    Description

The National Health Service Hospital Episode Statistics (NHS HES) include over 1 billion medical records of patients who attended outpatient appointments, were seen at accident and emergency (A&E) departments, or were admitted to NHS hospitals in England. This data is collected and curated on a monthly basis and has been used for purposes such as research and service evaluation. HES consists of the following datasets:

    • Hospital Episode Statistics Admitted Patient Care (HES APC): January 1989 to present day
    • Hospital Episode Statistics Critical Care (HES Critical Care): January 2007 to present day
    • Hospital Episode Statistics Outpatients (HES OP): January 2003 to present day
    • Hospital Episode Statistics Accident and Emergency (HES A&E): January 2007 to April 2020

HES includes clinical (e.g., diagnoses, operations), demographic (e.g., age group, gender, and ethnicity), administrative (e.g., dates of admission and discharge), and geographic information. Information about mental health specific hospital activities are included in a separate data product, the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). Since October 2017, national data on urgent and emergency care has been compiled in the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS), which replaced HES A&E.

    Description

On 21 February 2022 the Prime Minister set out a new plan for ‘Living with COVID-19’ with the end of free universal testing for the general public on 1 April 2022. As a result the frequency of this publication and accompanying data tables will reduce from weekly publications to 2-weekly publications of weekly data from 14 April 2022 (period covering 31 March 2022 to 6 April 2022). Furthermore, it is anticipated that the changes in testing policy will result in a noticeably smaller publication, with a reduction in data output tables. Details of affected data output tables will be communicated on 31 March 2022.

The data reflects the NHS Test and Trace operation in England since its launch on 28 May 2020.

    This includes 2 weekly reports:

    1. NHS Test and Trace statistics:

    • people tested for coronavirus (COVID-19)
    • people testing positive for COVID-19
    • time taken for test results to become available
    • people transferred to the contact tracing system and the time taken for them to be reached
    • close contacts identified for cases managed and not managed by local health protection teams (HPTs), and time taken for them to be reached

    2. Rapid asymptomatic testing statistics: number of lateral flow device (LFD) tests reported by test result.

There are 4 sets of data tables accompanying the reports.

    Description

Provisional experimental publication of NHS vacancy statistics created from administrative data related to published vacancy adverts obtained from NHS Jobs, the main recruitment website for the NHS. The statistics referred to in these tables are exploratory and provide information on the administrative data available from NHS Jobs as much as on the recruitment of staff. This publication provides figures which are an insight to recruitment in the NHS but which should be treated with caution, and users are discouraged from attempting to draw any conclusions from this data at this time. Due to a change in methodology (moving from a count of vacancy adverts to advertised vacancy full-time equivalents) these figures are not directly comparable to to each other, therefore this data should not be used to extend that time series. For further details on the change in methodology please refer to the 'Points to note' section of the publication report.

    Description

*** This dataset has been discontinued from November 2015 - please refer to "NHS Workforce - Medical Staff" and "NHS Workforce - Non Medical Staff" datasets using the additional links below *** Provisional monthly figures for headcount, full time equivalent and role count of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in England (excluding primary care staff). As expected with provisional statistics, some figures may be revised from month to month as issues are uncovered and resolved. No refreshes of the provisional data will take place either as part of the regular publication process, or where minor enhancements to the methodology have an insignificant impact on the figures at a national level. The monthly publication is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. It has a provisional status as the data may change slightly over time where trusts make updates to their live operational systems. Given the size of the NHS workforce and the changing composition, particularly during this period of transition, it is likely that we will see some additional fluctuations in the workforce numbers over the next few months reflecting both national and local changes as a result of the NHS reforms. These statistics relate to the contracted positions within English NHS organisations and may include those where the person assigned to the position is temporarily absent, for example on maternity leave.

Description

Publication changes: Please read the section on 'Notes on changes to publications' within the PDF report as this highlights changes to data currently published and potentially future reports. This report shows monthly numbers of NHS Hospital and Community Health Service (HCHS) staff groups working in Trusts and CCGs in England (excluding primary care staff). Data is available as headcount and full-time equivalents. This data is an accurate summary of the validated data extracted from the NHS's HR and Payroll system. In addition to the regular monthly reports there are a series of quarterly reports which include statistics on staff in Trusts and CCGs and information for NHS Support Organisations and Central Bodies. The quarterly analysis is published each September (June data), December (September data), March (December data) and June (March data). Additional healthcare workforce data relating to GPs and the Independent Healthcare Provider workforce are also available via the Related Links below. We welcome feedback on the methodology and tables within this publication. Please email us with your comments and suggestions, clearly stating Monthly HCHS Workforce as the subject heading, via enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk or 0300 303 5678
