studied in an ad hoc fashion, without controls for spurious associations. This study evaluated the validity and utility of Google Trends search volumes for behavioral forecasting of suicide rates in the USA, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Suicide-related search terms were systematically collected and respective Google Trends search volumes evaluated for availability. Time spans covered 2004 to 2010 (USA, Switzerland) and 2004 to 2012 (Germany, Austria). Temporal associations of search volumes and suicide rates were investigated with time-series analyses that rigorously controlled for spurious associations. The number and reliability of analyzable search volume data increased with country size. Search volumes showed various temporal associations with suicide rates. However, associations differed both across and within countries and mostly followed no discernable patterns. The total number of significant associations roughly matched the number of expected Type I errors. These results suggest that the validity of Google Trends search volumes for behavioral forecasting of national suicide rates is low. The utility and validity of search volumes for the forecasting of suicide rates depend on two key assumptions (“the population that conducts searches consists mostly of individuals with suicidal ideation”, “suicide-related search behavior is strongly linked with suicidal behavior”). We discuss strands of evidence that these two assumptions are likely not met. Implications for future research with Google Trends in the context of suicide research are also discussed.

    Description

During my tenure at Microsoft, I was often tasked with performing extensive Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) on some historical data. One major challenge we data analysts encountered was the difficulty in understanding the significance of specific events from several months or even years prior. Although we could employ various filtering mechanisms to sift through news articles, it was still a challenge to gauge whether a subject was a trending topic at that time.

To address this, I developed a Python-based web scraping utility. This tool captures the top 20 search results from various countries—specifically the US, UK, Germany (DE), France (FR), Netherlands (NL), Italy (IT), and Australia (AUS)—and stores them in my personal SQL database.

It's worth noting that there are gaps in the collected data, owing to a range of unforeseen circumstances such as power outages, residential moves, and server maintenance among others.

You are welcome to use this dataset for various types of analysis. For example, you could examine how long public sentiment around a particular event, like the outbreak of the Ukrainian War, remains prevalent in a specific country, like the United States.

I plan to update this dataset on a monthly basis and will also release past datasets for further scrutiny.

    Description

Alternative search engine DuckDuckGo's worldwide market share has steadily increased from July 2019 to January 2025 – the largest surge being in the United States, which surpassed the search engine’s growth in all other regions. Here, an increased uptake began roughly around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, continuing in the months leading up to the US elections and beyond, but later running a bit lower than three percent in since January 2023. Ecosia - the more popular alternative in Europe While Google is still the market leader by a long shot when it comes to search engines in the United States - where DuckDuckGo is also based, consumer trust in big tech has been waning and more are seeking out privacy-based alternatives. In Europe, Ecosia is the more popular option and has seen steady growth particularly in Germany and France. Despite not having privacy as its main selling point, the German-based company invests its profits into tree-planting and reforestation projects. Americans’ waning trust in the government The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic caught most governments off-guard, invoking a host of different responses and approaches across the globe. In the United States, overall trust in the government to deal appropriately with the pandemic fell by approximately 20 percent in the period between February 2020 and January 2021. In fact, among the various institutions of authority, Americans had the least trust in the government – even less than that towards the European Union. Conversely, the United Nations commanded the most public trust. As the COVID vaccination rollout continues across the country, young Americans aged 18 to 24 are also the most skeptical when it comes to the idea of vaccination passports for travel, with approximately 41 percent in support of the measure.

    Description

    Context

The Event I wanted to analyze if there is a relationship between the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Personal Data in terms of web search in specific periods. To do so, I used Google Trends Statistics. I made my comparisons by using world wide web searches for the topics of GPDR and Personal Data. I looked for worldwide web searches. Because in Google Trends, one can go to one country at a time. Meaning, one can only look for one country for her/his research in each data collection. I used Law & Government as a category for one independent variable.

    Content

Given both statements for GPDR and Personal Data, one can understand GDPR acknowledges fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons, and also this law acknowledges the freedom of personal data. We can evaluate from this sentence GDPR does not restrict the movement of personal data, it allows movement of personal data by protecting natural persons’ rights. Since topics of data protection, personal data, and the laws related to these two terms are unfamiliar to many people, it would be interesting to analyze the public’s searches on Google Trends. One can find a powerful correlation if her/his researches contain fresh topics. Also, academically shedding light on untouched fields is always expected from the scholars.

    Inspiration

GDPR has been enacted on 27 April 2016. From that date, the movement of personal data has been regulated. Controllers who process personal data need to follow GDPR’s regulations. But as a natural person, one might not know what she/he needs to do. Also, not everyone has the privilege to go to lawyers. So, a simple Google search could be an expected outcome for most people. Given that explanation, I wanted to analyze if there is a relationship between GDPR and Personal Data topics on web searches. I proved that GDPR has affected Personal Data searches on Google Trends. My purpose for this project is to shed a light on data protection laws' affection for our lives. It is a new regulation. As data subjects, we should learn our fundamental rights.

    Description

Google Trends data have been used to investigate various themes on online information seeking. It was unclear if the population from different parts of the world shared the same amount of attention to different mask types during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to reveal which types of masks were frequently searched by the public in different countries, and evaluated if public attention to masks could be related to mandatory policy, stringency of the policy, and transmission rate of COVID-19. By referring to an open dataset hosted at the online database Our World in Data, the 10 countries with the highest total number of COVID-19 cases as of 9th of February 2022 were identified. For each of these countries, the weekly new cases per million population, reproduction rate (of COVID-19), stringency index, and face covering policy score were computed from the raw daily data. Google Trends were queried to extract the relative search volume (RSV) for different types of masks from each of these countries. Results found that Google searches for N95 masks were predominant in India, whereas surgical masks were predominant in Russia, FFP2 masks were predominant in Spain, and cloth masks were predominant in both France and United Kingdom. The United States, Brazil, Germany, and Turkey had two predominant types of mask. The online searching behavior for masks markedly varied across countries. For most of the surveyed countries, the online searching for masks peaked during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic before the government implemented mandatory mask wearing. The search for masks positively correlated with the government response stringency index but not with the COVID-19 reproduction rate or the new cases per million.

    Description

This article advances extant research that has audited search algorithms for misinformation in four respects. Firstly, this is the first misinformation audit not to implement a national but a cross-national research design. Secondly, it retrieves results not in response to the most popular query terms. Instead, it theorizes two semantic dimensions of search terms and illustrates how they impact the number of misinformative results returned. Furthermore, the analysis not only captures the mere presence of misinformative content but in addition whether the source websites are affiliated with a key misinformation actor (Russia’s ruling elites) and whom the conspiracy narratives cast as the malicious plotters. Empirically, the audit compares Covid-19 conspiracy theories in Google search results across 5 key target countries of Russia’s foreign communication (Belarus, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, and the US) and Russia as of November 2020 (N = 5280 search results). It finds that, across all countries, primarily content published by mass media organizations rendered conspiracy theories visible in search results. Conspiratorial content published on websites affiliated with Russia’s ruling elites was retrieved in the Belarusian, German and Russian contexts. Across all countries, the majority of conspiracy narratives suspected plotters from China. Malicious actors from the US were insinuated exclusively by sources affiliated with Russia’s elites. Overall, conspiracy narratives did not primarily deepen divides within but between national communities, since – across all countries – only plotters from beyond the national borders were blamed. To conclude, the article discusses methodological advice and promising paths of research for future cross-national search engine audits.
