This data should be used carefully for statistical analysis and reporting due to missing perimeters (see Use Limitation in metadata). Some fires are missing because historical records were lost or damaged, were too small for the minimum cutoffs, had inadequate documentation or have not yet been incorporated into the database. Other errors with the fire perimeter database include duplicate fires and over-generalization. Additionally, over-generalization, particularly with large old fires, may show unburned "islands" within the final perimeter as burned. Users of the fire perimeter database must exercise caution in application of the data. Careful use of the fire perimeter database will prevent users from drawing inaccurate or erroneous conclusions from the data. This data is updated annually in the spring with fire perimeters from the previous fire season. This dataset may differ in California compared to that available from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) due to different requirements between the two datasets. The data covers fires back to 1878. As of May 2025, it represents fire24_1.

Current criteria for data collection are as follows:
CAL FIRE (including contract counties) submit perimeters ≥10 acres in timber, ≥50 acres in brush, or ≥300 acres in grass, and/or ≥3 impacted residential or commercial structures, and/or caused ≥1 fatality.
All cooperating agencies submit perimeters ≥10 acres.
Version update:
Firep24_1 was released in April 2025. Five hundred forty-eight fires from the 2024 fire season were added to the database (2 from BIA, 56 from BLM, 197 from CAL FIRE, 193 from Contract Counties, 27 from LRA, 8 from NPS, 55 from USFS and 8 from USFW). Six perimeters were added from the 2025 fire season (as a special case due to an unusual January fire siege). Five duplicate fires were removed, and the 2023 Sage was replaced with a more accurate perimeter. There were 900 perimeters that received updated attribution (705 removed “FIRE” from the end of Fire Name field and 148 replaced Complex IRWIN ID with Complex local incident number for COMPLEX_ID field). The following fires were identified as meeting our collection criteria but are not included in this version and will hopefully be added in a future update: Addie (2024-CACND-002119), Alpaugh (2024-CACND-001715), South (2024-CATIA-001375). One perimeter is missing containment date that will be updated in the next release.
Cross checking CALFIRS reporting for new CAL FIRE submissions to ensure accuracy with cause class was added to the compilation process. The cause class domain description for “Powerline” was updated to “Electrical Power” to be more inclusive of cause reports.
Includes separate layers filtered by criteria as follows:
California Fire Perimeters (All): Unfiltered. The entire collection of wildfire perimeters in the database. It is scale dependent and starts displaying at the country level scale.
Recent Large Fire Perimeters (≥5000 acres): Filtered for wildfires greater or equal to 5,000 acres for the last 5 years of fires (2020-January 2025), symbolized with color by year and is scale dependent and starts displaying at the country level scale. Year-only labels for recent large fires.
California Fire Perimeters (1950+): Filtered for wildfires that started in 1950-January 2025. Symbolized by decade, and display starting at country level scale.

This map provides a number of layers from external fire agencies and organizations that provide consistently updated map layers regarding the location and status of active and past wildfires managed by CalFire as well as federal agencies. In addition, a NOAA weather warnings layer is included to get perspective on weather conditions that may affect the behavior of active fires. And, there is also a 2013 wildland fire potential map included in the table of contents. Please turn the layers on and off and explore the various information available in the map. This list includes all of the data sources for the map: Wildfire_Activity - Active perimeter:The Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group (GeoMAC) is an internet-based mapping tool originally designed for fire managers to access online maps of current wildland fire locations and perimeters in the continental United States and Alaska. Perimeters are submitted to GeoMAC by the incident commands via FTP and web sites for downloading. This file contains all wildland fire perimeters that were submitted to GeoMAC by the incidents for the current year. The projection is geographic and the datum is NAD83. Information from wildlandfire.com is professionally sourced fire intel from the boots on the ground, eyes in the sky, and ears on the radio. Chances are that information will come here first before anywhere else.
As the user interacts with the map more information becomes available. Other available tools such as measuring distance or getting a view of the terrain are available to help in assessing fire danger. We encourage you to turn on and off layers that suit your viewing preferences. The Weather Observation (Radar) and Fire Potential layers are initially turned off. Please find an area and view them as you interact with the map. The US Wildfire Locations layer displays large active fire incidents entered into the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) database by local emergency response groups. This layer is generated and maintained as part of the Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group (GeoMAC) application, and also accessed by Natural Hazards Support System (NHSS).
Wildland Fire Potential layer was provided by the USFS and indicates zones of high, medium and low fire potential. Potential Fire
The Active Fire Perimeters layer is a product of Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination (GeoMAC). Near real-time information for fire perimeter data is updated daily from incident sources, GPS data, infrared (IR) imagery such as fixed wing and satellite platforms.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) layer is created by FEMA and provides information regarding fire relief shelters locations, current status (open or closed) and number of occupancy. This near real-time layer is updated daily from FEMA Shelters.
The Moderate Resolution Spectroradiometer (MODIS thermal) layer is created from the MODIS satellite detection system and indicates hot spots that could be future fire locations identified in the last 24 hour period. Data source is the EOSDIS website hosted by NASA.
The Current Wind Conditions layer is created from hourly METAR/TAF data provided from NOAA. This layer uses arrow vectors and wind speeds to provide real-time wind flow dynamics.
Radar (Weather Observation) and weather (Red Flag Warnings) are both continuous real-time layers provided by NOAA. The weather observations layer provides high temperatures, surface pressure and wind barbs along with radar return. The weather warning layer provides an array of warnings that are available with pop-up windows. CAL FIRE Locations and Perimeters: Since CAL FIRE does not always send daily updates to the USGS GeoMAC we are utilizing their KML feed to keep this map up to date. Please note - these can conflict with information from the USGS Wildfire Activity feed below.
Wildfire Activity: This displays large active fire incidents and situation reports that have been entered into the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) database by local emergency response teams. The Active Fire Perimeters layer is a product of Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination (GeoMAC). Wildland fire perimeter data provided by the GeoMAC site are derived from data produced by GIS specialists working on each incident. Perimeter data displayed in and delivered by the GeoMAC application are not the final or official perimeters for any incident and are provided for informational purposes only. The final official perimeter should be obtained from the host unit, which can be determined by looking at the Unit Id for any specific fire. The host unit is responsible for producing official and final perimeters for all incidents in their jurisdiction. Hot Spot: The MODIS thermal layer is created from the MODIS satellite detection system and represents hot spots that could be potential fire locations in the last 24 hour period at a horizontal resolution of 1 km and temporal resolution of 1 to 2 days. Feature layer showing all the fires tracked by Cal OES GIS for the year to date.
Initial attack frequency zones are used by pilots and dispatchers for purposes of response to incidents such as wildland fires. Initial attack frequency zones are agreed upon annually by the Communications Duty Officer at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), other frequency managers, and the FAA, and can't be changed during the year without required approval from the CDO at NIFC. Each zone has assigned to it FAA-issued frequencies that are to be used only within the zone boundary. The initial attack frequency zones are delineated to help ensure that frequencies used do not "bleed" over into other incident areas and causing issues for incident communications. The data contains no actual frequencies, but does contain the zones in which they are used.

Boundary modified between CA03 and NV03, specifically between Queen Valley and Mono Valley. The team making the changes is made up of Southern Calif (JTomaselli) and Great Basin (GDingman) GACCs, with input from Ian Mills and Lance Rosen (BLM). Changes proposed will be put into effect for the 2023 calendar year, and will also impact alignments of GACC boundaries and Dispatch boundaries in the area described. East through Bodie to the CA/NV state line.
Follows the CA/NV State Line south to HWY CA 167/NV 359.
East on NV359 to where the HWY intersects the corner of FS/BLM land.
Follows the FS/BLM boundary to the east and then south where it ties into the current GACC boundary.

Predictive Service Areas (PSAs) are geographic areas for which national-level fire weather or fire danger services and products are produced by wildland fire agency meteorologists and intelligence staffs in support of resource allocation and prioritization. A PSA boundary defines areas where 2 or more weather elements or National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) indices exist with a high correlation to historical significant fire size. "Significant fires" are the 95th percentile fire size for the PSA.

The National Incident Feature Service (NIFS) is based on the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) data standard for Wildland Fire Event. The Wildland Fire Event data standard defines the minimum attributes necessary for collection, storage and dissemination of incident based data on wildland fires (wildfires and prescribed fires). The standard is not intended for long term data storage, rather a standard to assist in the creation of incident based data management tools, minimum standards for data exchange, and to assist users in meeting GIS Standard Operating Procedures on Incidents (GSTOP). The intent of this standard is to update existing data formats and provide a common set of attributes for use on wildland fires starting fire season 2016.

Overview
The national fire history perimeter data layer of conglomerated Agency Authoratative perimeters was developed in support of the WFDSS application and wildfire decision support for the 2021 fire season. The layer encompasses the final fire perimeter datasets of the USDA Forest Service, US Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service, the Alaska Interagency Fire Center, CalFire, and WFIGS History. Perimeters are included thru the 2021 fire season. Requirements for fire perimeter inclusion, such as minimum acreage requirements, are set by the contributing agencies.
WFIGS, NPS and CALFIRE data now include Prescribed Burns.

Fire perimeter data are often collected at the local level, and fire management agencies have differing guidelines for submitting fire perimeter data. Often data are collected by agencies only once annually. If you do not see your fire perimeters in this layer, they were not present in the sources used to create the layer at the time the data were submitted. A companion service for perimeters entered into the WFDSS application is also available, if a perimeter is found in the WFDSS service that is missing in this Agency Authoratative service or a perimeter is missing in both services, please contact the appropriate agency Fire GIS Contact listed in the table below.
