The study analyzes the forces leading to or impeding the assimilation of 18- to 32-year-olds from immigrant backgrounds that vary in terms of race, language, and the mix of skills and liabilities their parents brought to the United States. To make sure that what we find derives specifically from growing up in an immigrant family, rather than simply being a young person in New York, a comparison group of people from native born White, Black, and Puerto Rican backgrounds was also studied. The sample was drawn from New York City (except for Staten Island) and the surrounding counties in the inner part of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region where the vast majority of immigrants and native born minority group members live and grow up. The study groups make possible a number of interesting comparisons. Unlike many other immigrant groups, the West Indian first generation speaks English, but the dominant society racially classifies them as Black. The study explored how their experiences resemble or differ from native born African Americans. Dominicans and the Colombian-Peruvian-Ecuadoran population both speak Spanish, but live in different parts of New York, have different class backgrounds prior to immigration, and, quite often, different skin tones. The study compared them to Puerto Rican young people, who, along with their parents, have the benefit of citizenship. Chinese immigrants from the mainland tend to have little education, while young people with overseas Chinese parents come from families with higher incomes, more education, and more English fluency. Respondents were divided into eight groups depending on their parents' origin. Those of immigrant ancestry include: Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union; Chinese immigrants from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese Diaspora; immigrants from the Dominican Republic; immigrants from the English-speaking countries of the West Indies (including Guyana but excluding Haiti and those of Indian origin); and immigrants from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. These groups composed 44 percent of the 2000 second-generation population in the defined sample area. For comparative purposes, Whites, Blacks, and Puerto Ricans who were born in the United States and whose parents were born in the United States or Puerto Rico were also interviewed. To be eligible, a respondent had to have a parent from one of these groups. If the respondent was eligible for two groups, he or she was asked which designation he or she preferred. The ability to compare these groups with native born Whites, Blacks, and Puerto Ricans permits researchers to investigate the effects of nativity while controlling for race and language background. About two-thirds of second-generation respondents were born in the United States, mostly in New York City, while one-third were born abroad but arrived in the United States by age 12 and had lived in the country for at least 10 years, except for those from the former Soviet Union, some of whom arrived past the age of 12. The project began with a pilot study in July 1996. Survey data collection took place between November 1999 and December 1999. The study includes demographic variables such as race, ethnicity, language, age, education, income, family size, country of origin, and citizenship status.

TwitterThe purpose of this study was to examine interrelated issues surrounding the use of the criminal justice system by immigrant victims and to identify ways to improve the criminal justice response to immigrants' needs and problems. Two cities, New York City and Philadelphia, were selected for intensive investigation of victimization of immigrants. In each of these cities, three immigrant communities in a neighborhood were chosen for participation. In New York's Jackson Heights area, Colombians, Dominicans, and Indians were the ethnic groups studied. In Philadelphia's Logan section, Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Koreans were surveyed. In all, 87 Jackson Heights victims were interviewed and 26 Philadelphia victims were interviewed. The victim survey questions addressed can be broadly divided into two categories: issues pertaining to crime reporting and involvement with the court system by immigrant victims. Variables include type of crime, respondent's role in the incident, relationship to the perpetrator, whether the incident was reported to police, and who reported the incident. Respondents were also asked whether they were asked to go to court, whether they understood what the people in court said to them, whether they understood what was happening in their case, and, if victimized again, whether they would report the incident to the police.

BackgroundImmigrants in New York City (NYC) have higher COVID-19 mortality than the general population. While migrant-serving organizations (MSOs) provide access to a breadth of services, they are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic due to staffing limitations, funding cuts, and resource limitations of communities served.MethodsSix focus-group discussions were conducted to explore the experiences of MSOs in NYC during the COVID-19 pandemic from November 2021 to March 2022. Study participants csomprised a subsample of survey respondents from a larger study identified via lists of MSOs.ResultsTwenty-seven organizational representatives from 11 MSOs across NYC participated in the discussions. In addition to providing information on communities served, services offered, and organizational characteristics, the following themes emerged from the convenings: mental health challenges and resources needed for immigrants; immigration-related challenges; factors exacerbating hardships for immigrants during COVID-19; interorganizational collaborations and partnerships; policy change; and needs/requests of MSOs. MSOs provide a wide range of services as non-profit organizations and use interorganizational collaboration to improve service delivery. The proximity of MSOs to immigrant communities helps providers understand the needs of immigrants relating to the COVID-19 pandemic and factors that shape telehealth services.ConclusionMSOs are important providers and advocates for immigration policy in the US given their relationship with the populations they serve. These findings have implications for how to support MSOs that serve immigrants in NYC. Strategies to achieve this include timelier availability and exchange of information, policies, and research as well as strengthening the experience-based advocacy of these groups.

The main aim of this research is to study the criminal mobility of ethnic-based organized crime groups. The project examines whether organized crime groups are able to move abroad easily and to reproduce their territorial control in a foreign country, or whether these groups, and/or individual members, start a life of crime only after their arrival in the new territories, potentially as a result of social exclusion, economic strain, culture conflict and labeling. More specifically, the aim is to examine the criminal mobility of ethnic Albanian organized crime groups involved in a range of criminal markets and operating in and around New York City, area and to study the relevance of the importation/alien conspiracy model versus the deprivation model of organized crime in relation to Albanian organized crime. There are several analytical dimensions in this study: (1) reasons for going abroad; (2) the nature of the presence abroad; (3) level of support from ethnic constituencies in the new territories; (4) importance of cultural codes; (5) organizational structure; (6) selection of criminal activities; (7) economic incentives and political infiltration. This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach with a sequential exploratory design, in which qualitative data and documents are collected and analyzed first, followed by quantitative data. Demographic variables in this collection include age, gender, birth place, immigration status, nationality, ethnicity, education, religion, and employment status. Two main data sources were employed: (1) court documents, including indictments and court transcripts related to select organized crime cases (84 court documents on 29 groups, 254 offenders); (2) in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 9 ethnic Albanian offenders currently serving prison sentences in U.S. Federal Prisons for organized crime related activities, and with 79 adult ethnic Albanian immigrants in New York, including common people, undocumented migrants, offenders, and people with good knowledge of Albanian organized crime modus operandi. Sampling for these data were conducted in five phases, the first of which involved researchers examining court documents and identifying members of 29 major ethnic Albanian organized crime groups operating in the New York area between 1975 and 2013 who were or had served sentences in the U.S. Federal Prisons for organized crime related activities. In phase two researchers conducted eight in-depth interviews with law enforcement experts working in New York or New Jersey. Phase three involved interviews with members of the Albanian diaspora and filed observations from an ethnographic study. Researchers utilized snowball and respondent driven (RDS) recruitment methods to create the sample for the diaspora dataset. The self-reported criteria for recruitment to participate in the diaspora interviews were: (1) age 18 or over; (2) of ethnic Albanian origin (foreign-born or 1st/2nd generation); and (3) living in NYC area for at least 1 year. They also visited neighborhoods identified as high concentrations of ethnic Albanian individuals and conducted an ethnographic study to locate the target population. In phase four, data for the cultural advisors able to help with the project data was collected. In the fifth and final phase, researchers gathered data for the second wave of the diaspora data, and conducted interviews with offenders with ethnic Albanian immigrants with knowledge of the organized crime situation in New York City area. Researchers also approached about twenty organized crime figures currently serving a prison sentence, and were able to conduct 9 in-depth interviews.

Project Overview This dataset contains all qualitative and quantitative journaling data collected in “The Pandemic Journaling Project, Subproject 1, PJP - Immigrant Women in NYC” (henceforth PJP-IW/NYC). The Pandemic Journaling Project (PJP) is a combined journaling platform and interdisciplinary, mixed-methods research study developed by anthropologists, with support from a team of colleagues and students across the social sciences, humanities, and health fields. PJP launched in Spring 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic was emerging in the United States. It was created in order to “pre-design an archive” of COVID-19 narratives and experiences and was open to anyone around the world with access to a smartphone or computer. PJP ran on a weekly basis for two years (May 2020 - May 2022). The dataset for the first phase of PJP (PJP-1) can be accessed through the Qualitative Data Repository (QDR). (See Related Data field in Metadata.) PJP-IW/NYC used a modified version of the PJP platform to pursue two research objectives: 1) examine the ongoing challenges associated with COVID-19 among immigrant women to the US living in New York City (NYC), and 2) explore the feasibility and efficacy of an online journaling-based project with vulnerable populations. The project focused on two immigrant populations in NYC that were particularly hard-hit by the pandemic: the South Asian and Latinx immigrant communities. The project ran from February to August 2023, and it was underway when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the COVID-19 global health emergency in May 2023. PJP-IW/NYC was approved as a research study by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Connecticut. Eligibility criteria for participation included: 1) identify as an immigrant, 2) identify as a woman, 3) aged 18 years or more, 4) born in a country in South Asia or Latin America, and 5) currently live in NYC. The interface was accessible in English, Bangla (Bengali), and Spanish. Similarly to PJP-1, participants could create journal entries using their choice of text, images, and/or audio recordings. Data and Data Collection Overview This dataset contains all journal entries and closed-ended survey responses submitted as part of the PJP-IW/NYC study, along with accompanying descriptive and explanatory materials. The dataset includes individual journal entries and accompanying quantitative survey responses from a total of 34 participants, of whom 24 are from South Asia and 10 participants from Latin America. Of the 427 journal entries in total (248 from the South Asian sample and 179 from the Latinx sample), 47 included images and 12 were submitted as audio files. Each time a participant created a journal entry, they could choose to submit it as text or by attaching it as an audio file; an image with accompanying text; or an image with an accompanying audio file. All attached files, regardless of format, are cataloged as they were submitted. As a result, one video file has been cataloged with the images. Twenty-nine of the images consist of photos and one video of hand-written journal entries in Bangla. Some entries are labeled as "dup," which denotes that a participant completed a specific survey (e.g., survey 10) more than once. All data were collected via the Qualtrics survey platform. PJP-IW/NYC participants were introduced to the project by local community-based organization (CBO) partners that serve immigrant women from South Asian and/or Latin American countries. Information about the study was also provided on PJP’s website, an archived version of which is also shared here (Project Webpages). Prospective participants received a code from CBO partners that they then used to access the online eligibility screener. Those deemed eligible were invited to read an online information sheet and give their consent. They were then taken directly to the baseline survey and Week 1 journaling prompts. Participants were asked to provide a single piece of contact information — an email address or mobile phone number — which was then used to distribute subsequent bi-weekly invitations to participate over the next six months. This contact information has been stripped from the dataset and is not accessible to researchers. Each bi-weekly invitation to journal included a link to that week’s journaling prompts and, periodically, several accompanying survey questions, which can be found in “Quantitive Survey Questions.” In addition to journaling, the project also included other research methods that generated data. Around Month 3, participants were invited to participate in an in-depth interview about their experiences of life disruptions associated with COVID-19. Interviews centered on shifts in relationships, jobs, and housing, as well as the ongoing impact of such disruptions on participants’ mental health and perceptions of wellbeing. It had the largest white population, for both native born and foreign born persons, and together these groups made up over 7.1 million of New York's 7.2 million inhabitants at this time. The United States' industrial centers to the north and northeast were one of the most important economic draws during this period, and states in these regions had the largest foreign born white populations. Ethnic minorities Immigration into the agricultural southern states was much lower than the north, and these states had the largest Black populations due to the legacy of slavery - this balance would begin to shift in the following decades as a large share of the Black population migrated to urban centers to the north during the Great Migration. The Japanese and Chinese populations at this time were more concentrated in the West, as these states were the most common point of entry for Asians into the country. The states with the largest Native American populations were to the west and southwest, due to the legacy of forced displacement - this included the Indian Territory, an unorganized and independent territory assigned to the Native American population in the early 1800s, although this was incorporated into Oklahoma when it was admitted into the union in 1907. Additionally, non-taxpaying Native Americans were historically omitted from the U.S. Census, as they usually lived in separate communities and could not vote or hold office - more of an effort was made to count all Native Americans from 1890 onward, although there are likely inaccuracies in the figures given here. Changing distribution Internal migration in the 20th century greatly changed population distribution across the country, with California and Florida now ranking among the three most populous states in the U.S. today, while they were outside the top 20 in 1900. The growth of Western states' populations was largely due to the wave of internal migration during the Great Depression, where unemployment in the east saw many emigrate to "newer" states in search of opportunity, as well as significant immigration from Latin America (especially Mexico) and Asia since the mid-1900s.

The United Arab Emirates and Qatar both rank high in quality-of-life rankings for immigrants. A significant number of migrant workers in the GCC originate from Asia, with the most originating from Bangladesh. As of 2022, nearly ***** thousand Bangladeshi citizens expatriated to work in GCC nations. The American melting pot The United States is known for having high levels of diversity and migration. Migration to the United States experienced peaks from the periods of 1990-1999 as well as 1900-1909. Currently, Latin Americans are the largest migrant group in the United States, followed by migrants from Asia. Out of each state, California has some of the highest naturalization rates. In 2021, ******* people in California naturalized as U.S. citizens, followed by Florida, New York, Texas, and New Jersey.

IIMMLA was supported by the Russell Sage Foundation. Since 1991, the Russell Sage Foundation has funded a program of research aimed at assessing how well the young adult offspring of recent immigrants are faring as they move through American schools and into the labor market. Two previous major studies have begun to tell us about the paths to incorporation of the children of contemporary immigrants: The Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS), and the Immigrant Second Generation in New York study. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles study is the third major initiative analyzing the progress of the new second generation in the United States. The Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA) study focused on young adult children of immigrants (1.5- and second-generation) in greater Los Angeles. IIMMLA investigated mobility among young adult (ages 20-39) children of immigrants in metropolitan Los Angeles and, in the case of the Mexican-origin population there, among young adult members of the third- or later generations. The five-county Los Angeles metropolitan area (Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties) contains the largest concentrations of Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Filipinos, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, and other nationalities in the United States. The diverse migration histories and modes of incorporation of these groups made the Los Angeles metropolitan area a strategic choice for a comparison study of the pathways of immigrant incorporation and mobility from one generation to the next. The IIMMLA study compared six foreign-born (1.5-generation) and foreign-parentage (second-generation) groups (Mexicans, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Central Americans from Guatemala and El Salvador) with three native-born and native-parentage comparison groups (third- or later-generation Mexican Americans, and non-Hispanic Whites and Blacks). The targeted groups represent both the diversity of modes of incorporation in the United States and the range of occupational backgrounds and immigration status among contemporary immigrants (from professionals and entrepreneurs to laborers, refugees, and unauthorized migrants). The surveys provide basic demographic information as well as extensive data about socio-cultural orientation and mobility (e.g., language use, ethnic identity, religion, remittances, intermarriage, experiences of discrimination), economic mobility (e.g., parents' background, respondents' education, first and current job, wealth and income, encounters with the law), geographic mobility (childhood and present neighborhood of residence), and civic engagement and politics (political attitudes, voting behavior, as well as naturalization and transnational ties).

Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, continues to be the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States (US) affecting the public health and the economy. Suffolk County, New York (NY) has one of the highest incidence in NY State affecting primarily the Hispanic/Latino population working ingardening, landscaping, and agriculture (field workers). However, there is a paucity of research among this population. Thus, the aim of this longitudinal study was to assess the current seroprevalence and seroconversion of the Borrelia burgdorferi infection and its risk factors such as sociodemographic, symptoms, tick encounter, and use of the Fatigue Severity Scale, associated with seropositivity in the Hispanic/Latino immigrant worker population of Eastern Suffolk County. Recruitment of participants were based on several towns of this County. Following signed informed consent, participants completed a questionnaire and had their blood drawn. Samples were tested using the conventional 2-tiered serological testing for Borreliosis.

TwitterAt the end of the Revolutionary Period in United States history, the majority of white settlers in the United States of America had English heritage. The Thirteen Colonies, which claimed independence in 1776, was part of the British Empire until this point - English settlers and their descendants made up over 60 percent of the population by 1790. The English were the ethnic majority (among whites) in all states except Pennsylvania, which had a similarly-sized German population, while New York had a sizeable Dutch population as it was a former Dutch colony. The second-largest group was the Irish, where those from both the island's north and south made up a combined 10 percent of the population, followed by the Scottish and Germans at over eight percent each. Outside of the United States, the French and Spanish territories that would later be incorporated into the Union were majority French and Spanish - despite their large size they were relatively sparsely populated. The composition of the U.S. population would change drastically throughout the 19th century due largely to waves of migration from Europe.

Infectious diseases can cause steep declines in wildlife populations, leading to changes in genetic diversity that may affect the susceptibility of individuals to infection and the overall resilience of populations to pathogen outbreaks. Here, we examine evidence for a genetic bottleneck in a population of American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) before and after the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV). More than 50% of marked birds in this population were lost over the two-year period of the epizootic, representing a 10-fold increase in adult mortality. Using analyses of SNPs and microsatellite markers, we tested for evidence of a genetic bottleneck and compared levels of inbreeding and immigration in the pre- and post-WNV populations. Counter to expectations, genetic diversity (allelic diversity and the number of new alleles) increased after WNV emergence. This was likely due to increases in immigration, as the estimated membership coefficients were lower in the post-WNV population. Simultaneously, however, the frequency of inbreeding appeared to increase: mean inbreeding coefficients were higher among SNP markers, and heterozygosity-heterozygosity correlations were stronger among microsatellite markers, in the post-WNV population. These results indicate that loss of genetic diversity at the population level is not an inevitable consequence of a population decline, particularly in the presence of gene flow. The changes observed in post-WNV crows could have very different implications for their response to future pathogen risks, potentially making the population as a whole more resilient to a changing pathogen community, while increasing the frequency of inbred individuals with elevated susceptibility to disease. Methods Study population and data collection. Crows in the Ithaca, New York, population are cooperative breeders. They live in groups of up to 14 birds, including a socially bonded pair of adults as well as 0-12 auxiliary birds, which are usually offspring from previous broods). Although auxiliaries usually do not contribute offspring to the brood, molecular work in the post-WNV population indicates that auxiliary males occasionally do sire extra-pair offspring with the female breeder, arising both through incest (mothers mating with their adult auxiliary sons) and through matings between non-relatives (e.g., unrelated step-mothers and adult auxiliary males). Genetic samples were collected from crow nestlings from 1990–2011. We collected blood (~150 ul) from the brachial vein of nestlings and banded them with unique combinations of metal bands, color bands, and patagial tags on days 24–30 after hatching. DNA was extracted from samples using DNeasy tissue kits (Qiagen, Valencia, CA) following the manufacturer’s protocol. All fieldwork with American crows was carried out under protocols approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees of Binghamton University (no. 537-03 and 607-07) and Cornell University (no. 1988–0210). The pre-WNV dataset included samples collected between 1990 and 2002. The 2002 nestlings were sampled prior to WNV emergence, as nestlings fledge the nest between May and July, whereas WNV mortality typically occurs between August and October in this crow population. The post-WNV samples were collected between 2005 and 2011. Samples collected immediately after WNV emergence (2003 and 2004) were not included in the analysis to allow time for the birds to respond to the population loss. We maximized independence of the birds selected for analysis by including only one randomly chosen offspring per brood and no more than two broods per family group in the pre-and post-WNV samples, with each brood per family group separated by the maximum number of years possible within the pre- or post-WNV sampling periods (1990–2002 pre-WNV; 2005–2011 post-WNV; Figure S1). Birds were randomly and independently selected (with replacement) for the SNP and microsatellite analyses; therefore, there was little overlap among individual birds included in these marker sets. Of the 286 individual birds included in this analysis, 22 were common to both marker sets (15 pre-WNV; 7 post-WNV). The 20-year time period of this study may have encompassed 2–4 breeding cohorts (approximately 1–2 pre- and 1–2 post-WNV, with a sharp turn-over immediately after WNV emergence). Crows can produce offspring as early as two years after hatching, but most do not begin breeding independently until at least 3–4 years after hatching. Breeding initiation is limited at least in part by breeding vacancies, which are created by the death of one or both members of an established breeding pair. Such breeding vacancies likely increased in availability after the emergence of WNV. Microsatellite genotyping. A total of 222 crows (n = 113 and 109 crows pre- and post-WNV, respectively) were genotyped at 34 polymorphic microsatellite loci that were optimized for American crows. Alleles were scored using the microsatellite plugin for Geneious 9.1.8. We used GenePop version 4.7 to test for linkage disequilibrium between all pairs of loci, departures from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), and null allele frequency. Locus characteristics (e.g., alleles/ locus, tests of Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and null allele frequencies) are given in the supplementary materials (Table S1). Departures from HWE expectations were observed at two loci (PnuA3w from the pre-WNV sample and Cb06 from the post-WNV sample) after Bonferroni correction (Table S1); these loci were removed from subsequent analysis. In 561 pairwise comparisons, four pairs of loci appeared to be in linkage disequilibrium (Cb20 and Cb21; Cb14 and CoBr36; CoBr22 and Cb17, and CoBr12 and Cb10), but this linkage was only apparent at both time points (the pre-WNV and post-WNV populations) for Cb20 and Cb21. We removed both Cb20 and Cb21 from the analysis but retained the other loci because apparent linkage at only a single time point was unlikely to be a result of physical linkage. Two additional loci (Cb17 and Cb10) had a high frequency of null alleles (> 0.1) and were removed from the dataset. All subsequent analyses are therefore based on 28 loci. We scored all birds at a minimum of 26 of these 28 loci, and most (>98%) were scored at all loci (mean proportion of loci typed >0.99). Mean allelic diversity at these loci was 11.25 ± 1.17 alleles/locus (range: 3–31 alleles/locus). Double Digest Restriction Associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing. We performed ddRAD sequencing on 86 randomly selected crows (43 pre-WNV and 43 post-WNV). 100-500 ng of DNA were digested with SbfI-HF (NEB, R3642L) and MspI-HF (NEB, R016S) restriction enzymes. Samples were ligated with a P2-MspI adapter and pooled in groups of 18-20, each with a unique P1 adapter. Pooled index groups were purified using 1.5X volumes of homemade MagNA made with Sera-Mag Magnetic Speed-beads (FisherSci). Fragments 450-600 bp long were selected using BluePippin (Sage Science) by the Cornell University Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC). After size selection, unique index barcodes were added to each index group by performing 11 cycles of PCR with Phusion® DNA polymerase (NEB). Reactions were purified using 0.7X volumes of MagNA beads and pooled in equimolar ratios for sequencing on the Illumina HiSeq 2500 at the BRC, with single end reads (100 bp). The sequencing was performed with an added Illumina PhiX control (15%) due to low 5’ complexity. Pre- and post-WNV samples were library prepared together and sequenced on a single lane to avoid the introduction of a library or lane effect. We used FASTQC v0.11.9 (Babraham Bioinformatics; http://www.bioinformatics.babraham.ac.uk/projects/fastqc/) to assess read quality. We trimmed reads to 147 bp using fastX_trimmer (FASTX-Toolkit) to exclude low-quality data at the 3’ end of reads. Next, we eliminated reads with Phred scores below 10, then eliminated reads in which 5% or more bases had Phred scores below 20 (fastq_quality_filter). The fastq files were demultiplexed using the process_radtags module in STACKS v2.52 pipeline to create a file with sequences specific to each individual. We first scaffolded the American Crow reference genome (NCBI assembly: ASM69197v1, Accession no: GCA_000691975.1) into putative pseudochromosomes using the synteny-based Chromosemble tool in Satsuma2 (Grabherr et al. 2010) and the Hooded Crow genome (NCBI assembly: ASM73873v5, Accession no: GCA_000738735.5). We aligned sequence reads to the American Crow pseudochromosome assembly using BWA-MEM (Li & Durbin 2009). We called SNPs in ANGSD (Korneliussen et al. 2014) using the GATK model, requiring SNPs to be present in 80% of the individuals (0.95 postcutoff, SNP p-value 1e-6) with a minimum allele frequency of 0.015. We removed bases with quality scores below 20 (-minQ 20), bad reads (-remove_bads), mapping quality below 20 (-minMapQ20), base alignment quality below 1 (-baq), more than two alleles (-skipTriallelic), and heterozygote bias (-hetbias_pval 1e-5), requiring the minimum depth per individual to be at least two and read depth higher than 1,800. These filters resulted in 16,200 SNPs. To reduce differences in missingness between the pre- and post-WNV populations, we excluded loci that had less than 80% called genotypes per population, resulting in 5,151 SNPs.

TwitterEvaluating population-level responses to conservation action following large-scale disturbance can improve the efficacy of future habitat conservation measures. In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy storm surges cleared vegetation and opened inlets through the barrier islands, Fire Island and Westhampton Island, New York, creating Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) habitat. Storm effects prompted an island-wide stabilization project, which had the potential to negatively affect novel Piping Plover habitat. Certain sections of Fire Island were designed to create and/or improve habitat (hereafter, restoration areas) to mitigate possible habitat loss or degradation. Since Piping Plovers in New York appear to be habitat-limited, we anticipated positive population growth following habitat creation. From 2013–2018, we captured and banded 152 adults and 353 chicks, and monitored 279 nests and 160 broods. Immigrant communities have been an indispensable element of United States metropolitan life, often playing the role of a way station on a long journey of assimilation. Reflecting this, a linear spatial assimilation theory asserts that immigrants settle initially in a segregated urban ethnic enclave and disperse as they achieve economic, social, and cultural assimilation. The growth of suburban immigrant communities over the last couple of decades, however, challenges this traditional notion; suburban residency is no longer the final stage of assimilation. For many new immigrants, suburbia has become the first stop rather than an eventual destination. Furthermore, transitory immigrant communities are not necessarily located in urban areas. Dispersed immigrant's practical needs can now be met by suburban ethnic enclaves. This points to spatial assimilation without the attenuation of ties to ethnic businesses, jobs, shopping malls, churches, and social service facilities. The study examines this spatial dispersion without diminishing ethnic ties, that is, without ethnic attenuation. More specifically, it compares Korean households at varying degrees of spatial dispersion (i.e., concentrated, dispersed, and highly dispersed) and their corresponding job, consumption, religious, and social linkages to ethnic enclaves both in the suburbs and the central city. To do so, the study focused on the current ethnic linkages of dispersed Korean suburban immigrant households in Bergen County, New Jersey. Korean immigrants are a highly suburbanized group and are generally considered a challenge to the traditional spatial assimilation model. They, however, have not been extensively researched in this context. In addition, Bergen County, NJ is the largest and fastest growing suburban settlement of Korean immigrants in the New York metropolitan area. As such, it offers an unusual opportunity to examine the simultaneous occurrence of spatial dispersion and ethnic concentration. Methodologically, the study consisted of two tasks. The first task investigated how and why Bergen County's Korean households are spatially dispersed based on 1980, 1990, and 2000 aggregate Census data and 1990 and 2000 Public-Use Microdata Sample Data. The second task examined why and to what extent Korean households in the suburbs are linked to ethnic centers. This information was collected from a telephone survey of Korean households in Bergen County in 2004.

Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois rounded out the top five states for Hispanic residents in that year. History of Hispanic people Hispanic people are those whose heritage stems from a former Spanish colony. The Spanish Empire colonized most of Central and Latin America in the 15th century, which began when Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492. The Spanish Empire expanded its territory throughout Central America and South America, but the colonization of the United States did not include the Northeastern part of the United States. Despite the number of Hispanic people living in the United States having increased, the median income of Hispanic households has fluctuated slightly since 1990. Hispanic population in the United States Hispanic people are the second-largest ethnic group in the United States, making Spanish the second most common language spoken in the country. In 2021, about one-fifth of Hispanic households in the United States made between 50,000 to 74,999 U.S. dollars. The unemployment rate of Hispanic Americans has fluctuated significantly since 1990, but has been on the decline since 2010, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The study analyzes the forces leading to or impeding the assimilation of 18- to 32-year-olds from immigrant backgrounds that vary in terms of race, language, and the mix of skills and liabilities their parents brought to the United States. To make sure that what we find derives specifically from growing up in an immigrant family, rather than simply being a young person in New York, a comparison group of people from native born White, Black, and Puerto Rican backgrounds was also studied. The sample was drawn from New York City (except for Staten Island) and the surrounding counties in the inner part of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region where the vast majority of immigrants and native born minority group members live and grow up. The study groups make possible a number of interesting comparisons. Unlike many other immigrant groups, the West Indian first generation speaks English, but the dominant society racially classifies them as Black. The study explored how their experiences resemble or differ from native born African Americans. Dominicans and the Colombian-Peruvian-Ecuadoran population both speak Spanish, but live in different parts of New York, have different class backgrounds prior to immigration, and, quite often, different skin tones. The study compared them to Puerto Rican young people, who, along with their parents, have the benefit of citizenship. Chinese immigrants from the mainland tend to have little education, while young people with overseas Chinese parents come from families with higher incomes, more education, and more English fluency. Respondents were divided into eight groups depending on their parents' origin. Those of immigrant ancestry include: Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union; Chinese immigrants from the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese Diaspora; immigrants from the Dominican Republic; immigrants from the English-speaking countries of the West Indies (including Guyana but excluding Haiti and those of Indian origin); and immigrants from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. These groups composed 44 percent of the 2000 second-generation population in the defined sample area. For comparative purposes, Whites, Blacks, and Puerto Ricans who were born in the United States and whose parents were born in the United States or Puerto Rico were also interviewed. To be eligible, a respondent had to have a parent from one of these groups. If the respondent was eligible for two groups, he or she was asked which designation he or she preferred. The ability to compare these groups with native born Whites, Blacks, and Puerto Ricans permits researchers to investigate the effects of nativity while controlling for race and language background. About two-thirds of second-generation respondents were born in the United States, mostly in New York City, while one-third were born abroad but arrived in the United States by age 12 and had lived in the country for at least 10 years, except for those from the former Soviet Union, some of whom arrived past the age of 12. The project began with a pilot study in July 1996. Survey data collection took place between November 1999 and December 1999. The study includes demographic variables such as race, ethnicity, language, age, education, income, family size, country of origin, and citizenship status.
