    NZ Parcel Boundaries Wireframe provides a map of land, road and other parcel boundaries, and is especially useful for displaying property boundaries.
    This map service is for visualisation purposes only and is not intended for download. You can download the full parcels data from the NZ Parcels dataset.
    This map service provides a dark outline and transparent fill, making it perfect for overlaying on our basemaps or any map service you choose.
    Data for this map service is sourced from the NZ Parcels dataset which is updated weekly with authoritative data direct from LINZ’s Survey and Title system. Refer to the NZ Parcel layer for detailed metadata.
    To simplify the visualisation of this data, the map service filters the data from the NZ Parcels layer to display parcels with a status of 'current' only.
    This map service has been designed to be integrated into GIS, web and mobile applications via LINZ’s WMTS and XYZ tile services. View the Services tab to access these services.

    NZ Addresses is the national authoritative dataset for physical addresses in New Zealand.

    This dataset contains the street number, street name and suburb of an address, as well as a unique ID and Territorial Authority.

    Refer to the NZ Addresses Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

    Please note this dataset replaced NZ Street Address in January 2023.

    Background

    This dataset provides all allocated addresses as advised to Toitū Te Whenua LINZ by Territorial Authorities (TAs). Under the Local Government Act 1974 (section 319) it is the responsibility of the TAs to advise the Surveyor-General at Toitū Te Whenua LINZ of all allocated addresses in their district.

    Address data is maintained by Toitū Te Whenua LINZ in the Address Information Management System (AIMS) and Comprehensive Address Data Store (CADS), which are centralised databases for the management of national addresses, including for electoral purposes. This dataset is updated weekly on the LINZ Data Service.

    Description

    A dataset describing exposed bedrock and surficial geology of Antarctica constructed by the GeoMAP Action Group of SCAR (The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and GNS Science, New Zealand. Legacy geological map data have been captured into a geographic information system (GIS), refining its spatial reliability, harmonising classification, then improving representation of glacial sequences and geomorphology. A total 99,080 polygons have been unified for depicting geology at 1:250,000 scale, but locally there are some areas with higher spatial precision. Geological definition in GeoMAP v.2022-08 is founded on a mixed chronostratigraphic- and lithostratigraphic-based classification. Description of rock and moraine polygons employs international GeoSciML data protocols to provide attribute-rich and queriable data; including bibliographic links to 589 source maps and scientific literature. Data are provided under CC-BY License as zipped ArcGIS geodatabase, QGIS geopackage or GoogleEarth kmz files. GeoMAP is the first detailed geological dataset covering all of Antarctica. GeoMAP depicts 'known geology' of rock exposures rather than 'interpreted' sub-ice features and is suitable for continent-wide perspectives and cross-discipline interrogation.

    This map presents transportation data, including highways, roads, railroads, and airports for the world.

    The map was developed by Esri using Esri highway data; Garmin basemap layers; HERE street data for North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Central America, India, most of the Middle East and Asia, and select countries in Africa. Data for Pacific Island nations and the remaining countries of Africa was sourced from OpenStreetMap contributors. Specific country list and documentation of Esri's process for including OSM data is available to view.

    You can add this layer on top of any imagery, such as the Esri World Imagery map service, to provide a useful reference overlay that also includes street labels at the largest scales. (At the largest scales, the line symbols representing the streets and roads are automatically hidden and only the labels showing the names of streets and roads are shown). Imagery With Labels basemap in the basemap dropdown in the ArcGIS web and mobile clients does not include this World Transportation map. If you use the Imagery With Labels basemap in your map and you want to have road and street names, simply add this World Transportation layer into your map. It is designed to be drawn underneath the labels in the Imagery With Labels basemap, and that is how it will be drawn if you manually add it into your web map.

    This dataset provides a seamless cloud-free 10m resolution satellite imagery layer of the New Zealand mainland and offshore islands.

    The imagery was captured by the European Space Agency Sentinel-2 satellites between September 2023 - April 2024.

    Data comprises: • 450 ortho-rectified RGB GeoTIFF images in NZTM projection, tiled into the LINZ Standard 1:50000 tile layout. • Satellite sensors: ESA Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B • Acquisition dates: September 2023 - April 2024 • Spectral resolution: R, G, B • Spatial resolution: 10 meters • Radiometric resolution: 8-bits (downsampled from 12-bits)

    This is a visual product only. The data has been downsampled from 12-bits to 8-bits, and the original values of the images have been modified for visualisation purposes.

    Description

    NZDEM_SoS_v1.0 is a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) covering the whole of New Zealand at a spatial resolution of 15m, created by the School of Surveying by interpolating LINZ topographic vector data.

    The DEM was created as a series of 30 maps which extent correspond exactly with the LINZ Topo250 topographic map series. Smaller regions can thus be obtained individually but also fit together seamlessly to create a full countrywide DEM.

    The accuracy of this product was comprehensively assessed using a statistically sound selection of 3791 check points throughout the country. The comparison of results with other available country-wide DEM demonstrate an improvement of NZDEM_SoS_v1.0 in terms of quality that comes in addition with a finer spatial resolution.

    Description

    This provides a polygon coastline and islands layer which is based on the Topo50 products. It is a combination of the following layers:

    This topographic coastline is the line forming the boundary between the land and sea, defined by mean high water.

    Islands from the NZ Island Polygons layer that lie within the NZ Coastline and Chatham Islands areas (i.e. islands in lakes, rivers and estuaries) have been removed.

    The GIS workflow to create the layer is:

    1. NZ Coastlines were converted from a polyline to a polygon using a polyline to polygon tool.
    2. The resulting coastal polygon was then used as an input into an erase tool and run against the NZ Island Polygon layer to remove all islands lying within the NZ Mainland and Stewart Island.
    3. This was then merged with the NZ Chatham Is island polygons (Topo, 1:50k) that have had the islands within the main island polygon removed, NZ Auckland Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:50k), NZ Campbell Is / Motu Ihupuku Island, NZ Antipodes Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k), NZ Kermadec Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k), NZ Bounty Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k) and NZ Snares Is / Tini Heke Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k) layers using a merge tool.

    The New Zealand Land Cover Database (LCDB) is a multi-temporal, thematic classification of New Zealand's land cover. It identifies 33 mainland land cover classes (35 classes once the offshore Chatham Islands are included). The classification was revised between versions 1, 2, and 3 but has been consistent thereafter, and always with backward compatibility maintained. Land cover features are described by a polygon boundary, a land cover code, and a land cover name at each nominal time step; summer 1996/97, summer 2001/02, summer 2008/09, summer 2012/13, and summer 2018/19. The data set is designed to complement in theme, scale and accuracy, New Zealand’s 1:50,000 topographic database (https://www.linz.govt.nz/land/maps/topographic-maps/topo50-maps). LCDB is suitable for use in national and regional environment monitoring, forest and shrubland inventory, biodiversity assessment, trend analysis and infrastructure planning. The classification used in LCDBv5.0 is presented in the document 'LCDBClassesAtVersion5.pdf' and a table correlating LCDB classes over all versions is presented in the document 'LCDBClassCorrelations.pdf'. Both of these are among the accessory documents to this dataset in the LRIS portal (https://lris.scinfo.org.nz/). LCDB version 5.0 was released in January 2020 and includes corrections to all time steps1997/97, 2001/02, 2008/09, 2012/13 and 2018/19 for both the New Zealand mainland and Chatham Islands. A description of work undertaken for this release (including that of all earlier releases) is presented in the Lineage section. Of particular note at version 5.0 is the addition to LCDB, of attributes designed to readily identify and monitor wetlands over time and a similar capability to manage significant coastal changes. “EditAuthority” and "EditDate" are attributes, maintained since version 3.0 to indicate authorship and nominal date of polygon mapping, edit or change. Errors in the data due to misclassification (rather than land cover change) or poor delineation can be reported to Landcare Research for inclusion in the next release using the online feedback facility in https://lris.scinfo.org.nz/.

    Culminating more than four years of processing data, NASA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) have completed Earth's most extensive global topographic map. The mission is a collaboration among NASA, NGA, and the German and Italian space agencies. For 11 days in February 2000, the space shuttle Endeavour conducted the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) using C-Band and X-Band interferometric synthetic aperture radars to acquire topographic data over 80% of the Earth's land mass, creating the first-ever near-global data set of land elevations. This data was used to produce topographic maps (digital elevation maps) 30 times as precise as the best global maps used today. The SRTM system gathered data at the rate of 40,000 per minute over land. They reveal for the first time large, detailed swaths of Earth's topography previously obscured by persistent cloudiness. The data will benefit scientists, engineers, government agencies and the public with an ever-growing array of uses. The SRTM radar system mapped Earth from 56 degrees south to 60 degrees north of the equator. The resolution of the publicly available data is three arc-seconds (1/1,200th of a degree of latitude and longitude, about 295 feet, at Earth's equator). The final data release covers Australia and New Zealand in unprecedented uniform detail. It also covers more than 1,000 islands comprising much of Polynesia and Melanesia in the South Pacific, as well as islands in the South Indian and Atlantic oceans. SRTM data are being used for applications ranging from land use planning to "virtual" Earth exploration. Currently, the mission's homepage "http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm" provides direct access to recently obtained earth images. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission C-band data for North America and South America are available to the public. A list of complete public data set is available at "http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/dataprod.htm" The data specifications are within the following parameters: 30-meter X 30-meter spatial sampling with 16 meter absolute vertical height accuracy, 10-meter relative vertical height accuracy, and 20-meter absolute horizontal circular accuracy.     The SRTM radar contained two types of antenna panels, C-band and X-band. The near-global topographic maps of Earth called Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are made from the C-band radar data. These data were processed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and are being distributed through the United States Geological Survey's EROS Data Center. Data from the X-band radar are used to create slightly higher resolution DEMs but without the global coverage of the C-band radar. The SRTM X-band radar data are being processed and distributed by the German Aerospace Center, DLR.

    Description

    Mineral resource occurrence data covering the world, most thoroughly within the U.S. This database contains the records previously provided in the Mineral Resource Data System (MRDS) of USGS and the Mineral Availability System/Mineral Industry Locator System (MAS/MILS) originated in the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which is now part of USGS. The MRDS is a large and complex relational database developed over several decades by hundreds of researchers and reporters. While database records describe mineral resources worldwide, the compilation of information was intended to cover the United States completely, and its coverage of resources in other countries is incomplete. The content of MRDS records was drawn from reports previously published or made available to USGS researchers. Some of those original source materials are no longer available. The information contained in MRDS was intended to reflect the reports used as sources and is current only as of the date of those source reports. Consequently MRDS does not reflect up-to-date changes to the operating status of mines, ownership, land status, production figures and estimates of reserves and resources, or the nature, size, and extent of workings. Information on the geological characteristics of the mineral resource are likely to remain correct, but aspects involving human activity are likely to be out of date.

    Description

    NZSoSDEM v1.0 is a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) covering the whole of New Zealand at a spatial resolution of 15m, created by the School of Surveying by interpolating LINZ topographic vector data.

    The DEM was created as a series of 30 maps which extent correspond exactly with the LINZ Topo250 topographic map series. Smaller regions can thus be obtained individually but also fit together seamlessly to create a full countrywide DEM.

    The accuracy of this product was comprehensively assessed using a statistically sound selection of 3791 check points throughout the country. The comparison of results with other available country-wide DEM demonstrate an improvement of NZDEM_SoS_v1.0 in terms of quality that comes in addition with a finer spatial resolution.

    This 8m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was originally created by Geographx (geographx.co.nz) and was primarily derived from January 2012 LINZ Topo50 20m contours (data.linz.govt.nz/layer/768).

    Suitable for cartographic visualisation only. It was created by the interpolation of 20m contours with post-processing and filtering it is not suitable for terrain analysis.

    Spatial accuracy is nominally the same as for the LINZ source data: 90% of well-defined points are within ±22 metres horizontally and within ±10 metres vertically.

    This dataset is the definitive of the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 1 January 2023 as defined by Stats NZ (the custodian), clipped to the coastline. This clipped version has been created for cartographic purposes and so does not fully represent the official full extent boundaries. This version contains 57,539 meshblocks.

    Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock pattern for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time.

    A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is a defined geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. The optimal size for a meshblock is 30–60 dwellings (containing approximately 60–120 residents).

    Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone (EEZ) and is digitised to the 12-mile (19.3km) limit. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), statistical area 3 (SA3), and urban rural (UR). They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

    Meshblock boundaries generally follow road centrelines, cadastral property boundaries, or topographical features such as rivers. Expanses of water in the form of lakes and inlets are defined separately from land.

    Meshblock maintenance

    Meshblock boundaries are amended by:

    1. Splitting – subdividing a meshblock into two or more meshblocks.
    2. Nudging – shifting a boundary to a more appropriate position.

    Reasons for meshblock splits and nudges can include:

    ·to maintain meshblock criteria rules.

    ·to improve the size balance of meshblocks in areas where there has been population growth

    ·to maintain alignment to cadastre and other geographic features.

    ·Stats NZ requests for boundary changes so that statistical geography boundaries can be moved

    ·external requests for boundary changes so that administrative or electoral boundaries can be moved

    ·to separate land and water. Mainland, inland water, islands, inlets, and oceanic are defined separately

    Meshblock changes are made throughout the year. A major release is made at 1 January each year with ad hoc releases available to users at other times.

    While meshblock boundaries are continually under review, 'freezes' on changes to the boundaries are applied periodically. Such 'freezes' are imposed at the time of population censuses and during periods of intense electoral activity, for example, prior and during general and local body elections.

    Meshblock numbering

    Meshblocks are not named and have seven-digit codes.

    When meshblocks are split, each new meshblock is given a new code. The original meshblock codes no longer exist within that version and future versions of the meshblock classification. Meshblock codes do not change when a meshblock boundary is nudged.

    Meshblocks that existed prior to 2015 and have not changed are numbered from 0000100 to 3210003. Meshblocks created from 2015 onwards are numbered from 4000000.

    Digitised and non-digitised meshblocks

    The digital geographic boundaries are defined and maintained by Stats NZ.

    Meshblocks cover the land area of New Zealand, the water area to the 12mile limit, the Chatham Islands, Kermadec Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, offshore oil rigs, and Ross Dependency. The following 16 meshblocks are not held in digitised form.

    Description

    This wetlands dataset has its origins in the Wetlands of National Importance (WONI) project, which was part of the Sustainable Development Programme of Actions for Freshwaters which had the goal of identifying a list of water bodies that would protect a full range of freshwater biodiversity.
    The pre-human extent of wetlands was produced using soil information from the New Zealand Land Resource Inventory (NZLRI) and a 15m digital elevation model (DEM) to refine soil boundaries. Current wetlands were defined by combining existing databases including LCDB2 (Land Cover Database version 2), NZMS 260 Topomaps, existing surveys from Regional Councils, Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) covenant wetland polygons, DOC surveys (WERI database), and the 15m DEM, to define a single set of wetland polygons and centre points. All this data was checked against a standardised set of Landsat imagery using the Ecosat technology and where necessary new wetland boundaries delineated.

    Wetlands were classified into 7 groups at the hydro-class level using fuzzy expert rules.

    This layer shows the location of active faults mapped as part of a project to define Fault Awareness Areas in Taupō District.Fault Awareness Areas show areas where there may be a surface fault rupture hazard. Surface fault rupture is the permanent breaking, ripping, buckling or warping of the ground on or near the line where a fault meets the ground surface, as a result of movement on the fault. It is different from earthquake shaking.This file contains Fault Awareness Areas for active faults outside of TaupōDistrict Council LiDAR areas in the TaupōDistrict (Litchfield et al. 2020). The faults were mapped using Bay of Plenty LiDAR data, the NZ Active Faults Database, and previous detailed fault mapping (G. Leonard and D. Townsend unpublished; P. Villamor unpublished data).This dataset has been created as recommended in Barrell et al. (2015) "Guidelines for using regional-scale earthquake fault information in Canterbury". This map service provides a dark outline and transparent fill, making it perfect for overlaying on our basemaps or any map service you choose.
Data for this map service is sourced from the NZ Parcels dataset which is updated weekly with authoritative data direct from LINZ’s Survey and Title system. Refer to the NZ Parcel layer for detailed metadata.
To simplify the visualisation of this data, the map service filters the data from the NZ Parcels layer to display parcels with a status of 'current' only.
