    Description

Founded in 1996, the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a professional basketball league composed of 12 teams from the United States. The Golden State Valkyries registered the highest average home attendance across the 2025 season with 18,064. This was an impressive turnout for the Valkyries', with 2025 being the team's inaugural season in the WNBA, validating the league's decision to expand the league in the San Francisco Bay Area. Player salaries in the WNBA Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever was the highest earner in the WNBA in the 2025 season, with an annual salary of approximately 249,000 U.S. dollars. Meanwhile, looking at the average annual salaries in the WNBA vs. the NBA, the average WNBA player took home around 114,000 U.S. dollars in 2025, which was nearly 100 times lower than the average NBA player salary in the 2024/25 season. WNBA league records Since the opening season in 1997, former and current WNBA players have been setting high standards and surpassing old ones. Sue Bird was the career games leader of the WNBA, having played a remarkable 580 professional games before her retirement in 2022. Meanwhile, the WNBA's all-time scoring leader was Diana Taurasi as of September 2025, who began her career with the Phoenix Mercury in 2004. Recent years have seen high-profile college basketball players also enter the league, such as Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, all of whom have helped in varying degrees in raising the league's viewership.

    Description

This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2023-24, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2024. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. In April 2019, the MSDS transitioned to a new version of the dataset. This version, MSDS v2.0, is an update that introduced a new structure and content - including clinical terminology, in order to meet current clinical practice and incorporate new requirements. It is designed to meet requirements that resulted from the National Maternity Review, which led to the publication of the Better Births report in February 2016. This is the fifth publication of data from MSDS v2.0 and data from 2019-20 onwards is not directly comparable to data from previous years. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with a breakdown for the mother's smoking status at the booking appointment by age group. It also provides counts of live born term babies with breakdowns for the general condition of newborns (via Apgar scores), skin-to-skin contact and baby's first feed type - all immediately after birth. There is also data available in a separate file on breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks. For the first time information on 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' has been presented using annual data from the MSDS. This includes national data broken down by maternal age, ethnicity and deprivation. From 2025/2026, MSDS will become the official source of 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' information and will replace the historic 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' data which is to become retired. We are currently undergoing dual collection and reporting on a quarterly basis for 2024/25 to help users compare information from the two sources. We are working with data submitters to help reconcile any discrepancies at a local level before any close down activities begin. A link to the dual reporting in the SATOD publication series can be found in the links below. Information on how all measures are constructed can be found in the HES Metadata and MSDS Metadata files provided below. In this publication we have also included an interactive Power BI dashboard to enable users to explore key NHS Maternity Statistics measures. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This report will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England. Any feedback on this publication or dashboard can be provided to enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, under the subject “NHS Maternity Statistics”.

    Description

This report contains results from the latest survey of secondary school pupils in England in years 7 to 11 (mostly aged 11 to 15), focusing on smoking, drinking and drug use. It covers a range of topics including prevalence, habits, attitudes, and wellbeing. In 2023 the survey was administered online for the first time, instead of paper-based surveys as in previous years. This move online also meant that completion of the survey could be managed through teacher-led sessions, rather than being conducted by external interviewers. The 2023 survey also introduced additional questions relating to pupils wellbeing. These included how often the pupil felt lonely, felt left out and that they had no-one to talk to. Results of analysis covering these questions have been presented within parts of the report and associated data tables. The report includes this summary report showing key findings, excel tables with more detailed outcomes, technical appendices and a data quality statement. An anonymised record level file of the underlying data on which users can carry out their own analysis will be made available via the UK Data Service in early 2025 (see link below).

While the players on the court might still be college students, the National Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball top division still draws in big crowds. The North Carolina men's basketball team attracted the highest average attendance during the 2025 season. The team, traditionally known as the Tar Heels, had an average home audience of just over 20,521 in 2025. NCAA basketball attracts millions The total paid attendance at NCAA college basketball tournament games reached the highest figure to date in 2013, when nearly 800,000 spectators paid to watch the games. This figure has seen a slight decrease in recent years, with the 2025 count totaling around 708,000 spectators. The Division I basketball tournament, commonly referred to as March Madness, takes the format of a single-elimination tournament between 68 teams. The high-stakes nature of the tournament attracts television viewers reaching into the millions. Over 10 million viewers tuned in during the 2025 tournament, with 18.1 million fans glued to the gripping championship game in 2025 between the Houston Cougars and Florida Gators. March Madness mainstays The Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team is one of the most successful Division I basketball sides in history, so it is no wonder that an average of around 20,000 fans flocked to their home games during the 2025 season. The Wildcats led the association in terms of March Madness appearances – the team had played in a total of 62 tournaments – and had the second most number of NCAA basketball titles as of 2025. The UCLA Bruins top this list, having taken home the title a record 11 times. The Los Angeles-based program achieved enormous success in the 1960s and 1970s, but their only title since that period came back in 1995. The Bruins reached the Final Four stage of the tournament for three years running between 2006 and 2008, as well as in 2021, but have been unable to recapture the success of times gone by.
