In second place was cnn.com with just over *** million visits, followed by foxnews.com with almost a ****** of a million. Online news consumption in the U.S. Americans get their news in a variety of ways, but social media is an increasingly popular option. A survey on social media news consumption revealed that ** percent of Twitter users regularly used the site for news, and Facebook and Reddit were also popular for news among their users. Interestingly though, social media is the least trusted news sources in the United States. News and trust Trust in news sources has become increasingly important to the American news consumer amidst the spread of fake news, and the public are more vocal about whether or not they have faith in a source to report news correctly. Ongoing discussions about the credibility, accuracy and bias of news networks, anchors, TV show hosts, and news media professionals mean that those looking to keep up to date tend to be more cautious than ever before. In general, news audiences are skeptical. In 2020, just **** percent of respondents to a survey investigating the perceived objectivity of the mass media reported having a great deal of trust in the media to report news fully, accurately, and fairly.

    Description

    Context

This dataset includes some of the basic information of the websites we daily use. While scrapping this info, I learned quite a lot in R programming, system speed, memory usage etc. and developed my niche in Web Scrapping. It took about 4-5 hrs for scrapping this data through my system (4GB RAM) and nearly about 4-5 days working out my idea through this project.

    Content

The dataset contains Top 50 ranked sites from each 191 countries along with their traffic (global) rank. Here, country_rank represent the traffic rank of that site within the country, and traffic_rank represent the global traffic rank of that site.

Since most of the columns meaning can be derived from their name itself, its pretty much straight forward to understand this dataset. However, there are some instances of confusion which I would like to explain in here:

    1) most of the numeric values are in character format, hence, contain spaces which you might need to clean on.

    2) There are multiple instances of same website. for.e.g. Yahoo. com is present in 179 rows within this dataset. This is due to their different country rank in each country.

3)The information provided in this dataset is for the top 50 websites in 191 countries as on 25th May 2017 and is subjected to change in future time due to the dynamic structure of ranking.

    4) The dataset inactual contains 9540 rows instead of 9550(50*191 rows). This was due to the unavailability of information for 10 websites.

PS: in case if there are anymore queries, comment on this, I'll add an answer to that in above list.

    Acknowledgements

I wouldn't have done this without the help of others. I've scrapped this information from publicly available (open to all) websites namely: 1) http://data.danetsoft.com/ 2) http://www.alexa.com/topsites , of which i'm highly grateful. I truly appreciate and thanks the owner of these sites for providing us with the information that I included today in this dataset.

    Inspiration

I feel that there this a lot of scope for exploring & visualization this dataset to find out the trends in the attributes of these websites across countries. Also, one could try predicting the traffic(global) rank being a dependent factor on the other attributes of the website. In any case, this dataset will help you find out the popular sites in your area.

Facebook: mobile vs desktop usage At the beginning of 2022, around ** percent of Facebook users across the globe were using the platform’s social networking services exclusively via mobile phone, while only *** percent reported using their desktop or laptop devices. In September 2022, three Facebook Inc. products occupied some of the leading positions as most downloaded social networking apps on the Apple App Store in the United States. WhatsApp’s messaging platform ranked second with more than *** million downloads, while Facebook and the instant-messaging service Messenger followed ranking third and fifth with *** million and **** million downloads respectively. Social media evolution Between 2012 and 2024, the daily time spent on social networks worldwide experienced an almost constant increase, with users reaching an average of *** minutes per day in 2023, with a decrease to *** daily minutes of engagement in 2024. However, users’ favorite platforms have changed since 2019, and the power balance appears to be shifting further from Facebook’s market dominance. Description

This dataset contains a list of 3654 Dutch websites that we considered the most popular websites in 2015. This list served as whitelist for the Newstracker Research project in which we monitored the online web behaviour of a group of respondents. The research project 'The Newstracker' was a subproject of the NWO-funded project 'The New News Consumer: A User-Based Innovation Project to Meet Paradigmatic Change in News Use and Media Habits'.For the Newstracker project we aimed to understand the web behaviour of a group of respondents. We created custom-built software to monitor their web browsing behaviour on their laptops and desktops (please find the code in open access at https://github.com/NITechLabs/NewsTracker). For reasons of scale and privacy we created a whitelist with websites that were the most popular websites in 2015. We manually compiled this list by using data of DDMM, Alexa and own research. The dataset consists of 5 columns:- the URL- the type of website: We created a list of types of websites and each website has been manually labeled with 1 category- Nieuws-regio: When the category was 'News', we subdivided these websites in the regional focus: International, National or Local- Nieuws-onderwerp: Furthermore, each website under the category News was further subdivided in type of news website. For this we created an own list of news categories and manually coded each website- Bron: For each website we noted which source we used to find this website. The full description of the research design of the Newstracker including the set-up of this whitelist is included in the following article: Kleppe, M., Otte, M. (in print), 'Analysing & understanding news consumption patterns by tracking online user behaviour with a multimodal research design', Digital Scholarship in the Humanities, doi 10.1093/llc/fqx030.

Social media was by far the most popular news platform among 18 to 34-year-olds in the United States, with 47 percent of respondents to a survey held in August 2022 saying that they used social networks for news on a daily basis. By comparison, adults over 65 years old mostly used network news to keep up to date.

The decline of newspapers In the past, the reasons to regularly go out and purchase a print newspaper were many. Used not only for news but also apartment hunting, entertainment, and job searches (among other things), newspapers once served multiple purposes. This is no longer the case, with first television and then the internet taking care of consumer needs once covered by printed papers. Indeed, the paid circulation of daily weekday newspapers in the United States has fallen dramatically since the 1980s with no sign of future improvement.

    News consumption habits

A survey on news consumption by gender found that 50 percent of women use either online-only news sites or social media for news each day, and 51 percent of male respondents said the same. Social media was by far the most used daily news platform among U.S. Millennials, and the same was true of Gen Z. One appeal of online news is that it often comes at no cost to the consumer. Paying for news found via digital outlets is not yet commonplace in the United States, with only 21 percent of U.S. consumers responding to a study held in early 2021 reporting having paid for online news content in the last year.
