    Description

*** This dataset has been discontinued from November 2015 - please refer to "NHS Workforce - Medical Staff" and "NHS Workforce - Non Medical Staff" datasets using the additional links below ***

Provisional monthly figures for headcount, full time equivalent and role count of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in England (excluding primary care staff).

As expected with provisional statistics, some figures may be revised from month to month as issues are uncovered and resolved. No refreshes of the provisional data will take place either as part of the regular publication process, or where minor enhancements to the methodology have an insignificant impact on the figures at a national level.

The monthly publication is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. Given the size of the NHS workforce and the changing composition, particularly during this period of transition, it is likely that we will see some additional fluctuations in the workforce numbers over the next few months reflecting both national and local changes as a result of the NHS reforms. These statistics relate to the contracted positions within English NHS organisations and may include those where the person assigned to the position is temporarily absent, for example on maternity leave.

    Description

The minimum data set (MDS) collection for health visiting (HV) provides the number of full time equivalent (FTE) health visitors employed by all NHS organisations, Local Authorities and Social Enterprises. It collects information from Area Teams (ATs) that employ health visitors but do not use the Electronic Staff Record (ESR), such as local authorities and some social enterprises. Those NHS organisations using ESR have their HV numbers fed directly into the collection.

The MDS collection for HV differs from the monthly workforce statistics published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre as it is solely focused on health visitors and includes those who are employed by non-NHS organisations and those organisations that do not use ESR over and above those NHS organisations included in the standard monthly workforce statistics.

    Description

This is a monthly report on publicly funded community services for children, young people and adults using data from the Community Services Data Set (CSDS) reported in England for May 2018.

The CSDS is a patient-level dataset providing information relating to publicly funded community services for children, young people and adults. These services can include district nursing services, school nursing services, health visiting services and occupational therapy services, among others. The data collected includes personal and demographic information, diagnoses including long-term conditions and disabilities and care events plus screening activities.

It has been developed to help achieve better outcomes for children, young people and adults. It provides data that will be used to commission services in a way that improves health, reduces inequalities, and supports service improvement and clinical quality.

Prior to October 2017, the predecessor Children and Young People’s Health Services (CYPHS) Data Set collected data for children and young people aged 0-18. The CSDS superseded the CYPHS data set to allow adult community data to be submitted, expanding the scope of the existing data set by removing the 0-18 age restriction. The structure and content of the CSDS remains the same as the previous CYPHS data set. Further information about the CYPHS and related statistical reports is available from http://content.digital.nhs.uk/maternityandchildren/CYPHS

References to children and young people covers records submitted for 0-18 year olds and references to adults covers records submitted for those aged over 18. Where analysis for both groups have been combined, this is referred to as all patients.

These statistics are classified as experimental and should be used with caution. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. They are published in order to involve users and stakeholders in their development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage. More information about experimental statistics can be found on the UK Statistics Authority website,

Statistical change notice: Please note, the Health Visitor Minimum Data Set (HVMDS) no longer collects the number of health visitors in training. These data were last collected for June 2015 and were published in September 2015. From the current month onwards the health visitor's tables will no longer show this data. These are still available within previous publications with the latest data available. In addition, the last month we propose to publish any HVMDS Health Visitor data will be in December 2015 (for September 2015 data). Users need to be aware of intended changes to the presentation of these statistics. For further information, please read the "revisions and issues section" of this month's bulletin. NHS UK - COVID-19 Daily Deaths

This section contains information on deaths of patients who have died in hospitals in England and had tested positive for COVID-19 at time of death. All deaths are recorded against the date of death rather than the date the deaths were announced. Interpretation of the figures should take into account the fact that totals by date of death, particularly for most recent days, are likely to be updated in future releases. For example as deaths are confirmed as testing positive for COVID-19, as more post-mortem tests are processed and data from them are validated. Any changes are made clear in the daily files.

These figures do not include deaths outside hospital, such as those in care homes. This approach makes it possible to compile deaths data on a daily basis using up to date figures.

    Dataset Content

These figures will be updated at 2pm each day and include confirmed cases reported at 5pm the previous day. Confirmation of COVID-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure. This means that the totals reported at 5pm on each day may not include all deaths that occurred on that day or on recent prior days.

The original dataset is sourced directly from the NHS source site, this original dataset is then cleaned and converted to a csv format available for inclusion into a Kaggle notebook.

    There are 3 files considered within the data :- 1. Fatalities_by_age_uk 2.Fatalities_by_region_uk 3.Fatalities_by_trust_uk

Data runs from March 1st up to the current day. Any discrepancies will be outlined. The first is cumulative for any previous days leading up to of relevance. The following days are not cumulative and represent the updated value for the date under consideration.

A start kernel is provided to demonstrate using the dataset.

Provisional monthly figures for headcount, full-time equivalent, role count and turnover of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in England (excluding primary care staff). As expected with provisional statistics, some figures may be revised from month to month as issues are uncovered and resolved. No refreshes of the provisional data will take place either as part of the regular publication process, or where minor enhancements to the methodology have an insignificant impact on the figures at a national level. However, the provisional status allows for this to occur if it is determined that a refresh of data is required subsequent to initial release. Where a refresh of data occurs, it will be clearly documented in the publications. The monthly publication is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. Given the size of the NHS workforce and the changing composition, particularly during this period of transition, it is likely that we will see some additional fluctuations in the workforce numbers over the next few months, reflecting both national and local changes as a result of the NHS reforms. These statistics relate to the contracted positions within English NHS organisations and may include those where the person assigned to the position is temporarily absent, for example on maternity leave. Please note: Concerns have been raised relating to the accuracy of the Health Visitor Minimum Data Set (MDS) training figures. This note is just to highlight a potential issue that may require a future revision to these figures. This does not affect any other data items within this publication. We welcome feedback on the methodology and tables within this publication. Please email us with your comments and suggestions, clearly stating 'Monthly HCHS Workforce' as the subject heading, via enquiries@hscic.gov.uk or 0300 303 5678.

    Context

    Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics

This publication provides the most timely picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These are experimental statistics which are undergoing development and evaluation. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series.

    • COVID-19 and the production of statistics

Due to the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) disruption, it would seem that this is now starting to affect the quality and coverage of some of our statistics, such as an increase in non-submissions for some datasets. We are also starting to see some different patterns in the submitted data. For example, fewer patients are being referred to hospital and more appointments being carried out via phone/telemedicine/email. Therefore, data should be interpreted with care over the COVID-19 period.
