The annual land cover data of Nepal (2000-2022) have been created through the National Land Cover Monitoring System (NLCMS) for Nepal. The system uses freely available remote-sensing data (Landsat) and a cloud-based machine learning architecture in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to generate land cover maps on an annual basis using a harmonized and consistent classification system.
The NLCMS is developed by the Forest Research and Training Centre (FRTC), Ministry of Forests and Environment, Government of Nepal with support from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) through SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH), a joint initiative in partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Collaborators include SERVIR–Mekong at the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), SilvaCarbon, Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) group at the University of Maryland, and the US Forest Service.
The annual land cover data of Nepal for 2000-2019 was first published in 2022 while the data for 2020-2022 was released in 2024.

This dataset includes georeferenced plot-level forest carbon estimates for Nepal as a supplement to a data paper submitted to the Scientific Data journal. The dataset is based on field observations from Nepal's national forest inventory from 2010 to 2014 and includes estimates for two major forest carbon pools: aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks from 2,009 and 1,156 inventory plots, respectively. The forest AGB includes all trees within each sample plot, including standing dead and stumps, while the forest SOC stock includes the organic carbon in the 0-30 cm depth. The organic litter was excluded from the plot-level estimates of SOC due to missing records for many plots. Other analyses have reported a very low contribution of litter to the total carbon stocks in Nepal's forests (

The past few decades have seen high levels of deforestation and forest degradation in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. In this context, under SERVIR Himalaya programme, ICIMOD has developed forest cover monitoring system to identify forest change hotspot areas which need critical forest management attention in four pilot areas. This forest cover data of Sarlahi, Nepal for 2014 has been developed using LandSat 8 data in a semi-automated manner as part of the forest cover monitoring system.

Digital polygon dataset of Community Forest area Boundary of Kayar Khola Watershed, Chitwan, Nepal. This dataset is created using GeoEye 0.5 meter spatial resolution satellite image of November 2009 and field verified in 2010. The data was prepared for the Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) Pilot Project. This is a joint project of ICIMOD with Asian Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB) and Federation of Community for Forest Users of Nepal (FECOFUN) funded by NORAD.
