The Health Survey for England (HSE) monitors trends in the nation’s health and care. It provides information about adults aged 16 and over, and children aged 0 to 15, living in private households in England. The survey consists of an interview, followed by a visit from a nurse who takes some measurements and blood and saliva samples. Adults and children aged 13 to 15 were interviewed in person, and parents of children aged 0 to 12 answered on behalf of their children for many topics. Children aged 8 to 15 filled in a self-completion booklet about their drinking and smoking behaviour. A total of 8,178 adults (aged 16 and over) and 2,072 children (aged 0 to 15) were interviewed in the 2018 survey. 4,825 adults and 1,103 children had a nurse visit. Each survey in the series includes core questions, and measurements such as blood pressure, height and weight measurements and analysis of blood and saliva samples. In addition there are modules of questions on specific topics that vary from year to year. These are the results from the 2018/19 Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC), a mandatory collection for all NHS trusts including Ambulance trusts. It comprises information relating to the costs of providing and maintaining the NHS Estate including buildings, maintaining and equipping hospitals, the provision of services e.g. laundry and food, and the costs and consumption of utilities. As part of our analysis of the 2018/19 data, an enhanced data quality assurance exercise was conducted in conjunction with NHS England/Improvement (the collection sponsors). Both organisations worked closely with trusts to clarify requirements and support accurate reporting. A compiled list of trust provided comments and responses is included in this release . Data users should note that several data fields are currently labelled as unreliable due to having changed definition since the previous reporting period, or due to being introduced relatively recently. Please see the introduction and data quality worksheets for more information.

No patient identifiable information has been collected or is included in this release. NHS Digital publishes this information to support winter preparedness and provide information about some activity within primary care. The publication covers historic appointments, marked as attended or did not attend, from national to CCG coverage. The aim is to inform users, who range from a healthcare professional to an inquiring citizen, about appointments within primary care. NHS Digital produce this information monthly, containing information about the most recent month and the previous 12 months. The aim of the publication is to inform users about activity and usage of GP appointments historically and how primary care is impacted by seasonal pressures, such as winter. The publication includes data from participating practices using EMIS and TPP GP systems. The publication includes important information, however it does not show the totality of GP activity/workload. The data presented only contains information which was captured on the GP practice systems. This limits the activity reported on and does not represent all work happening within a primary care setting or assess the complexity of activity. Note: The Comparing GP Appointment Data to QResearch Data document was replaced on 07/12/2018 to correct an error with dates in the comparison tables.

This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2018-19, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2019. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. The number of deliveries recorded in the MSDS is 91 per cent of the number of deliveries recorded in HES, so the partial coverage of the MSDS both geographically and over time means that figures from the MSDS should not be interpreted as England level figures for 2018-19. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with breakdowns including the baby's first feed type and the smoking status of women in early pregnancy. For the first time, this publication contains information about the mother’s weekly alcohol intake at booking appointment and folic acid use from the MSDS. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This document will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England. A slight correction has been made to the rates table in tab TC1819 of the HES Provider Analysis file which now derives the correct totals excluding the unknowns. These are the denominators for the respective rates in the table so all the rates have been updated.

This statistical report presents a range of information on drug use by adults and children drawn together from a variety of sources. It focuses on England only where possible although some statistics are only readily available at GB or UK level or for England and Wales combined. Some of this is new information whilst some has been published previously. More detail can be found in the source publications which contain a wider range of data and analysis.

This is a publication on Accident and Emergency (A&E) activity in English NHS hospitals and English NHS-commissioned activity in the independent sector. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2019. It contains final data and replaces the provisional data that are published each month. This is a joint publication between NHS Digital and NHS England. This collaboration enables data to be brought together from two different sources enabling inclusion of a wider set of breakdowns and measures and a more complete picture to be presented. The data sources for this publication are Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and A&E Attendances and Emergency Admissions Monthly Situation Reports (MSitAE). This publication releases some high level analyses of both HES and MSitAE data relating to A&E attendances in NHS hospitals, minor injury units and walk-in centres. It includes analysis by patient demographics, time spent in A&E, distributions by time of arrival and day of week, arriving by ambulance, performance times, waits for admission and re-attendances to A&E within 7 days. The following additional analyses are also included in this report: • Comparison of 4 hour and 12 hour waits between the four home nations, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales • A&E attendances by Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) • A&E attendances by ethnicity Additional exploratory analyses have also been included as part of this release that seek to review reported data quality to inform future uses of the data.

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) is part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP) which is commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and funded by NHS England. The NDA is managed by NHS Digital in partnership with Diabetes UK. The NDA measures the effectiveness of diabetes healthcare against NICE Clinical Guidelines and NICE Quality Standards, in England and Wales. The NDA collects and analyses data for use by a range of stakeholders to drive changes and improvements in the quality of services and health outcomes for people with diabetes. This report details the findings and recommendations relating to diabetes care process completion, treatment target achievement and structured education for the 2018-19 audit. The audit collected data during May and June 2019, for the period 01 January 2018 to 31 March 2019. This report follows the NDA short report publication in December 2019, which provided the top level findings for the 2018-19 audit, along with local level data made available to services in a timely manner that can help drive improvements in the quality of diabetes care locally. A new method of collecting structured education attendance data was trialled for 2018-19. In addition to extracting education data from GP practice systems, structured education providers could submit data directly via the Clinical Audit Platform (CAP). Around 20 providers submitted, however only a small proportion of records were submitted with the required data. This exercise has shown the potential value of this additional collection and improvements to the process are being developed to improve future collections. Included within this publication is the National Diabetes Insulin Pump Audit interactive reporting and supporting information. It provides information on people with Type 1 diabetes on an insulin pump at National, LHB, and Specialist Diabetes Service level for the 2018-19 audit period. Note: An error was identified in the original release of the National Diabetes Insulin Pump Audit 2018-19, Interactive Report for Specialist Services in England. The number of people with Type 1 diabetes in the 'HbA1c values' section was overstated and showed the total number of people with any type of diabetes seen at the service. This has been corrected and replaced with a new version of the report on 23 December 2020.

This statistical report, co-authored with Public Health England (PHE), reports childhood vaccination coverage statistics for England in 2018-19. Data relates to the routine vaccinations offered to all children up to the age of five years, derived from the Cover of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly (COVER). Additional information on children aged 2 and 3 vaccinated against seasonal flu are collected from GPs through PHE's ImmForm system.

The National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) measures the quality of diabetes care provided to people with diabetes while they are admitted to hospital whatever the cause, and aims to support quality improvement. Data is collected and submitted by hospital staff in England and Wales. The NaDIA audit is part of the National Diabetes Audit (NDA) portfolio within the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP), commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP). In September 2018 NaDIA undertook a snapshot audit of hospital characteristics in England and Wales. In addition to the snapshot audit the collection of NaDIA-Harms began in England in 2018; this is a new continuous collection of serious inpatient harms that only affect people with diabetes. This report presents a range of information on smoking which is drawn together from a variety of sources. The report aims to present a broad picture of health issues relating to smoking in England and covers topics such as smoking prevalence, habits, behaviours and attitudes among adults and school children, smoking-related ill health and mortality and smoking-related costs.

This annual report brings together information on NHS dental activity in England for the 12-month period to 31 March 2019 (including clinical treatments and dental workforce) and information on the number of patients seen by an NHS dentist up to 30 June 2019. This publication includes information about patients seen and NHS dental activity broken down to dental practice level.

This statistical report presents information on obesity, physical activity and diet, drawn together from a variety of sources. The topics covered include: Obesity related hospital admissions. Prescription items for the treatment of obesity. Adult obesity prevalence. Childhood obesity prevalence. Physical activity levels among adults and children. Diet among adults and children, including trends in purchases, and consumption of food and drink and energy intake. Each section provides an overview of the key findings from these sources, as well as providing sources of further information and links to relevant documents and sources. Some of the data have been published previously by NHS Digital. A data visualisation tool at the link below allows users to select obesity related hospital admissions data for any Local Authority (as contained in Excel tables 3, 7 and 11 of this publication), along with time series data from 2013/14. Data for this publication are extracted each month as a snapshot in time from the GP Payments system (Open Exeter) maintained by NHS Digital. This release is an accurate snapshot as at 1 December 2018. GP Practice; Sustainability and transformation partnership (STP); Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG); NHS England Region and NHS England Commissioning Region level data are released in single year of age (SYOA) and 5-year age bands, both of which finish at 95+, split by gender. In addition, organisational mapping data is available to derive STP; CCG; Region and Commissioning Region associated with a GP practice and is updated each month to give relevant organisational mapping. Quarterly publications in January, April, July and October will include Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) populations and a topic of interest.

The NHS Outcomes Framework (NHS OF) is a set of indicators developed by the Department of Health and Social Care to monitor the health outcomes of adults and children in England. The framework provides an overview of how the NHS is performing. This report provides information about the indicators updated in this release. Update 29 January 2020: An error has been identified which affects multiple breakdowns for the 2017/18 data period in indicator 2.1. The following data has been removed from the current data set pages; the data has not been removed from this version of the publication. Deprivation, ethnicity, long-term conditions, religion and sexual orientation breakdowns. Four lower tier local authorities (LTLAs) contained duplicated data. The data for the affected LTLAs has been removed. This publication contains the official statistics about uses of the Mental Health Act(1) ('the Act') in England during 2018-19. Under the Act, people with a mental disorder may be formally detained in hospital (or 'sectioned') in the interests of their own health or safety, or for the protection of other people. They can also be treated in the community but subject to recall to hospital for assessment and/or treatment under a Community Treatment Order (CTO). In 2016-17, the way we source and produce these statistics changed. Previously these statistics were produced from the KP90 aggregate data collection. They are now primarily produced from the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). The MHSDS provides a much richer data source for these statistics, allowing for new insights into uses of the Act. However, some providers that make use of the Act are not yet submitting data to the MHSDS, or submitting incomplete data. Improvements in data quality have been made over the past year. NHS Digital is working with partners to ensure that all providers are submitting complete data and this publication includes guidance on interpreting these statistics.
