TwitterIn 2024, around **** thousand road traffic accidents caused by motorcycles were reported in Japan, down from about **** thousand accidents in 2015. Partly prompted by stricter penalties for traffic law offenses, accidents have shown a continuous downward trend in Japan for years. Are Japan’s roads safe? Japanese roads are comparably safe due to several factors ensuring responsible driving, such as meticulous traffic regulations, a license point system, seatbelt usage, and modern vehicles in use. Concurrent to the low number of motorcycle accidents, injuries stemming from accidents involving motorcycles also decreased over the past decade. A contributing factor might be the preference for smaller engines, making accidents less likely due to lower speeds and a lighter machine weight, allowing easier handling. Who is to blame for "road rage"? Japan revised its road rage law in summer 2020, the amended Road Traffic Act now imposing stricter penalties for aggressive driving and road rage. Obstructive driving and malicious behavior are punishable even without casualties with up to three years of penal servitude and *** thousand Japanese yen. Despite the penalties and a record low of domestic road traffic accidents, road rage incidents continue to make headlines in Japan and preoccupy the authorities. The National Police Agency (NPA) regularly denounces not only the notorious biker gangs called bōsōzoku, but also kyūshakai. These "classic bike gangs" often center around former bōsōzoku, but tuned classic motorcycles and likewise senior bikers characterize them. They are basically accused of the same misconducts, namely irresponsible driving and noise nuisance in large convoys, disturbing the peace.

TwitterThe number of publicly owned, private, and commercial motorcycles registered in the U.S. states and the District of Columbia reached a total of some 9.6 million units in 2022. In that same year, there were 802,500 motorcycles registered in California. U.S. motorcycle registrations by state In 2022, California and New York reported the highest amount of registered private and commercial motorcycles in the country. Not only is California the U.S. states with the highest number of motorcycles, but it is also the most populous state in the U.S. overall, representing close to 12 percent of the country’s total population. At the bottom of the ranking are Rhode Island, Delaware, and the District of Colombia with fewer than 25,000 registrations, as well as less populous states, including Wyoming and Alaska, and Hawaii. Dangerous travel Riding a motorcycle is one of the most dangerous ways to travel in the U.S. with more than 200 fatalities per billion passenger miles as of 2019. Motorcycle crashes in the United States had decreased slightly in recent years, after peaking in 2016, but saw a strong rise in 2020.

TwitterRiding a motorcycle is associated with a high risk of getting into an accident. In Metro Manila in the Philippines, about 58 people were involved in a motorcycle-related road crash on average daily as of 2023, a significant increase from the year before. Despite this, the number of people with a motorcycle license has shown year-on-year growth. Japanese brands reign in the local motorcycle market The motorcycle market in the Philippines is dominated by four Japanese brands, namely Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Suzuki, belonging to the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA). Despite the presence of other motorcycle brands, only the sales and production values of this four-member association are used to represent the entire motorcycle market. The consolidated sales volume of motorcycles and scooters recovered after a significant slump in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the growth rate remains modest in comparison to the pre-pandemic period. Which region has the highest number of motorcycles? According to official license registration data, Region IV-A had the highest number of registered motorcycles in the Philippines, followed by NCR-East and NCR-West. Meanwhile, when it comes to tricycles (or motorcycles with a sidecar), the highest number of license registrations were recorded in Region III. Both motorcycles and tricycles can be used for public transportation, but motorcycles are more commonly used for private transportation.

Motorcycling provides freedom and excitement, yet riders face a greater risk of crashes and injuries compared to other motorists. Understanding the factors contributing to motorcycle crash risk, especially rider age, experience, and training, is essential for developing effective safety measures. Using a unique and comprehensive matched case-control database of the Motorcycle Crash Causation Study, this study analyzes how the risk of crashing is influenced by riders’ age, experience, and training levels while controlling for other factors, such as alcohol use by the rider. The data consist of 350 cases (crash-involved riders) and 700 controls (similarly at-risk non-crash-involved riders). Based on a conditional logit analysis accounting for the matched case-control structure of the data, “risk curves” are created to understand the relationships between rider age and crash risk. Results suggest that younger riders have a heightened risk, which is reduced with increasing age. Each additional year of a rider’s age is associated with a 15.66% reduction in the odds of a crash, although a nonlinear specification is also examined. Each year of rider experience is associated with a 2.53% reduction in the odds of a crash, and recent participation in a training program is also associated with lower risk. TwitterReport forms concerning the deaths of 120 motorcycle riders in traffic crashes in New South Wales have been studied. Most of those killed were young men. Deaths were particularly common after 6:00pm and at the weekend. In many cases a colliding vehicle had not been aware of the motorcyclist’s presence. Any measure which would make motorcycles more easily visible, such as the constant burning of headlights, should have a beneficial effect. Head injury was very common. If 100 per cent of motorcyclist in New South Wales wore helmets, rather than the 75 per cent as at present, the death rate would be cut by about 35 percent.
