Data are available as headcount and full-time equivalents and for all months from 30 September 2009 onwards. These data are an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS HR and Payroll system. Additional statistics on staff in NHS Trusts and CCGs and information for NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies are published each: September (showing June statistics) December/January (showing September statistics) March (showing December statistics) June (showing March statistics) Quarterly NHS Staff Earnings, monthly NHS Staff Sickness Absence reports, and data relating to the General Practice workforce and the Independent Healthcare Provider workforce are also available via the Related Links below. Due to changes to the mapping of some HCHS organisations and GP practices from June 2022 at region level (Integrated Care System, NHS England region and Government Office Region), only the June 2022 data in tables 3 and 4 of the Provisional statistics file fully reflects the new health geographies. The 'Annual change' and 'Annual % change' information for affected regions are marked as 'Not applicable' in these tables. Complete comparable regional time series tables will be included next month in the July 2022 Provisional statistics file, released in September 2022. *** This dataset has been discontinued from November 2015 - please refer to "NHS Workforce - Medical Staff" and "NHS Workforce - Non Medical Staff" datasets using the additional links below *** Provisional monthly figures for headcount, full time equivalent and role count of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in England (excluding primary care staff). As expected with provisional statistics, some figures may be revised from month to month as issues are uncovered and resolved. No refreshes of the provisional data will take place either as part of the regular publication process, or where minor enhancements to the methodology have an insignificant impact on the figures at a national level. The monthly publication is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. Given the size of the NHS workforce and the changing composition, particularly during this period of transition, it is likely that we will see some additional fluctuations in the workforce numbers over the next few months reflecting both national and local changes as a result of the NHS reforms. These statistics relate to the contracted positions within English NHS organisations and may include those where the person assigned to the position is temporarily absent, for example on maternity leave.
As of February 2024, the National Health Service (NHS) in England employed a total of 1.34 million staff members on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis, including 140 thousand HCHS doctors. This is less than the number of NHS staff on a headcount basis, as not all employees work full-time. This makes the NHS the largest employer in England. This statistic shows the number of staff on a FTE basis in the NHS Hospitals and Community Health Services (HCHS) in England as of February 2024, by staff group.
As of december 2024, the majority of vacancies in Northern Ireland's health and social care department were in social services, with 1,276 vacancies. The second-highest number of vacancies was for registered nurses and midwifes, with 1,241 vacancies.
The number of HCHS doctors leaving generally increased during the period reaching 21,000 leavers in the year 2022/23, the highest reported in the period analyzed, and over a seven percent increase from the figure reported a year earlier.
Assignment count and Full-time equivalent of directly employed NHS staff by grade and area of work. General Medical and Dental Practitioners are excluded as they are independent NHS contractors.
In the financial year 2023/24, the NHS spent 81.7 billion British pounds on permanent and bank staff. Over the years, the amount of spending on the NHS workforce has increased significantly, especially the year 2020/21 where a 12.6 percent increase was observed. However, the NHS's share of revenue expenditure spent on staff has remained relatively stable in the past 10 years.
From 2009 to 2023, the number of support staff for doctors, nurses, and midwives in England's National Health Service (NHS) increased, reaching roughly 299 thousand full-time equivalent employees as of November 2023. This statistic shows the total number of support doctors, nurses and midwives in the NHS Hospitals and Community Health Services (HCHS) workforce in England from 2009 to 2023.
According to a 2022 survey, 51.6 percent of respondents felt that there were always enough nurses on duty to care for them in the hospital. This statistic displays patients' opinions on the amount of nursing staff in NHS hospitals in England in 2022.
In 2019, over 21.1 thousand nurses in the United Kingdom held an Asian nationality, while 18.6 thousand nurses had an EU nationality. Furthermore, there were approximately 14.6 thousand Asian doctors in the UK, and 10.4 thousand doctors with an EU nationality. The highest amount of NHS workers from the rest of the World were working as support to clinical staff, with 9.4 thousand categorized in this staff group.
Make up of non-UK NHS workers
The highest share of healthcare employees who were from the EU occur in the younger age groups, with almost 40 thousand employees in the period 2016 to 2018 aged under 34 years of age. While, 39 thousand health care workers in the UK aged between 35 and 44 years are from outside of the EU. 30 thousand NHS employees working in London were EU nationals, the highest amount of any region in the UK although London is one the most populated and most diverse region in the UK.
Impact of Brexit
In 2019, it was found that almost 20 percent of healthcare professionals in the UK knew at least one colleague considering leaving their job due to Brexit. While twelve percent knew a co-worker, who had already left because of the Brexit situation. Due to the large number of workers from the EU in the NHS, the service could be very vulnerable to Brexit and the potential of many employees leaving due to Brexit.
The majority of NHS staff in England worked additional unpaid hours. In 2024, just over half of surveyed staff reported working unpaid overtime, while the other half did not. Among those who worked unpaid overtime, most did up to five hours of extra work, while three percent worked 11 hours or more. Although staff working unpaid overtime is showing signs of decrease, paid overtime has increased slightly.

The minimum data set (MDS) collection for health visiting (HV) provides the number of full time equivalent (FTE) health visitors employed by all NHS organisations, Local Authorities and Social Enterprises. It collects information from Area Teams (ATs) that employ health visitors but do not use the Electronic Staff Record (ESR), such as local authorities and some social enterprises. Those NHS organisations using ESR have their HV numbers fed directly into the collection. The MDS collection for HV differs from the monthly workforce statistics published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre as it is solely focused on health visitors and includes those who are employed by non-NHS organisations and those organisations that do not use ESR over and above those NHS organisations included in the standard monthly workforce statistics.
In 2023, there were over 7.4 million people employed in hospitals across the United States. This is the highest number in the recorded time period and hospital employment numbers have returned to and surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
Please note, this month’s publication, December 2015 (relating to September 2015 data) will be the last month that the Health Visitor Minimum Data Set (HVMDS) information will be published by the HSCIC.
Users need to be aware of intended changes to the presentation of these statistics. For further information, please read the “revisions and issues section” of this month’s bulletin.
Provisional monthly figures for headcount, full-time equivalent, role count and turnover of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in England (excluding primary care staff).

No refreshes of the provisional data will take place either as part of the regular publication process, or where minor enhancements to the methodology have an insignificant impact on the figures at a national level.
However, the provisional status allows for this to occur if it is determined that a refresh of data is required subsequent to initial release. Where a refresh of data occurs, it will be clearly documented in the publications.
