TwitterIn 2020, China had a youth literacy rate of about **** percent. In contrast, Afghanistan's youth literacy rate stood at **** percent in 2021.Indicators for the literacy rateAn indicator which can be seen to affect the literacy rate is the governmental effort in investing in education. The amount of funds invested into the education sector is a factor which can determine a country’s state of education, as the amount of money being spent on education would have an impact on resources, learning environment, and teaching quality. Singapore’s student-teacher ratio in primary education is significantly lower than that of South Asian countries. For instance, Nepal had 20.3 students for every teacher in 2019. Meanwhile, Singaporean teachers only had around **** students on average as of 2020. Notably, South Asia, together with sub-Saharan Africa, had a much higher illiteracy rate compared to the East Asian and Pacific region in 2022. The importance of literacyThe literacy rate indicates the percentage of people within a population who can read and write. This enables them to identify, understand and interpret materials with various contexts. Ensuring literacy for all pupils is a part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for quality education. This in turn stimulates economic and societal growth for the future.

Feed the Future activities in Nepal include the Business Literacy (BL) Program, which operates in conjunction with the Knowledge-Based Integrated Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition (KISAN) Project. Nepal Business Literacy (BL) Impact Evaluation (IE) is designed to collect and analyze three rounds of qualitative and quantitative data collected in order to learn from evidence of the extent to which initial and persistent results of the BL training course occur. The Nepal BL IE is designed to investigate initial and longer-term or persistent impacts of the training experience on targeted aspects of beneficiaries’ knowledge, skills, attitudes (KSA), and behaviors. Investigators also are interested in whether and to what extent the BL training experience leads to adoption of targeted behaviors, such as starting new micro enterprises, that persist over time.

ObjectiveAs Nepalese pregnant women vary widely in literacy levels and cultural backgrounds and are reluctant to make decisions about their health, general interventions are insufficient to improve maternal anemia. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of “face-to-face health education using educational material created using pictures, photos, and nomograms” in reducing anemia and improving health literacy.MethodsA total of 156 Nepalese pregnant women with hemoglobin (Hb) levels below 11.0 g/dl were divided into three groups: the education group received three sessions of face-to-face health education using art-based material unaffected by literacy skills; the distribution group received material used in the education group; and the control group underwent general perinatal checkups. Hb levels and health literacy scores were assessed at baseline early pregnancy (8–12 weeks) and late pregnancy (36–40 weeks). A Nepalese version of the 14-item Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14) was developed to assess health literacy.ResultsThe post-intervention three-group comparison showed a statistically significant difference (P < 0.042) in mean Hb levels after the intervention. Dunnett’s test showed a statistically significant difference (P < 0.044) between the education and control groups but no significant difference between the distribution and control groups (P = 0.972). No significant differences in health literacy (total scores and subscales) were observed among the three groups before the intervention in the Kruskal-Wallis test and after the intervention (although there was a trend towards improvement). Total health literacy scores before and after the intervention were statistically significantly different for the total group and all three groups (P
