The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index dropped around 8,000 points in the four weeks from February 12 to March 11, 2020, but has since recovered and peaked at 44,910.65 points as of November 24, 2024. In February 2020 - just prior to the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the DJIA index stood at a little over 29,000 points. U.S. markets suffer as virus spreads The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a turbulent period for stock markets – the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also recorded dramatic drops. At the start of February, some analysts remained optimistic that the outbreak would ease. However, the increased spread of the virus started to hit investor confidence, prompting a record plunge in the stock markets. The Dow dropped by more than 3,500 points in the week from February 21 to February 28, which was a fall of 12.4 percent – its worst percentage loss in a week since October 2008. Stock markets offer valuable economic insights The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a stock market index that monitors the share prices of the 30 largest companies in the United States. By studying the performance of the listed companies, analysts can gauge the strength of the domestic economy. If investors are confident in a company’s future, they will buy its stocks. The uncertainty of the coronavirus sparked fears of an economic crisis, and many traders decided that investment during the pandemic was too risky.

    Description

Throughout the 1920s, prices on the U.S. stock exchange rose exponentially, however, by the end of the decade, uncontrolled growth and a stock market propped up by speculation and borrowed money proved unsustainable, resulting in the Wall Street Crash of October 1929. This set a chain of events in motion that led to economic collapse - banks demanded repayment of debts, the property market crashed, and people stopped spending as unemployment rose. Within a year the country was in the midst of an economic depression, and the economy continued on a downward trend until late-1932.

It was during this time where Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was elected president, and he assumed office in March 1933 - through a series of economic reforms and New Deal policies, the economy began to recover. Stock prices fluctuated at more sustainable levels over the next decades, and developments were in line with overall economic development, rather than the uncontrolled growth seen in the 1920s. Overall, it took over 25 years for the Dow Jones value to reach its pre-Crash peak.

    Description

It is estimated that the cumulative market cap of cryptocurrencies increased in early 2023 after the downfall in November 2022 due to FTX. That value declined in the summer of 2023, however, as international uncertainty grew over a potential recession. Bitcoin's market cap made up the majority of the overall market capitalization.

    What is market cap?

Market capitalization is a financial measure typically used for publicly traded firms, computed by multiplying the share price by the number of outstanding shares. However, cryptocurrency analysts calculate it as the price of the virtual currencies times the number of coins in the market. This gives cryptocurrency investors an idea of the overall market size, and watching the evolution of the measure tells how much money is flowing in or out of each cryptocurrency.

    Cryptocurrency as an investment

The price of Bitcoin has been erratic, and most other cryptocurrencies follow its larger price swings. This volatility attracts investors who hope to buy when the price is low and sell at its peak, turning a profit. However, this does little for price stability. As such, few firms accept payment in cryptocurrencies.

    Description

Over the past five years, rising disposable income and a temporary spike in the marriage rate didn’t do much to support demand for event planners, as most consumers and businesses lost their footing following a period of economic volatility. When social distancing guidelines eased, party and event planners experienced a moderate surge as clients who postponed their events during the pandemic were eager to celebrate. This temporary advancement was not enough for party planners to significantly recover, with revenue rising at a CAGR of just 0.1% over the past five years. Revenue will total $6.8 billion in 2024, when it will contract 0.8%. Many businesses shifted to remote work and as office rental vacancies remained high, party and event planners saw less business from corporate clients. Inflationary pressures and falling consumer confidence disincentivized businesses from seeking party and event planners’ services, encouraging them to focus on essential purchases and cutting discretionary spending. Despite facing headwinds, party and event planners enjoyed mild profit growth because of the surge in marriages in 2021 and 2022, as pent-up demand following the lifting of social distancing measures spurred renewed demand.Over the next five years, party and event planners will undergo modest growth. Rising disposable income and higher corporate profit than the current period will support party planners. Still, a plummeting marriage rate and a preference for DIY will continue to limit revenue and profit growth. Barriers to entry will remain low as virtual event planning services remain popular, allowing new planners to enter and intensify internal competition. Industry revenue is expected to expand at a CAGR of 0.7% to $7.1 billion through the end of 2029.

    Description

The ChFinAnn dataset is a publicly available financial event dataset that includes five types of financial events: Equity Freeze, Equity Pledge, Equity Repurchase, Equity Overweight, and Equity Underweight. This dataset consists of 32040 samples and 48000 event records, of which approximately 29% of the documents contain more than one record. In addition, 98% of the records have arguments scattered across different sentences, which poses additional challenges for event extraction. This dataset was built to support document level event extraction asks, particularly in the financial field. It is not only large in scale, but also has the characteristics of multi event recording and argument dispersion, which make it a valuable resource for researching document level event extraction.

    Description

The Long Depression was, by a large margin, the longest-lasting recession in U.S. history. It began in the U.S. with the Panic of 1873, and lasted for over five years. This depression was the largest in a series of recessions at the turn of the 20th century, which proved to be a period of overall stagnation as the U.S. financial markets failed to keep pace with industrialization and changes in monetary policy. Great Depression The Great Depression, however, is widely considered to have been the most severe recession in U.S. history. Following the Wall Street Crash in 1929, the country's economy collapsed, wages fell and a quarter of the workforce was unemployed. It would take almost four years for recovery to begin. Additionally, U.S. expansion and integration in international markets allowed the depression to become a global event, which became a major catalyst in the build up to the Second World War. Decreasing severity When comparing recessions before and after the Great Depression, they have generally become shorter and less frequent over time. Only three recessions in the latter period have lasted more than one year. Additionally, while there were 12 recessions between 1880 and 1920, there were only six recessions between 1980 and 2020. The most severe recession in recent years was the financial crisis of 2007 (known as the Great Recession), where irresponsible lending policies and lack of government regulation allowed for a property bubble to develop and become detached from the economy over time, this eventually became untenable and the bubble burst. Although the causes of both the Great Depression and Great Recession were similar in many aspects, economists have been able to use historical evidence to try and predict, prevent, or limit the impact of future recessions.

    Description

The data provided here as part of the DEBS 2022 Grand Challenge is based on real tick data captured by Infront Financial Technology GmbH for the complete week of November 8th to 14th, 2021 (i.e., five trading days Monday to Friday + Saturday and Sunday). The data set contains 289 million tick data events covering 5504 equities and indices that are traded on three European exchanges: Paris (FR), Amsterdam (NL), and Frankfurt (ETR).

Some event notifications appear to come with no payload. This is due to the fact that the 2022 GC requires only a small subset of attributes to be evaluated; other attributes have been eliminated from the data set to minimize its overall size while keeping the amount of events to process unchanged.

Further details on the data set, its syntax and its semantics can be found in the official DEBS 2022 Grand Challenge paper as part of the DEBS 2022 conference proceedings (please use this for citation):
