There is a completed file for each month. FOI8592 has 2 files (February 2019 and March 2019) Source System – ISP (National MIS Files) NHSBSA Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users. This report consists of a management information file detailing monthly Community Pharmacy and Appliance Payments by type of payment and contractor account. Payments include all drug costs, fees, patient charges, locally authorised payments, etc. Other details such as the numbers of items dispensed, patient’s charges collected are also included. The management information file reflects the contractor's payment and prescription data associated with the sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) structure at the relevant payment date. The data contained within the files can be interpreted correctly by using the ‘MIS Glossary’ available under ‘Management Information Spreadsheet (MIS) Report’ at https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/information-services-portal-isp/isp-report-information . The data in column METHADONE PAYMT and ADD FEE-2E within the Pharmacy dataset have been removed following Information Governance policy. The BNF Code is a 15 digit code in which the first seven digits are allocated according to the categories in the BNF and the last 8 digits represent the medicinal product, form, strength and the link to the generic equivalent product. NHS Prescription Services has created pseudo BNF chapters, which are not published, for items not included in BNF chapters 1 to 15. The majority of such items are dressings and appliances which NHS Prescription Services has classified into four pseudo BNF chapters (20 to 23). Items Items shows the number of times a product appears on a prescription form not the quantity prescribed. Total Quantity Total quantity is the number of items multiplied by the quantity prescribed. e.g. 2 items prescribed, one with a quantity of 2 and one with a quantity of 3, the total quantity would show as 5 (1 item x quantity of 2) + (1 item x quantity of 3) Net Ingredient Cost (NIC(£)) Net Ingredient cost (NIC) is the basic price of a drug as stated in Part II Clause 8 of the Drug Tariff but please note that where a price concession for items listed in Part VIII of the Drug Tariff has been agreed between the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee the NIC will reflect the concession price rather than the Drug Tariff price. Dispensing data by BNF Code and CCG is available through NHS BSA website. In that data set the records are split between Pharmacy Contractors and Appliance Contractors. I would like to see the same data every month for each Appliance Contractor rather than an aggregated figure. Data on numbers of prescriptions processed etc IS available but not the detail on what has been dispensed.
On 19 May 2022 you clarified the following:
Thanks for your reply. I’m looking for something similar to the published “Prescription Cost Analysis (PCA) Monthly Administrative Data”. I hadn’t realised the contractors themselves were mapped to STPs, I thought it was the STP of the GP prescribing so I don’t need that merely something similar to the existing data set excluding some of the fields but with the addition of the DAC Contractor information with the type is English Appliance Contractor’ (as in the yellow columns) I only want BNF chapters 21, 22 & 23 and I would like the data by month for the last 24 available months or 36 if the extract can all be done at the same time.
A copy of the information is attached.

Could I please request the prescribing data for unlicensed cannabis based medicinal products [CBMP] prescribed privately, from Nov 2018 until the most recent available. I'm particularly looking for the item count, broken down on a monthly basis. Response A copy of the information is attached. Private prescribing of unlicensed cannabis-based medicines November 2018 to March 2023 NHS Prescription Services, within the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration. This information is then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings. There are other arrangements in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration. This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users. Data Source When prescriptions are processed by the NHSBSA data capture, prescriptions sometimes contain prescribing of medicines that were not populated on the NHSBSA drug database at the time. This type of order will be captured as an ‘unspecified drug.’ Data for prescribing of unlicensed cannabis-based medicines has been taken from data captured as unspecified prescribing. Unlicensed cannabis-based medicines are identified by an additional review process which occurs after the prescriptions have been processed. The items identified by this review are reported against the date that the prescription was written and not necessarily when they were submitted. Therefore, these figures may be subject to change if the prescription is submitted to the NHSBSA in a later month. This dataset This dataset shows total items per month for private prescriptions for unlicensed cannabis-based products. Time Period November 2018 to March 2023 (the latest available month currently). The Data is presented monthly. Organisation Data Data for private unlicensed prescriptions is limited to prescriptions dispensed in England. Items Shows the number of times a product appears on a prescription form not the quantity prescribed.
Please provide the information in the same format as FOI 01274 Response A copy of the information is attached. The Pensions Online (POL) Helpdesk is part of the Employer Helpline (option 2 on the call directing) Question 6 I am writing to advise you that the information you requested is not held by the NHS Business Services Authority. The way which we record complaints has changed. As such, the way in which we capture, record, and categorise no longer allows us to identify which channel the complaint was received, or which channel the complaint was in reference to. Complaints are now categorised more generally relating to the main subject of the complaint. The Innovation Scorecard reports on the use of medicines and medicine groupings in the NHS in England, which have been positively appraised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). NHS Digital has produced and published the Innovation Scorecard as an Official Statistic since January 2013 on behalf of the Office for Life Sciences. It can be used by local NHS organisations to monitor progress in implementing NICE Technology Appraisal (TA) recommendations. The scorecard is produced using a range of administrative data sources prior to publication and no additional central data collection is involved. This publication is the third in the series to use the Secondary Care Medicines data that is supplied by Rx-Info and now published by the NHS BSA through their open data portal to provide a richer source of data down to hospital Trust level. This data is not directly comparable with the secondary care data used in previous publications due to variations in the coverage and completeness and changes in some of the prescribing measures used to present volume of use in this publication. The estimates report has now been replaced with a methodology statement as the figures for estimated expected uptake have been integrated into the national level groupings dashboard.
