    Description

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is an industry classification system developed by the statistical agencies of Canada, Mexico and the United States. Created against the background of the North American Free Trade Agreement, it is designed to provide common definitions of the industrial structure of the three countries and a common statistical framework to facilitate the analysis of the three economies. NAICS is based on supply-side or production-oriented principles, to ensure that industrial data, classified to NAICS, are suitable for the analysis of production-related issues such as industrial performance. NAICS Canada 2017 Version 2.0 consists of 20 sectors, 102 subsectors, 322 industry groups, 708 industries and 923 Canadian industries, and replaces NAICS 2017 Version 1.0.

This layer contains data on the number of establishments, total employment, and total annual payroll for for 20 selected 4- and 5-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. This is shown by county and state boundaries. The full CBP data set (available at census.gov) is updated annually to contain the most currently released CBP data. This layer is symbolized to show the total number of establishments depicted by size, and the average annual pay per employee, depicted by color.

About this Program Data Technical Documentation News & Updates

This ready-to-use layer can be used within ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, its configurable apps, dashboards, Story Maps, custom apps, and mobile apps. Data can also be exported for offline workflows. Please cite the Census Bureau and CBP when using this data.

Data Processing Notes: Boundaries come from the US Census Bureau TIGER geodatabases. Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census Bureau. These are Census Bureau boundaries with water and/or coastlines clipped for cartographic purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2010 AWATER (Area Water) boundaries offered by TIGER. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters). The States layer contains 56 records - all US states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Island Areas Blank values represent industries where there either were no businesses in that industry and that geography OR industries where the data had to be withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies. Users should visit data.census.gov or Census Business Builder for more details on these withheld records.

    Description

The datasets comprise greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors (Factors) for 1,016 U.S. commodities as defined by the 2017 version of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The Factors are based on GHG data for 2022. Factors are given for all NAICS-defined commodities at the 6-digit level except for electricity, government, and households. Each record consists of three factor types as in the previous releases: Supply Chain Emissions without Margins (SEF), Margins of Supply Chain Emissions (MEF), and Supply Chain Emissions with Margins (SEF+MEF). One set of Factors provides kg carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) per 2022 U.S. dollar (USD) for all GHGs combined using 100-yr global warming potentials from IPCC 5th report (AR5) to calculate the equivalents. In this dataset there is one SEF, MEF and SEF+MEF per commodity. The other dataset of Factors provides kg of each unique GHG emitted per 2022 dollar per commodity without the CO2e calculation. The dollar in the denominator of all factors uses purchaser prices. See the supporting file 'Aboutv1.3SupplyChainGHGEmissionFactors.docx' for complete documentation of this dataset.

    Description

Information received in response to the 2017 Inventory Update (chemicals and polymers) To increase transparency and to facilitate access to information on manufactured and/or imported substances in Canada, the Government of Canada is providing a summary of the information received in response to the Notice with respect to substances included as part of the 2017 Inventory Update, (the Notice) which was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I in January 2017 under section 71 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The Notice was applicable to the 2014 and 2015 calendar years with the requirement to report for the most recent calendar year. The information will be used to update the commercial status of these substances, to inform priority setting, and to support risk assessment and risk management activities. In line with communicating information received in response to information gathering initiatives, the Government of Canada published the Approach to disclose confidential information and promote transparency in chemicals management. The files in the resources section below offer an overview of the information gathered under this initiative including: • type of submission; • reported substances; • substances that are manufactured or imported; • industrial sectors involved; • substance functions and commercial uses reported; and • intended use (in commercial activity, in consumer activity, and by children). It should be noted that these documents do not include an assessment of the potential risks these substances may pose to the environment or to the health of Canadians. To complement the information summary document, a compilation of the non-confidential information received is available for download in Excel and CSV format and includes a list of the substances for which no information was submitted. Important information about this summary: In order to protect confidential business information, quantity ranges and exclusion of qualitative data elements have been applied in some cases. Qualitative data includes information that characterizes and categorizes information [e.g., company names, North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes, specified uses, Substance Function Codes, and Consumer and Commercial Codes]. The dataset does not include confidential business information; consequently, the figures presented may be an underestimate. Code 999 "Other" was provided for a Substance Function Code or a Consumer and Commercial Code, it indicates that the codes listed in the Notice did not apply and a description of the function or use was required. Please refer to the Notice or guidance document for the full list of codes and their corresponding descriptions.
