A single-tier municipality doesn't form part of an upper-tier municipality and assumes all municipal responsibilities set out under the Municipal Act and other Provincial legislation. A lower-tier municipality forms part of an upper-tier municipality. Municipal responsibilities set out under the Municipal Act and other Provincial legislation are split between the upper-tier and lower-tier municipalities.

This dataset details the Municipal boundaries for the Region of Niagara. Modifications have been made to the Boundary file (Q4 2017) to reflect legal descriptions as contained in the Municipal Act as well as changes to the shoreline in the City of Port Colborne. The dataset extent corresponds to the Niagara Region. Attributes were updated April 2018 to include 2016 Statistics Canada census and 2014 number of electors. The spatial data was updated Q1 2012 and the table has been revised to include results from the 2010 election and 2011 Statistics Canada Census.

Geographic Information System (GIS) data with the following mapping layers from the Greenbelt Plan:

• outer boundaries
• protected countryside and urban river valley designations
• specialty crop areas (Niagara tender fruit, grape area and Holland Marsh)
• settlement areas (towns, villages and hamlets)
• river valley connections.

The data also contains associated policy designation mapping.

The Geographic Names Ontario (Geonames) data set contains names and locations of geographic features and unincorporated places that have been officially named in Ontario, for identification and labelling purposes. It includes additional geographical referencing information:

The municipal boundary of the City of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, represented as a polygon. The majority of all open datasets published by the City of Waterloo will be constrained to this geographic extent as it represents the boundary of the municipality and the limits of the service area.

A Township is a land subdivision in Ontario. This information was captured through the Ontario Base Mapping Program, is maintained by the Ministry of Natural Resources and distributed through Geospatial Ontario (GEO) Warehouse. The spatial accuracy for some of the townships was improved through the Ontario Parcel, Township Realignment and Township Improvement projects. Improvements may include: * road allowance widths * spatial changes to better represent where the township boundaries are located * more consistent concession names Materials used to improve the location of township lines may include: * township Improvement plots * survey information i.e. retracements * original township plans * surveys notes * the physical features e.g. fence lines in the corporate editing environment * water bodies * GPS Ontario Road Network geometry This product requires the use of geographic information system (GIS) software.

Pre-amalgamation townships in Grey CountyThe boundaries represent the townships prior to Amalgamation details. (2001), referred to as geographic townships. The boundaries are sometimes still used for local communities; although, they will not reflect changes made to the amalgamated townships boundaries.

Contains the boundary of the Town of Caledon and the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga, the three of which collectively constitute the Region of Peel. The Region of Peel has regional municipal jurisdiction within, and only within, the larger boundary; individual municipalities have jurisdiction within, and only within, their respective boundaries.There is a division of powers and responsibilities between these 3 municipalities, referred to by the Province as "lower tier municipalities", and the Region of Peel (referred to by the Province as an "upper tier municipality").A recent update to the data includes new land added along Lake Ontario near the boundary with Toronto.

Technical information Using cached imagery and topographic data, the application provides a fast, seamless display at pre-defined scales. The caches are updated annually.

Contained within the Atlas of Canada's Various Map Series, 1965 to 2006, is is the first of a planned series of regional satellite image maps of all of Canada. It was one of the first satellite image maps to combine imagery and other map components such as boundaries, roads, railways and place names. The imagery is a composite of many images from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellites. The imagery was captured between August 11 to 20, 1990 to obtain cloud-free coverage. This was the only map in this planned series that was produced.

This layer contains both Consolidated Municipal Service Managers (CMSM) & District Social Services Administration Boards (DSABS) based on the 2013 municipal boundary. This layer was built on the full 2013 municipal boundaries: Districts, Single tiers, and Sault Ste Marie Planning Board.The Consolidated Municipal Service Managers (CMSM) and District Social Services Administration Boards (DSSAB) are members of the Ontario Municipal Social Service Association (OMSSA). CMSM is an organization responsible for funding, planning, managing, and delivering human services including learning and child care, employment and income supports, and housing and homelessness prevention programs within specified region in Ontario. There are 47 CMSMs in Ontario that were created as a result of the consolidation of municipal service management that began in 1998. These are primarily made up of upper tier municipalities in southern Ontario and District Social Service Administration Boards (DSSABs) in northern Ontario. Note Indian Reserves were not included in the creation of the boundary. There are 47 CMSM/DSSAB’s in Ontario, but the original dataset contains 76 map features. This is due to some boundaries consisting of both mainland areas and islands areas. In the modified version there are 47 CMSM/DSSAB boundaries and 47 map features. If an area has both a Land and Island extent, they are displayed as one area with the extent being land. The CMSM of Grey has a different Municipal Service Offices (MSO) for the Land and Island extents. In this dataset, the Land MSO is used.

Built-Up Areas are man-made land cover features, ranging from small hamlets at rural cross roads to large cities.

The Ontario Imagery Web Map Service (OIWMS) is an open data service available to everyone free of charge. It provides instant online access to the most recent, highest quality, province wide imagery. GEOspatial Ontario (GEO) makes this data available as an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant web map service or as an ArcGIS map service. Imagery was compiled from many different acquisitions which are detailed in the Ontario Imagery Web Map Service Metadata Guide linked below. Instructions on how to use the service can also be found in the Imagery User Guide linked below. Note: This map displays the Ontario Imagery Web Map Service Source, a companion ArcGIS web map service to the Ontario Imagery Web Map Service. It provides an overlay that can be used to identify acquisition relevant information such as sensor source and acquisition date. OIWMS contains several hierarchical layers of imagery, with coarser less detailed imagery that draws at broad scales, such as a province wide zooms, and finer more detailed imagery that draws when zoomed in, such as city-wide zooms. The attributes associated with this data describes at what scales (based on a computer screen) the specific imagery datasets are visible. Contains lot, concession, and road allowance boundaries for Peel Region. Lots and concessions are a distinctive method of addressing, divided by concession roads (running North-South) and Lines/Sideroads (running East-West). This system is now typically only used in more rural settings, but was the original land division system as surveyed in the 1800s. Lot removal from the fabric is dictated by the Ontario Surveyor General.The geographic townships and lot information is still used for land administration (title) purposes. They are used as part of the legal description of the parcel. This dataset cannot replace a Plan of Survey.The townships, concessions and lots compromise the original township fabric of the Province. The spatial accuracy of the lot fabric for some townships has been improved through the Ontario Parcel, Township Realignment and Township Improvement projects.
