In Italy, the overall cost of natural gas was for vulnerable protected customers was approximately *** euro cents per cubic meter in May 2025. The network prices for final non-household customers will from now on, and dating back to 2009, be derived from administrative data sources. This now follows the methodology for households. Consumption data can be combined with tariffs that are published on the websites of the network companies, providing the necessary data to compile the prices. The change in methodology is carried out for the full time-series, making sure the network prices are consistent and price changes are not the result of varying measurement approaches.

When will new figures be published? New provisional figures will be published three months after the semesters end, at the end of September and at the end of March.

In 2024, the price of natural gas in Europe reached 11 constant U.S. dollars per million British thermal units, compared with 2.2 U.S. dollars in the U.S. This was a notable decrease compared to the previous year, which had seen a steep increase in prices due to an energy supply shortage exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war. Natural gas prices are the highest in the residential sector. In 2024, U.S. households paid 14.59 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet, down from an all-time high of over 15.2 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic feet. Overall, U.S. residential natural gas prices have increased nearly tenfold since 1975. Commercial natural gas costs were second-highest, while prices in the electric power sector were the lowest, at around three U.S. dollars on average. Prices for the industrial and electric power customers tend to be close to the wholesale electricity price. The growing natural gas market U.S. natural gas consumption has increased more than any other fuel after the U.S. oil boom of the 2010s. Petroleum consumption has been more variable, and use of coal has significantly decreased. Today, natural gas is used extensively for electric power generation, with it having overtaken coal as the primary electricity generating source. This is despite coal prices being a lot less volatile and generally lower than natural gas. Future of natural gas on the global stage Natural gas is also an important energy source worldwide. Dutch TTF is seen as a Europe-wide natural gas price benchmark. Europe more reliant on imports The Groningen gas field is the largest gas field in Europe and the major natural gas source in the Netherlands. In 2014, the first earthquake related to drilling the field occurred, and other seismic activities were also observed. Therefore, the Groningen field has drastically reduced its production output. Since then, natural gas production in the Netherlands has been in a trend of continuous decline. To balance the diminished domestic production, the European market relies on liquefied natural gas imports and pipeline inflow. LNG pricing across European regions The European gas market exhibits regional variations, as evidenced by LNG prices in different parts of the continent. The Southwest Europe LNG price is generally slightly higher than LNG prices in Northwest Europe. The latter reached around ***** U.S. dollars per million British thermal units in November 2025.

Prices for annual gas consumption for industry in Poland fluctuated slightly between 2008 and 2020. However, prices began to rise from the first half of 2021, reaching their peak in the second half of 2022 at more than *** euro cents per kilowatt hour. The lowest annual price for gas consumption occurred in 2016, at **** euros per kWh. In the first half of 2024, prices dropped to **** euro cents per kilowatt hour. Structure of natural gas supplies to Poland Gas purchases from abroad, in the amount of ***** TWh, were supplemented with gas from domestic sources in the amount of ** TWh. Total gas supplies from abroad in 2022 included imports and intra-Community acquisitions. The natural gas prices for household consumers have slightly increased in Romania in the first half of 2024. The price for natural gas that household consumers were paying in the first semester of 2023 the price has increased by six percent compared to the same semester of the following year, the average price for household consumers in 2022 reached 12.65 euro cents per kilowatt-hour. However, in 2024, the prices dropped considerably, reaching a price of 5.81 euro cents in the first half of 2024.
