    Description

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is an industry classification sytems developed by the statistical agencies of Canada, Mexico and the United States. NAICS is based on production-oriented principles, to ensure that industrial data, classified to NAICS, are suitable for the analysis of production-related issues such as industrial performance. NAICS Canada 2012 updates NAICS Canada 2007. The new version was implemented in 2013 to coincide with the integration of Statistics Canada's business surveys into a generalized operational model.

    How to use the dataset

This dataset provides detailed US industry data by state, including the number of establishments, value of sales, payroll, and number of employees. All the data is based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for each specific industry. This will allow you to easily analyze and compare industries across different states or regions.

    Research Ideas

    • Analyzing the economic impact of a new business or industry trends in different states: Comparing the change in the number of establishments, payroll, and employees over time can give insight into how a state is affected by a new industry trend or introduction of a new service or product.
    • Estimating customer sales potential for businesses: This dataset can be used to estimate the potential customer base for businesses in different geographic areas. By analyzing total business done by non-employers in an area along with its estimated population can help estimate how much overall sales potential exists for a given region.
    • Tracking competitor performance: By looking at shipments, receipts, and value of business done across industries in different regions or even cities, companies can track their competitors’ performance and compare it to their own to better assess their strategies going forward

    Description

These data represent annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emission totals by industry sectors and households for the total U.S. and by state, for years 2012 to 2020. Industry sectors are defined by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2012 codes, with additional codes added for households and government. Emissions of 16 different GHGs, which are the same GHGs as reported in the U.S. GHG Inventory, are included. Values are given in total kilograms emitted for the given year, sector and location. Data are provided in two alternative formats, as Excel files and as Apache parquet files. The Excel files include: 1) GHGs by 114 aggregate level sectors by state and year, 2) GHGs by 114 aggregate level sectors by year for the U.S., and 3) GHGs by 540 detailed sectors by year for the U.S. The Excel files use a simplified version (not all fields included) of the Flow-by-Sector format (see link to format specification below). The parquet files align with the Excel files except are also separated by year, and provide the complete flow by sector format, where files with "state_m1" correspond to the aggregate level state datasets, files with "national_m1" correspond to the aggregate level national dataset, and files with "national_m2" correspond to the aggregate level state datasets, Standard metadata files in JSON format, and log and validation files in text format (with .log extension) are provided for each parquet file. The data are a product of updated sector attribution models that improve upon the National Greenhouse Gas Industry Attribution Model. The models used to generate the national aggregate and the state datasets are sector attribution models coded in the FLOWSA v2.0.0 tool (https://github.com/USEPA/flowsa/tree/v2.0.0). The national detailed datasets are developed with FLOWSA v2.0.1 (https://github.com/USEPA/flowsa/tree/v2.0.1).

    Description

Industry-year panel dataset derived from the VRscores 2024 release. Each record corresponds to a NAICS code and calendar year from 2012–2024 with at least five matched workers across any year. Variables include the NAICS code and description, worker counts, raw and imputed L2 voter registration counts by party, average match quality, raw and imputed partisan shares, two-party and overall margins, partisan diversity indices, effective number of parties, and a processing timestamp. The dataset contains 13,135 industry-year rows spanning roughly 1,010 NAICS codes per year. It is built from a matching of employment records from Revelio Labs (April 2025) with voter registration data from the L2 voter file (November 2024) using ensemble linkage techniques. Small industries (<5 matched workers) are excluded, one-to-one matches are enforced, and the VRscores methodology and working paper document the data processing and definitions. These files are provided in CSV format; they mirror the industry parquet release but are stored as comma-separated values for convenience.

    Description

Data based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2017. This includes the combination of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 56, 61, 62, 71, 81, 91 and, as of 2019, investments for which an industry cannot be determined. From 1999 to 2011: For Canadian direct investment abroad, this combines the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 3333, 3341 to 3345, 3359, 4173, 4179, 5112, 5132, 5133, 5141, 5142, 5324, 5415 and 8112. For foreign direct investment in Canada, this combines the NAICS codes 33331, 33411, 33421, 33422, 33431, 33441, 33451, 33592, 41731, 41732, 41791, 51121, 51322, 5133, 51419, 51421, 53242, 54151 and 81121. From 2012 onward: For both Canadian direct investment abroad and foreign direct investment in Canada, this combines the NAICS codes 3341 to 3344, 4173, 5112, 5171, 5172, 5174, 5179, 5182, 5415 and 8112. There are some constraints in the groupings as firms have been coded using four digits of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) only. Users are cautioned that, prior to 2019, in general data for smaller industries (defined as industries at the NAICS-3 level) is subject to higher sampling variability. Goods-producing industries combines North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 11 to 33. Services-producing industries combines North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 41 to 91. Starting in 2019, the region Other America" is divided into two regions; "South and Central America" and "Caribbean". Antigua and Barbuda Unallocated countries" include all stakes that could not be allocated to a particular country." Starting in 2019, data for the United States no longer include Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. These are now included in “Other Caribbean.”

The 2012 Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) covers business establishments with paid employees that are located in the United States and are classified using the 2007 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) in mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, and selected retail trade and services industries, namely, electronic shopping and mail-order houses, fuel dealers, and publishers. Establishments classified in transportation, construction, and all other retail and services industries are excluded from the survey. Farms, fisheries, foreign establishments, and most government-owned establishments are also excluded. The survey also covers auxiliary establishments (i.e., warehouses and managing offices) of multi-establishments companies. For the 2012 CFS, an advance survey (pre-canvass) of approximately 100,000 establishments was conducted to identify establishments with shipping activity and to try and obtain an accurate measure of their shipping activity. VITAL SIGNS INDICATOR Jobs by Industry (EC1)

FULL MEASURE NAME Employment by place of work by industry sector

    LAST UPDATED July 2019

DESCRIPTION Jobs by industry refers to both the change in employment levels by industry and the proportional mix of jobs by economic sector. This measure reflects the changing industry trends that affect our region’s workers.

DATA SOURCE Bureau of Labor Statistics: Current Employment Statistics 1990-2017 http://data.bls.gov

    CONTACT INFORMATION vitalsigns.info@bayareametro.gov

METHODOLOGY NOTES (across all datasets for this indicator) The California Employment Development Department (EDD) provides estimates of employment by place of work and by industry. Industries are classified by their North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code. Vital Signs aggregates employment into 11 industry sectors: Farm, Mining, Logging and Construction, Manufacturing, Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Professional and Business Services, Educational and Health Services, Leisure and Hospitality, Government, and Other. EDD counts all public-sector jobs under Government, including public transportation, public schools, and public hospitals. The Other category includes service jobs such as auto repair and hair salons and organizations such as churches and social advocacy groups. Employment in the technology sector are classified under three categories: Professional and Business Services, Information, and Manufacturing. The latter category includes electronic and computer manufacturing. For further details of typical firms found in each sector, refer to the 2012 NAICS Manual (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2012).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides industry estimates for non-Bay Area metro areas. Their main industry employment estimates, the Current Employment Survey and Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, do not provide annual estimates of farm employment. To be consistent, the metro comparison evaluates nonfarm employment for all metro areas, including the Bay Area. Industry shares are thus slightly different for the Bay Area between the historical trend and metro comparison sections.

The location quotient (LQ) is used to evaluate level of concentration or clustering of an industry within the Bay Area and within each county of the region. A location quotient greater than 1 means there is a strong concentration for of jobs in an industry sector. For the Bay Area, the LQ is calculated as the share of the region’s employment in a particular sector divided by the share of the nation’s employment in that same sector. Because BLS does not provide national farm estimates, note that there is no LQ for regional farm employment. For each county, the LQ is calculated as the share of the county’s employment in a particular sector divided by the share of the region’s employment in that same sector.
