    Description

The 1950 Census population schedules were created by the Bureau of the Census in an attempt to enumerate every person living in the United States on April 1, 1950, although some persons were missed. The 1950 census population schedules were digitized by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and released publicly on April 1, 2022. The 1950 Census enumeration district maps contain maps of counties, cities, and other minor civil divisions that show enumeration districts, census tracts, and related boundaries and numbers used for each census. The coverage is nation wide and includes territorial areas. The 1950 Census enumeration district descriptions contain written descriptions of census districts, subdivisions, and enumeration districts.

    Description

    Abstract

IPUMS-International is an effort to inventory, preserve, harmonize, and disseminate census microdata from around the world. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. The data are coded and documented consistently across countries and over time to facillitate comparative research. IPUMS-International makes these data available to qualified researchers free of charge through a web dissemination system.

The IPUMS project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Population Center, National Statistical Offices, and international data archives. Major funding is provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Additional support is provided by the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research, the Minnesota Population Center, and Sun Microsystems.

    Description

The 1940 Census Tract files were originally created by keypunching the data from the printed publications prepared by the Bureau of the Census. The work was done under the direction of Dr. Donald Bogue, whose wife, Elizabeth Mullen Bogue, completed much of the data work. Subsequently, the punchcards were converted to data files and transferred to the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA). ICPSR received copies of these files from NARA and converted the binary block length records to ASCII format.

    Description

Abstract (en): Summary File 2 contains 100-percent United States decennial Census data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and group quarters occupancy. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status, and tenure (owner-occupied or renter- occupied). The 100-percent data are presented in 36 population tables ("PCT") and 11 housing tables ("HCT") down to the census tract level. Each table is iterated for 250 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), and 39 Hispanic or Latino groups. The presentation of tables for any of the 250 population groups is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people -- that is, if there were fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Created variable labels and/or value labels.. All persons in housing units in United States in 2000. 2013-05-24 Multiple Census data file segments were repackaged for distribution into a single zip archive per dataset. No changes were made to the data or documentation.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 256 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 255 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 254 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 253 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 252 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads. The data are provided in four segments (files) per iteration. These segments are PCT1-PCT4, PCT5-PCT19, PCT20-PCT36, and HCT1-HCT11. The iterations are Parts 1-250, the Geographic Header file is Part 251. The Geographic Header file is in fixed-format ASCII and the Table files are in comma-delimited ASCII format. The Geographic Header file has 85 variables, Segment 01 has 224 variables, Segment 02 has 240 variables, Segment 03 has 179 variables, and Segment 04 has 141 variables. When all the segments are merged there are 849 variables.

    Description

This dataset provides a list of surnames that are reliably Irish and that can be used for identifying textual references to Irish individuals in the London area and surrounding countryside within striking distance of the capital. This classification of the Irish necessarily includes the Irish-born and their descendants. The dataset has been validated for use on records up to the middle of the nineteenth century, and should only be used in cases in which a few mis-classifications of individuals would not undermine the results of the work, such as large-scale analyses. These data were created through an analysis of the 1841 Census of England and Wales, and validated against the Middlesex Criminal Registers (National Archives HO 26) and the Vagrant Lives Dataset (Crymble, Adam et al. (2014). Vagrant Lives: 14,789 Vagrants Processed by Middlesex County, 1777-1786. Zenodo. 10.5281/zenodo.13103). The sample was derived from the records of the Hundred of Ossulstone, which included much of rural and urban Middlesex, excluding the City of London and Westminster. The analysis was based upon a study of 278,949 adult males. Full details of the methodology for how this dataset was created can be found in the following article, and anyone intending to use this dataset for scholarly research is strongly encouraged to read it so that they understand the strengths and limits of this resource:

Adam Crymble, 'A Comparative Approach to Identifying the Irish in Long Eighteenth Century London', _Historical Methods: A Journal of Quantitative and Interdisciplinary History_, vol. 48, no. 3 (2015): 141-152.

The data here provided includes all 283 names listed in Appendix I of the above paper, but also an additional 209 spelling variations of those root surnames, for a total of 492 names.

    Description

The CenSoc WWII Army Enlistment Dataset is a cleaned and harmonized version of the National Archives and Records Administration’s Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, ca. 1938 - 1946 (2002). It contains enlistment records for over 9 million men and women who served in the United States Army, including the Army Air Corps, Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, and Enlisted Reserve Corps. We publish links between men in the CenSoc WWII Army Enlistment Dataset, Social Security Administration mortality data, and the 1940 Census. The CenSoc Enlistment-Census-1940 file links these enlistment records to the complete 1940 Census, and may be merged with IPUMS-USA census data using the HISTID identifier variable. The CenSoc Enlistment-Numident file links enlistment records to the Berkley Unified Numident Mortality Database (BUNMD), and the CenSoc Enlistment-DMF file links enlistment records to the Social Security Death Master File. For enlistment records in the Enlistment-Numident and Enlistment-DMF datasets that have been independently and additionally linked to the 1940 Census, we include the HISTID identifier variable that can be used to merge the data with IPUMS census data.
