    The United States net petroleum import volume amounted to a negative 2.34 million barrels per day in 2024. The North American country became a net exporter of petroleum in 2020, when its net import volume reached a negative 651 thousand barrels per day. During the displayed period net imports have decreased notably, having reached a peak of 12.55 million barrels per day in 2005. Following the advent of unconventional shale extraction, the U.S. was able to achieve a trade surplus.
