    Description

In 2024, ** percent of adults in the United States invested in the stock market. This figure has remained steady over the last few years, and is still below the levels before the Great Recession, when it peaked in 2007 at ** percent. What is the stock market? The stock market can be defined as a group of stock exchanges, where investors can buy shares in a publicly traded company. In more recent years, it is estimated an increasing number of Americans are using neobrokers, making stock trading more accessible to investors. Other investments A significant number of people think stocks and bonds are the safest investments, while others point to real estate, gold, bonds, or a savings account. Since witnessing the significant one-day losses in the stock market during the Financial Crisis, many investors were turning towards these alternatives in hopes for more stability, particularly for investments with longer maturities. This could explain the decrease in this statistic since 2007. Nevertheless, some speculators enjoy chasing the short-run fluctuations, and others see value in choosing particular stocks.

    Description

Broad Based Index Fund Market Outlook

The global broad-based index fund market size was valued at USD 5.3 trillion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 11.2 trillion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.5% during the forecast period. This substantial growth is driven by increasing investor interest in passive investment strategies, along with the rising emphasis on cost-effective and diversified portfolio management.

The surge in demand for broad-based index funds can be attributed to several key growth factors. Firstly, the growing awareness and education about the benefits of passive investing over active management have played a significant role. Investors are increasingly leaning towards index funds due to their lower expense ratios, tax efficiency, and the ability to provide broad market exposure with minimal effort. Secondly, technological advancements and the rise of fintech have made these funds more accessible to a wider audience through online platforms and robo-advisors, democratizing investment opportunities for retail investors globally. Lastly, regulatory changes in many regions are encouraging greater transparency and lower fees in the financial services industry, which further bolsters the attractiveness of index funds as a preferred investment vehicle.

The popularity of broad-based index funds is also bolstered by their performance resilience during market volatility. Historical data indicates that while actively managed funds often struggle to outperform the market consistently, index funds tend to provide more stable returns over the long term. This trend has been particularly noticeable during economic downturns and periods of market uncertainty, where investors seek the relative safety and predictability offered by broad-based diversified portfolios. Additionally, the increased focus on retirement planning and the shift from defined benefit to defined contribution retirement plans have spurred the growth of index funds as they are often the preferred choice in retirement accounts due to their long-term growth potential and lower costs.

The regional outlook for the broad-based index fund market highlights significant growth potential across various geographies. North America, particularly the United States, remains the largest market for index funds, driven by the deep-rooted culture of investing and a well-established financial infrastructure. Europe follows closely, with growth fueled by regulatory support and increasing investor awareness. The Asia Pacific region is expected to witness the highest growth rate, propelled by the burgeoning middle class, rising disposable incomes, and increasing penetration of financial services. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are also anticipated to demonstrate steady growth as financial markets in these regions continue to develop and mature.

Mutual Funds Sales have seen a notable uptick as investors increasingly seek diversified investment options that align with their financial goals. This trend is particularly evident in the context of broad-based index funds, where mutual funds offer a structured approach to investing in a wide array of assets. The appeal of mutual funds lies in their ability to pool resources from multiple investors, enabling access to a diversified portfolio that might otherwise be unattainable for individual investors. This collective investment model not only reduces risk but also provides investors with professional management and oversight. As the financial landscape evolves, mutual funds continue to play a crucial role in facilitating access to index funds, thereby driving sales and expanding their market presence.

    Fund Type Analysis

Equity index funds represent a significant portion of the broad-based index fund market. These funds track a variety of stock indices, such as the S&P 500, NASDAQ, and MSCI World Index, providing investors with exposure to a wide array of equity markets. The appeal of equity index funds lies in their ability to offer broad market diversification at a low cost. Investors benefit from the lower fees associated with passive management and the reduced risk of individual stock selection. As a result, equity index funds have become a staple in both retail and institutional portfolios, driving robust demand and growth in this segment.

Bond index funds, though smaller in market share compared to their equity counterparts, are gaining traction as investors seek stable income and risk diversifi

    Description

As of November 14, 2021, all S&P 500 sector indices had recovered to levels above those of January 2020, prior to full economic effects of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic taking hold. However, different sectors recovered at different rates to sit at widely different levels above their pre-pandemic levels. This suggests that the effect of the coronavirus on financial markets in the United States is directly affected by how the virus has impacted various parts of the underlying economy. Which industry performed the best during the coronavirus pandemic? Companies operating in the information technology (IT) sector have been the clear winners from the pandemic, with the IT S&P 500 sector index sitting at almost ** percent above early 2020 levels as of November 2021. This is perhaps not surprising given this industry includes some of the companies who benefitted the most from the pandemic such as ************** and *******. The reason for these companies’ success is clear – as shops were shuttered and social gatherings heavily restricted due to the pandemic, online services such shopping and video streaming were in high demand. The success of the IT sector is also reflected in the performance of global share markets during the coronavirus pandemic, with tech-heavy NASDAQ being the best performing major market worldwide. Which industry performed the worst during the pandemic? Conversely, energy companies fared the worst during the pandemic, with the S&P 500 sector index value sitting below its early 2020 value as late as July 2021. Since then it has somewhat recovered, and was around ** percent above January 2020 levels as of October 2021. This reflects the fact that many oil companies were among the share prices suffering the largest declines over 2020. A primary driver for this was falling demand for fuel in line with the reduction in tourism and commuting caused by lockdowns all over the world. However, as increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates throughout 2021 led to lockdowns being lifted and global tourism reopening, demand has again risen - reflected by the recent increase in the S&P 500 energy index.

    Description

    Stock Fund Sales Market Outlook

The global stock fund sales market is projected to witness substantial growth, expanding from an estimated USD 20 trillion in 2023 to approximately USD 35 trillion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%. This robust market size increase is driven by several key factors, including rising disposable incomes, growing awareness of investment opportunities, and the increasing popularity of diversified investment portfolios. The growth in the stock fund sales market is underpinned by the increasing number of retail and institutional investors seeking to capitalize on the benefits of stock funds as a vehicle for wealth accumulation and risk management.

A significant growth factor in the stock fund sales market is the proliferation of financial literacy programs and investment education. As governments and financial institutions worldwide invest in educating the masses about the importance of saving and investing, more individuals are becoming aware of stock funds as a viable and lucrative investment option. This educational push has led to an upsurge in the number of retail investors entering the market, thereby driving demand for various types of stock funds. Additionally, the ease of access to information through the internet and social media platforms has further facilitated this growth, enabling potential investors to make more informed decisions.

Another driving factor is the technological advancements in financial services, especially in the realm of online trading and investment platforms. The advent of robo-advisors and automated trading systems has made it easier for individuals to invest in stock funds with little to no manual intervention. These platforms provide personalized investment advice and portfolio management services, which have democratized access to sophisticated investment strategies previously available only to high-net-worth individuals. The convenience, lower fees, and increased transparency offered by these technologies have significantly contributed to the growth of the stock fund sales market.

Moreover, the increasing globalization of financial markets has played a crucial role in the expansion of the stock fund sales market. With the removal of barriers to capital flows across borders, investors now have greater access to international stock funds. This trend has been particularly pronounced in emerging markets, where economic growth rates are higher, and investment opportunities are abundant. As a result, there has been a notable increase in the demand for global and regional stock funds, further propelling market growth. Additionally, regulatory reforms in various countries aimed at protecting investors and ensuring market stability have boosted investor confidence, thereby encouraging more investment in stock funds.

From a regional perspective, North America continues to dominate the stock fund sales market, accounting for a significant share of the global market. The region's well-developed financial infrastructure, high levels of disposable income, and a strong culture of investment are key factors driving this dominance. Additionally, the presence of major financial institutions and asset management companies in North America supports the growth of the stock fund market. However, the Asia Pacific region is expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period, driven by rapid economic development, increasing financial literacy, and a burgeoning middle class with rising disposable incomes. The growing penetration of digital financial services in countries such as China and India is also a significant contributor to the region's growth.

    Fund Type Analysis

The stock fund sales market can be segmented by fund type, including equity funds, bond funds, money market funds, hybrid funds, and others. Equity funds are among the most popular types of stock funds, attracting a significant portion of investor capital. These funds invest primarily in stocks and aim to generate high returns by capitalizing on the growth potential of companies. The appeal of equity funds lies in their potential for higher returns compared to other types of investments, albeit with a higher level of risk. Factors such as market volatility, economic conditions, and company performance play crucial roles in determining the success of equity funds. The increasing awareness of the long-term benefits of equity investments is driving the demand for these funds.

Bond funds, which invest in various types of bonds, are another important segment within the stock fund sales market. These funds are generally considered safer t

    Description

The investors’ attention has been extensively used to predict the stock market. Different from existing proxies of the investors’ attention, such as the Google trends, Baidu index (BI), we argue the collective attention from the stock trading platforms could reflect the investors’ attention more closely. By calculated the increments of the attention volume for each stock (IAVS) from the stock trading platforms, we investigate the effect of investors’ attention measured by the IAVS on the movement of the stock market. The experimental results for Chinese Securities Index 100 (CSI100) show that the BI is significantly correlated with the returns of CSI100 at 1% significance level only in 2014. However, it should be emphasized that the correlation of the new proposed measure, namely IAVS, is significantly at 1% significance level in 2014 and 2015. It shows that the effect of the measure IAVS on the movement of the stock market is more stable and significant than BI. This study yields important invest implications and better understanding of collective investors’ attention.

The Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 are two indices that track company performance in the United States, and both lost value as lockdowns were introduced in the country. European markets also recorded significant slumps, which triggered panic selling among investors. The FTSE 100 – the leading share index of companies in the UK – plunged by as much as ** percent in the opening weeks of March 2020. Is it time to invest in tech stocks? The S&P 500 is regarded as the best representation of the U.S. economy because it includes more companies from the leading industries. However, helped in no small part by its focus on tech companies, the Nasdaq 100 has risen in popularity and seen remarkable growth in recent years. Global demand for digital technologies has increased further due to the coronavirus, with remote working and online shopping becoming part of the new normal. As a result, more investors are likely to switch to the tech stocks listed on the Nasdaq 100.

    Description

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering is found in each network. Secondly, we construct three average threshold networks and find the small-world property in the network before and during the crisis. Finally, the dynamical change of the network community structure is deeply analyzed with different threshold. The result indicates that for large thresholds, the network before and after the crisis has a significant community structure. Though this analysis, it would be helpful to investors for making decisions regarding their portfolios or to regulators for monitoring the key nodes to ensure the overall stability of the global stock market.

    Description

Many of the big winners included in the S&P 500 index from 2020 are companies firmly rooted in the technology sector. The obvious big winner is Tesla, whose share price increased by 7.5 times for a variety of reasons. While the increase in Tesla stocks (arguably) does not have a direct connection to the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a look at many of the other companies in this list indicates a clear link. Online retailers such as Amazon and Etsy saw large increases in their stock price, along with companies who provide crucial parts of infrastructure necessary for online shopping such as PayPal and FedEx. Given the closure of brick and mortar stores in many parts of the world due to the pandemic, the causation here is evident. Similarly, computer chip manufactures NVIDIA and AMD saw returns of 100 percent or more, likely due both to the shift to remote working necessitated by the pandemic, as well as the global increase in playing video games resulting from the unavailability of many other activities.
