PLEASE NOTE: Following the consultation on the proposal to stop producing this report, it has been confirmed that this report will continue to be produced by NHS Digital. The format in which it will continue is yet to be finalised.
Data are extracted as a quarterly snapshot in time from the GP Payments system maintained by NHS Digital. This release is an accurate snapshot as at 1 January 2017.
Since April 2014, geographical references have been taken from 2011 census information.
GP level data are released in single year of age (SYOA) and 5-year age bands, both of which finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated.
Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England Region and NHS England Commissioning Region level data are released in 5-year age bands which also finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated.
Unlike early versions of this report, there is no suppression of data for practices with 100 or fewer registered patients.
An additional machine readable version is provided in practice/LSOA/totals format. Further information on LSOA is available via the link at the end of the page.

This publication provides the most timely picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These are experimental statistics which are undergoing development and evaluation. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series. • COVID-19 and the production of statistics Due to the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) disruption, it would seem that this is now starting to affect the quality and coverage of some of our statistics, such as an increase in non-submissions for some datasets. We are also starting to see some different patterns in the submitted data. For example, fewer patients are being referred to hospital and more appointments being carried out via phone/telemedicine/email. Therefore, data should be interpreted with care over the COVID-19 period. • Early release of statistics To support the ongoing COVID-19 work May 2020 monthly statistics were made available early and presented on our supplementary information pages. https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/supplementary-information/2020/provisional-may-2020-mental-health-statistics • Changing existing measures The move to MHSDS version 4.1 from April 2020 has brought with it changes to the dataset; the construction of a number of measures have been changed as a result. Improvements in the methodology of reporting delay of discharge has also resulted in a change in the construction of the measure from the April 2020 publication onwards. Full details of these changes are available in the associated Metadata file. • New measures A number of new measures will be included in this publication: • MHS76 Count of people subject to restrictive interventions • MHS77 Count of restrictive interventions • MHS78 Discharges from adult acute beds eligible for 72 hour follow up in the reporting period • MHS79 Discharges from adult acute beds followed up within 72 hours in the reporting period • MHS80 Proportion of discharges from adult acute beds eligible for 72 hour follow up - followed up in the reporting period Full details of these are available in the associated Metadata file. • CCG and STP changes A number of changes to NHS organisations were made operationally effective from 1 April 2020. These changes included: 74 former Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) merging to form 18 new CCGs; alterations to commissioning hubs; provider mergers; and the incorporation of Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) into the NHS commissioning hierarchy. The Organisation Data Service (ODS) is responsible for publishing organisation and practitioner codes, along with related national policies and standards. A series of ODS data amendments are required to support the introduction of these changes. This would normally result in a number of organisations becoming ‘legally’ closed including the 74 former CCGs. However, to minimise any burden to the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic and remove any non-critical activity, these organisations remain open within ODS data. ODS aim to both legally and operationally close predecessor organisations involved in April 2020 Reconfiguration on 30 September 2020. Activity may be recorded against either former or current organisations, depending on data providers and processors ability to transition to the new organisation codes at this time. The same activity will not be recorded against both former and current organisations. The impact for the measures presented here is minimal as CCG is derived in the majority of all cases it is used within this publication. NHS Digital are working to understand the implications of this on how you can interpret these statistics and will provide more information in future editions of this publication series. • STP breakdowns not published STP breakdowns for MHS69 are currently absent from the CSV files. These will be included as soon as they are available. The Data Collection Board (DCB) has now approved the decommissioning of the interim collection of Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) waiting times information, known as NHS England Unify Collection within this publication. Waiting times for EIP for October 2019 activity onwards are now monitored using data from the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). From April 2020 NHS Digital has implemented a multiple submission window model (MSWM) for MHSDS which will enable the resubmission of data throughout the financial year. Please be aware of the potential impact of the multiple submission window model on previously published data and use these statistics with reference to it. Further information can be found on the NHS Digital Multiple submission window model for MHSDS webpage linked below. Corrections have been made to this publication on 06 August 2020, 20 August 2020 and 9 August 2021. These amendments relate to statistics published here; the specific measures effected are listed in the Metadata file available in the below link. All listed measures have now been corrected. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Data for General Medical Practices, General Medical Practitioners, Prescribing Cost Centres and Dispensaries are supplied by the NHS Prescription Services and are used to facilitate their remit to remunerate dispensing contractors and provide the NHS with financial, prescribing and drug information. Users need to be aware of a number of characteristics of the data:
• The GP practices file contains all prescribing cost centres as opposed to solely GP practices. Those that offer Out of Hours services, operate as Walk-In Centres or are situated within a prison are identified with a type code in field 26
• GPs may have more than one identifier within the file – one for each practice they prescribe from. Note that the practice code is supplied in field 15 of the practitioner file.
• Some codes do not identify a real individual, but exist to track prescribing activity of GPs working temporarily; i.e. a ‘bucket’ code assigned to a practice, for ad-hoc use by locums.
Some key consequences include:
• The codes are not unique identifiers for GPs. They are more accurately described as identifying prescribing cost centres, and their relationship with a location (GP practice).
• The data does not provide an accurate depiction of the number of GPs practicing within the UK.
Further information relating to the contents and usage of each file can be found on the further information link, or from systems.hscic.gov.uk/data/ods.

TwitterData are extracted as a quarterly snapshot in time from the GP Payments system maintained by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). This release was extracted on 1 Oct 2015 so will cover the time period 1 April 2015 up to close of play on 30 September 2015. Since April 2014, geographical references have been taken from 2011 census information.
GP Practice level data are released in single year of age (SYOA) and 5-year age bands, both of which finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated.
Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS England Region and NHS England Commissioning Region level data are released in 5-year age bands which now finish at 95+, split by gender and aggregated.
For the above reports, the data for GP Practices with 100 or fewer registered patients have been suppressed due to possible identification of individuals when data are linked to other data sets.
Data for GP practices at Lower Super Output Area (LSOA) level are provided by gender but not by age bands so no suppression is required. An additional machine readable version is provided in practice/LSOA/totals format. Further information on LSOA is available via the link at the end of the page.
New Health Geography structure:

Data for the first prospective year of the National Cataract Audit. The data was collected as part of routine clinical care on electronic medical record systems in 56 participating centres. The three metrics used in the national cataract audit are case ascertainment and adjusted rates for posterior capsular rupture and visual acuity loss. The denominator for case ascertainment was the number of cataract operations reported to NHS digital, 3 centres did not supply this information to NHS digital and 2 centres supplied data for more cataract operations than they reported to NHS digital. Operative data is more consistent than post-operative data as not all centres use the electronic medical record systems in all areas of their hospital eye service. Post-operative results also do not include operations performed in the last 2 months of the audit. Results are provided for contributing NHS Trusts and not for individual sites as this information was not uniformly collected in the first year of the audit. Two centres removed permission for their case complexity adjusted results to be published. The ophthalmology service for Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is now run by Moorefield's Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and these two NHS Trusts have the same ODS code. The results for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust include patients from Airedale Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as cataract surgery for Airedale patients is performed in Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites.

Abeyance and Dispersal GP Codes
Contains:
Usually, when a GP retires or leaves a practice, a successor is appointed prior to the departure of the outgoing GP. In such cases, if the GP in question holds their own 'list' of patients on the Practice and NHAIS systems, these are transferred to the new GP (referred to as the successor) using bulk transfer processes. There are, however, two circumstances where this is not possible:
Where a successor has yet to be appointed, the NHAIS system currently offers the facility to set the individual GP list to 'abeyance'. This leaves the patients technically registered with the departing GP until a successor can be obtained. In practice, the patients are usually still treated by the remaining partners in the practice, or sometimes a locum is employed temporarily by the practice. This process ensures the practice list is still calculated appropriately for payment.
When a successor is not actively being sought, the NHAIS dispersal function is used; patients registered with the GP are written to advising them to register with a new GP. In order to ensure that NSTS and PDS are correct, it is necessary to set up Abeyance/Dispersal codes; these take the form of GP Practitioner format codes which relate to a practice rather than an individual GP, and ODS has responsibility for this.
