    Description

This statistic shows a ranking of the estimated per capita consumer spending on restaurants & hotels in 2020 in Europe, differentiated by country. Consumer spending here refers to the domestic demand of private households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) in the selected region. Spending by corporations or the state is not included. Consumer spending is the biggest component of the gross domestic product as computed on an expenditure basis in the context of national accounts. The other components in this approach are consumption expenditure of the state, gross domestic investment as well as the net exports of goods and services. Consumer spending is broken down according to the United Nations' Classification of Individual Consumption By Purpose (COICOP). The shown data adheres broadly to group 11. As not all countries and regions report data in a harmonized way, all data shown here has been processed by Statista to allow the greatest level of comparability possible. The underlying input data are usually household budget surveys conducted by government agencies that track spending of selected households over a given period. The data is shown in nominal terms which means that monetary data is valued at prices of the respective year and has not been adjusted for inflation. For future years the price level has been projected as well. The data has been converted from local currencies to US$ using the average exchange rate of the respective year. For forecast years, the exchange rate has been projected as well. The timelines therefore incorporate currency effects. The shown forecast is adjusted for the expected impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy. The impact has been estimated by considering both direct (e.g. because of restrictions on personal movement) and indirect (e.g. because of weakened purchasing power) effects. The impact assessment is subject to periodic review as more data becomes available. The shown data are an excerpt of Statista's Key Market Indicators (KMI). The KMI are a collection of primary and secondary indicators on the macro-economic, demographic and technological environment in more than 150 countries and regions worldwide. All input data are sourced from international institutions, national statistical offices, and trade associations. All data has been are processed to generate comparable datasets (see supplementary notes under details for more information).

    Description

The Fine Dining Restaurants industry weathered the turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic to return to strong growth. The industry is characterized by high-end dining establishments. As a result, growth in per capita disposable income, consumer confidence and spending and the prevalence of households earning more than $100,000 in annual income has benefited the industry, enabling consumers to opt for premium dining experiences. Nevertheless, restaurants were forced to curtail dine-in operations when the COVID-19 struck, reducing demand for fine-dining restaurants as services at these establishments involve a high degree of in-person experience. Overall, industry revenue is forecast to increase at a CAGR of 2.7% to $16.7 billion over the five years to 2024. The industry rapid recovery since the peak of COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns has stemmed from the strong increase in households that generate annual income above $100,000, as these consumers can typically afford the premium prices charged by fine dining restaurants. The number of households within this income bracket has expanded since 2021, giving fine dining restaurants a broader base for a key consumer market segment. In 2024, the industry will continue growing, with revenue projected to rise 2.4%. The restaurant industry will be defined by intense competition moving forward, especially as purchase costs are pressured by rising prices created in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants will seek to adjust, altering menus in light of pricing pressures and adjusting to changing consumer trends. Ultimately, fine dining restaurants will benefit from the continued expansion of consumer incomes, especially of households earning more than $100,000 in annual income. As a result, industry revenue is forecast to increase at a CAGR of 2.8% to $19.2 billion over the five years to 2029. This will allow profit margins across the industry to rise.

    Description

Canadian fast food restaurants have seen significant growth over the past five years, largely attributed to increased consumer spending and innovative product offerings. However, this growth faced constraints due to high internal competition and shifting consumer tastes. Profitable products like coffee and smoothies have become prominent while customizable meals and high-quality ingredients have gained popularity, prompting industry giants to reconsider their strategies and menu offerings. Consequently, industry revenue is projected to increase an annualized 3.8%, reaching approximately $37.0 billion in 2025, with an anticipated 2.4% growth within that year alone. In 2025, profit is expected to make up 4.8% of revenue.

Consumer eating habits have drastically changed over these past five years. Health-consciousness has surged, pushing for alterations to customary fast food options. Major chains responded by expanding menus to cater for healthier items such as salads, fruits, and smoothies. Increased per capita disposable income levels have also bolstered the industry, enabling more consumers to dine at fast food restaurants. This trend also spiked demand for food delivery services, driving restaurants to invest more in robust online ordering and delivery management systems. The industry is expected to endure challenges resulting from the US-Canada tariff wars as a significant share of restaurant purchases are sourced from the US. As purchases become more expensive, especially fresh produce, Canadian fast food restaurants have pivoted to source from local suppliers. Further, the increasing trend toward national pride will favor Canadian-founded fast food chains such as A&W and Tim Hortons. Looking into 2030, industry revenue is forecasted to exhibit an annualized growth rate of 1.1%, reaching $39.1 billion. Growth is anticipated to be swifter in the first half of this outlook given the adaption to new challenges relating to tariffs. In line with rising demand for healthier food, fast-food joints will likely persist in launching new products that resonate with consumers' evolving preferences. Further, food delivery services are expected to continue playing a significantly larger role in this industry.
