    Description

Berlin attracted the most tourist arrivals in Germany in 2023, which is perhaps to be expected. But the country has other city destinations with a lot to offer as well. Among them Hamburg in the north with the largest port in Germany and Munich, the capital of Bavaria, in the south. All three cities also have busy airports and railways. The top three Berlin recorded a significant drop in travel accommodation numbers in 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic began. Figures began to pick up again later, with 724 establishments open in 2024, though this was still less than in previous years. The numbers may also have to do with competition from such accommodation platforms as Airbnb. Hamburg is also catching up after the pandemic in terms of tourism, with noticeably more travel arrivals recorded recently. While 2021 saw around 3.3 million arrivals, there were already roughly 6.4 in 2023. Meanwhile, the average occupancy rate in Munich travel accommodation was also noticeably higher in 2022 than in previous years, with an almost 48 percent total. City tourism As of 2023, around 33.7 million people in Germany preferred city trips as a vacation. Numbers decreased somewhat in recent years. Various factors contribute to making a city attractive for tourists, among them mobility options, the ease of getting around, and spending time outside. In 2022, Germany’s largest cities were evaluated in terms of walking and cycling space availability. Munich scored highest at 51 percent, followed by Cologne with 46 percent and Hamburg with 42 percent. That same year, these cities were also evaluated in terms of traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This time, Hamburg came first at 74 percent, and Berlin followed with 72 percent.

    Description

In 2021, 10 million people went on city trips in Germany. Numbers have shown a steady increase over recent years, except for during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2021, its second year.

    City trips

With numerous cities to choose from in its 16 federal states, each city with its own distinct character, it’s no wonder that city trips in Germany are on the rise. Both rail and flight connections between various destinations are well-developed and continue to expand, plus it’s also often possible to drive, which gives travelers even more room to flexibly plan a city break, sometimes even on short notice. Based on the number of tourist arrivals, the three most popular city trip destinations are Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. More than a third of the population prefers city trips as a vacation.

    Contributing factors

Many factors contribute to the positive development in city trip numbers in Germany. Among them, just to mention a few, is the stable urbanization rate, as well as an active travel accommodation industry. Online travel bookings have made it perhaps easier than ever before to organize a trip.

Overall, travel accommodation establishments in Florence reported around 9.8 million overnight stays by inbound visitors and roughly 2.9 million overnight stays by domestic tourists in 2023. Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance Florence is one of the best-known cities in Italy and a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Located in the region of Tuscany, it is the eighth-largest city in Italy in terms of population size. Since the Middle Ages, the city has been an important center of art, culture, trade, and politics, but its true heyday started in the 14th century, with the beginning of the Renaissance. It was in Florence that this innovative philosophical and art movement was born, and the city was home to some of the greatest poets and artists of the period, like Francesco Petrarca, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. Impact of COVID-19 on Italian tourism Tourism is one of the most significant economic sectors in Italy, contributing to over 200 billion euros in 2019. Due to the impact of the health crisis, however, the total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP in Italy in 2022 was still three percent lower than pre-pandemic levels. Similarly, while the number of international tourist arrivals in Italy rebounded in 2022, it did not catch up yet with the figures from 2019. Overall, the highest volume of tourist arrivals came from Germany, France, and Austria in 2022.

    Description

English description below. Výzkumnou zprávu, datovou matici, tabulky a dotazník naleznete zde.The research was carried out thanks to the project Marketing of the tourist area Brno and its surroundings 2023 No. 117D722003M11 (with the contribution of the state Czech Republic from the Ministry of Regional Development). The research "Perception of Brno abroad", conducted in October 2023, focused on how foreign tourists perceive Brno and what their experience of the city is. The main topics were reasons for visits, information sources about Brno and spontaneous associations with the city. The findings showed that Brno is the second most famous and most visited city in the Czech Republic after Prague among tourists from neighbouring countries. Tourists come to Brno primarily for culture, sightseeing and relaxation, although the city is not associated with a clear association, which may be an advantage for attracting more diverse groups of visitors. The research methodology consisted of a quantitative survey of tourists from neighbouring countries (Poland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia) who have visited the Czech Republic at least once in the last three years, either for one or more days, or who plan to visit the Czech Republic in the next 12 months. Data were collected using the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) method, which means that respondents independently filled in an electronic questionnaire on their computer or tablet. The sample size was 1,280 respondents. Quotas were set for different groups of tourists (overnight, one-day, planning to visit) in the ratio 40:35:25 with a tolerance of ±5% for each country separately (Poland n=300, Germany n=300, Austria n=250, Slovakia n=350). The research report, data matrix, tables and questionnaire can be found here.

    Description

German travel accommodation is picking up where it left off before the COVID-19 lockdowns. Around 487.2 million overnight stays were recorded in 2023, which was very close to the figure recorded in 2019. This renews hope for the future development of overnight tourism as far as travel accommodation in Germany is concerned. Where to stay The first choice of accommodation for visitors coming to Germany is still hotels. In 2023, both domestic and foreign guests favored a hotel stay far ahead of other establishments, with close to 149 million Germans alone staying there. Germany does offer a wide variety of travel accommodation besides hotels. These include B&Bs, campgrounds, youth hostels, various recreation and vacation homes, as well as apartments available for short-term rent. The latter are proving to be a source of competition for serviced accommodation such as hotels due to the larger degree of independence an apartment may offer by definition. Additionally, these apartments or houses rented for a vacation provide more flexibility with kitchen facilities and therefore more financial options when budgeting for a trip. Online home rental platforms such as Airbnb are a leading source. Where to go The majority of international tourists coming to Germany preferred large cities for their overnight stays, as of 2022. These had a population of over 100,000. Particularly for those visiting the country for the first time, especially if they don’t speak the language, cities may prove a more attractive choice to get to know parts of Germany due to the increasingly international atmosphere in urban areas, being able to get around speaking English and convenient transport networks for expanding the trip to other German regions. The largest German cities were also favorably ranked in terms of traffic safety when walking and cycling. So, whether just one overnight stay or several, a lot of factors go into planning a trip besides choosing where to sleep.

    Description

Italy - the history, the landscapes, the food, and wine, all tourist magnets. No wonder, Italy is one of the German's most favorite vacation destinations. In 2024, around 6.66 million Germans have spent their vacation enjoying the beautiful cities and Mediterranean coast of this country. When in Rome Italy remained in the top five among destination countries German travelers flew to in 2024, alongside other popular tourism markets such as Spain and Turkey. With Italy, like other European countries, also being in the throes of economic difficulties after the onset of the global energy crisis and in additionally struggling with its own national inflation levels, the tourism infrastructure suffers as well. German tourists grappling with the same issues at home may find themselves able to afford less even if they do go on a trip, therefore ending up with a more restricted version of an Italian getaway than they might have been used to before. As of 2023, on average, a German tourist in Italy spent around 1,326 euros during their vacation. Coming back Despite ongoing challenges, Germans still made up the largest share of international tourist arrivals in Italy as of 2023, followed by France and Austria. That same year, Germany also accounted for the highest international tourist spending at over eight billion euros total. The U.S. followed with almost 6.5 billion euros spent and the U.K. with roughly 4.5 billion euros.

The most popular vacation destinations for Germans in 2024 were the Baltic Sea, followed by Italy and Austria. Figures reflect travel interest in various regions and countries, despite ongoing inflation. Vacation time Taking time for a vacation is considered important in Germany and surveys confirm that over a third of the population was very interested in doing so, as well as traveling in general. Online bookings have greatly increased the independence of German tourists, even if budgets had to be adjusted due rising prices. In terms of travel accommodation, those vacationing in Germany mainly stayed in a hotel, which included inns, motels or lodges. Vacation apartments or houses were also among the more common options. Staycation situation More than half of the German population wanted to go on a beach vacation or definitely spend their holidays in the sun somewhere. This is also possible in Germany itself along the Baltic or North Sea coasts, though the weather might need to be monitored more closely. The data in this statistic is from the Allensbach Market and Advertising Media Analysis (Allensbacher Markt- und Werbeträgeranalyse or AWA in German), which determines attitudes, consumer habits and media usage of the population in Germany on a broad statistical basis.
