'ZIP Code Business Patterns provides economic data by industry for small geographic areas and is useful for studying the economic activity of small and local areas. Most of the nation's economic activity is covered in this series. Business data is summarized for nine employment-size classes by hundreds of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes and about 40,000 ZIP codes nationwide. A second data set includes summary data by ZIP code (no NAICS breakdown) for number of empl oyees, first-quarter payroll, annual payroll, total number of establishments and nine employment-size classes. Those classes cover business establishments with: 1 to 4 employees; 5 to 9; 10 to 19; 20 to 49; 50 to 99; 100 to 249; 250 to 499; 500 to 999; and 1,000 or more. Data on mid-March employment, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll are summarized by ZIP Code without industry detail. This series excludes governmental establishments except for wholesale liquor establishments (NAICS 4228), retail liquor stores (NAICS 44531), Federally-chartered savings institutions (NAICS 522120), Federally-chartered credit unions (NAICS 522130), and hospitals (NAICS 622).'
