    Description

Native Land Digital strives to create and foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous ways of knowing, and settler-Indigenous relations, through educational resources such as our map and Territory Acknowledgement Guide. We strive to go beyond old ways of talking about Indigenous people and to develop a platform where Indigenous communities can represent themselves and their histories on their own terms. In doing so, Native Land Digital creates spaces where non-Indigenous people can be invited and challenged to learn more about the lands they inhabit, the history of those lands, and how to actively be part of a better future going forward together.

This map does not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations. It is not suitable for native title or any land claim.

    Description

This map presents work carried out by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) for The Encyclopedia of Aboriginal Australia. The map attempts, using all the published resources available at the time of production (1988-1994), to represent all the language or tribal or nation groups of the indigenous people of Australia. The regions were analysed by using the watershed basins as a template and then superimposing all the groups on that base and determining where such factors as culture, language and trade indicated the relationships between groups to be. The map indicates only the general location of larger groupings of people. Boundaries are not intended to be exact. The views expressed in this publication are not those of AIATSIS. For more detailed information about the groups of people in a particular region, contact the relevant land councils. This map is not suitable for use in Native Title and other land claims. The product size is 85cm x 60cm and is available flat and folded.

    Description

Introduction and Rationale: Due to our increasing understanding of the role the surrounding landscape plays in ecological processes, a detailed characterization of land cover, including both agricultural and natural habitats, is ever more important for both researchers and conservation practitioners. Unfortunately, in the United States, different types of land cover data are split across thematic datasets that emphasize agricultural or natural vegetation, but not both. To address this data gap and reduce duplicative efforts in geospatial processing, we merged two major datasets, the LANDFIRE National Vegetation Classification (NVC) and USDA-NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL), to produce an integrated land cover map. Our workflow leveraged strengths of the NVC and the CDL to produce detailed rasters comprising both agricultural and natural land-cover classes. We generated these maps for each year from 2012-2021 for the conterminous United States, quantified agreement between input layers and accuracy of our merged product, and published the complete workflow necessary to update these data. In our validation analyses, we found that approximately 5.5% of NVC agricultural pixels conflicted with the CDL, but we resolved a majority of these conflicts based on surrounding agricultural land, leaving only 0.6% of agricultural pixels unresolved in our merged product. Contents: Spatial data Attribute table for merged rasters Technical validation data Number and proportion of mismatched pixels Number and proportion of unresolved pixels Producer's and User's accuracy values and coverage of reference data Resources in this dataset:Resource Title: Attribute table for merged rasters. File Name: CombinedRasterAttributeTable_CDLNVC.csvResource Description: Raster attribute table for merged raster product. Class names and recommended color map were taken from USDA-NASS Cropland Data Layer and LANDFIRE National Vegetation Classification. Class values are also identical to source data, except classes from the CDL are now negative values to avoid overlapping NVC values. Resource Title: Number and proportion of mismatched pixels. File Name: pixel_mismatch_byyear_bycounty.csvResource Description: Number and proportion of pixels that were mismatched between the Cropland Data Layer and National Vegetation Classification, per year from 2012-2021, per county in the conterminous United States.Resource Title: Number and proportion of unresolved pixels. File Name: unresolved_conflict_byyear_bycounty.csvResource Description: Number and proportion of unresolved pixels in the final merged rasters, per year from 2012-2021, per county in the conterminous United States. Unresolved pixels are a result of mismatched pixels that we could not resolve based on surrounding agricultural land (no agriculture with 90m radius).Resource Title: Producer's and User's accuracy values and coverage of reference data. File Name: accuracy_datacoverage_byyear_bycounty.csvResource Description: Producer's and User's accuracy values and coverage of reference data, per year from 2012-2021, per county in the conterminous United States. We defined coverage of reference data as the proportional area of land cover classes that were included in the reference data published by USDA-NASS and LANDFIRE for the Cropland Data Layer and National Vegetation Classification, respectively. CDL and NVC classes with reference data also had published accuracy statistics. Resource Title: Data Dictionary. File Name: Data_Dictionary_RasterMerge.csv

The Australia's Indigenous land and forest estate (2020) is a continental spatial dataset that identifies and reports separately the individual attributes of Australia's Indigenous estate, namely the extent of land and forest over which Indigenous peoples and communities have ownership, management and co-management, or other special rights. This dataset is the same as the previously published Australia's Indigenous forest estate (2020) (released 03 December 2020) but with an amended title that more accurately reflects the full extent of the dataset. It was developed from multiple data sources, including national, state and territory datasets related to land in which there is an Indigenous interest. The Indigenous land dataset is then combined with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2018) dataset. The dataset was compiled by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) for the National Forest Inventory (NFI), a collaborative partnership between the Australian and state and territory governments. The role of the NFI is to collate, integrate and communicate information on Australia's forests. The NFI applies a national classification to state and territory data to allow seamless integration of these datasets. Multiple independent sources of external data are used to fill data gaps and improve the quality of final datasets. The following attributes are applied in this dataset: Indigenous owned: Freehold land or forest that is owned by Indigenous communities, or land and forest for which ownership is vested through other mechanisms. Indigenous managed: Land or forest that is managed by Indigenous communities. Indigenous co-managed: Land or forest that has formal, legally binding agreements in place to include input from Indigenous people in the process of developing and implementing a management plan. Other special rights: Land or forest subject to native title determinations, registered Indigenous Land Use Agreements and legislated special cultural use provisions. In this dataset, the attributes of Indigenous ownership, Indigenous management or co-management, and other special rights are applied separately. The dataset structure therefore differs from Indigenous estate datasets published by ABARES in 2018 or earlier.

    Description

Abstract Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) is a continental spatial dataset of forest and non-forest land over which Indigenous peoples and communities have ownership, management or co-management, or other special rights. This layer displays the area of land and forest that is in the Indigenous managed and Indigenous co-managed attributes. It was developed from multiple data sources, including national, state and territory datasets related to land in which there is an Indigenous interest. The Indigenous land dataset is then combined with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2023) dataset. In this dataset, the attributes of Indigenous ownership, Indigenous management or co-management, and other special rights are applied separately. Currency Date modified: 30 June 2023 Publication Date: 28 October 2024 Modification frequency: Every 5 years Data Extent Coordinate reference: GDA94 / Australian Albers Spatial Extent North: -8.0 South: -46.0 East: 168.0 West: 100.0 Source Information Data, Metadata, Maps and Interactive views are available from Australia's Indigenous Land and Forest Estate (2024), Descriptive Metadata PDF. The data was obtained from Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES). Lineage Statement The process for describing and reporting separately on each of the individual attributes of Indigenous ownership, Indigenous management or co management, or other special rights for Indigenous peoples and communities is described in Jacobsen et al. (2020). The method and data in this data package represents the information on the Indigenous land estate by the above separate attributes in accordance with Jacobsen et al. (2020) and primarily uses data with information current between 2021 and 2023. Additional data previously sourced for the Indigenous estate dataset that informed Australia’s State of the Forests Report 2018 was also used in this compilation. The Indigenous land dataset is combined (intersected) with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2023) dataset (ABARES 2023). The resulting output dataset provides information on the Indigenous estate over forest and non-forest land. Information used to develop the Australia’s Indigenous land and forest estate (2024) dataset was sourced from: * Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry * Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water * Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation * National Native Title Tribunal * NSW Land Registry Services * NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water * NT Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics * Queensland Department of Resources * Land Services SA * Tasmania Department of Natural Resources and Environment * Victoria Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action * WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions * WA Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage * WA Land Information Authority, trading as Landgate Note: The Digital Atlas of Australia downloaded a copy of the source data in November 2024. To ensure that it was suitable to be hosted through ArcGIS Image Server & Image Dedicated, this copy had RGB fields added to the attribute table to generate a colour map. Data Dictionary

    Description

This is a superseded dataset, the most recent Australia's Indigenous land and forest estate spatial dataset can be found at: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/forest-data-maps-and-tools/spatial-data/indigenous-land-and-forest.

Australia’s Indigenous forest estate (2018) is a continental spatial dataset of forest and non-forest land over which Indigenous peoples and communities have ownership, management, or rights of use, assembled for Australia's State of the Forests Report 2018. It was developed from multiple data sources, including national, state and territory datasets related to land in which there is an Indigenous interest. The Indigenous land dataset is then combined with forest cover information from the Forests of Australia (2018) dataset: https://data.gov.au/data/dataset/forests-of-australia-2018

Multiple independent sources of external data are used to fill data gaps and improve the quality of the final dataset.

The NFI classifies Indigenous land into four categories: *Indigenous owned and managed: freehold land that is both owned and managed by Indigenous communities *Indigenous managed: land that is managed, but not owned, by Indigenous communities; and lands that are owned by Indigenous people but have formal shared management agreements with Australia and state and territory government agencies *Indigenous co-managed: land that is owned and managed by other parties, but has a formal, legally binding agreement in place that includes input from Indigenous people in the process of developing and implementing a management plan *Other Special rights: land subject to native title determination, registered Indigenous land use agreement, and legislated special cultural use provision.

The Australia’s Indigenous forest estate (2018) dataset is produced to fulfil requirements of Australia's National Forest Policy Statement and the Regional Forests Agreement Act 2002 (Cwth), and is used by the Australian Government for domestic and international reporting.

This dataset is updated every five years for the Australia's State of the Forests Report Series. Further information can be found on the Forests Australia website: http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/forestsaustralia/sofr/sofr-2018

    Description

[Metadata] Description: Government Landownership in the State of Hawaii as of 2022: County, Federal, State, and State DHHL LandsSources: County of Kauai, April, 2022; City & County of Honolulu, April 27, 2022; County of Maui, April, 2022; County of Hawaii, April, 2022; State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, October, 2022. This dataset was created using ownership information provided by the counties via tax map key parcel layers and ownership tables. Parcels were queried using the "Owner" field for state, county, and federal agency names. State GIS staff verified land ownership using the online service QPublic, the 2022 Department of Hawaiian Home Lands layer and other GIS layers and resources. Where ownership was still unclear, State GIS personnel reached out to appropriate agencies for clarification. Summary fields “majorowner” and “type” were created using additional filters, queries and analysis tools to summarize the data based upon government ownership sector and type. Also see detailed government ownership layer (gov_own_detailed) which is comprised of government land ownership by TMK parcel. The parcel boundaries are intended to provide a visual reference only and do not represent legal or survey level accuracy. Attributes are for assessment purposes only and are subject to change at any time. Description

These maps are master copies which were created for a cadastre, a public register recording the boundaries, roads, waterways, identifiers and names for a parcel of land. The maps were adapted to chart the changes of subdivisional patterns and land status changes created by the registration of deposited plans. The maps contain contemporary and historical subdivision information.

Other notations may include strata plans, Crown grant boundaries and grant information if the land is Torrens, Old System or Crown land title. Also included are Primary Applications (PA) and Conversion Actions (CA), historical subdivision plans, road plans, acquisitions, resumption dedications and other land status changes recorded in government gazettes. Parish, county, locality and local government authority are also shown.

The maps charted subdivisional, status and boundary changes. These maps use the Central Mapping Authority (CMA) index maps drawn at a range of scales. They do not show land use or ownership changes.

Each map title is prefaced by MC; for Master Copy;, for example, MC/Q0162-06. The numbering runs across quadrants of the original topographic map which provides the first number. Some quadrants are divided again, resulting in a more complex number.

In September 2002 the manual updating of all Land and Property Information paper maps was discontinued. All notations, status and subdivisional changes are made in the Integrated Titling System (ITS) and the Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB). All charting information regarding subdivision and status changes since September 2002 is provided to the public through the Cadastral Records Enquiry (CRE) also known as the Property Location Map.
