    Description

This Public Health Portfolio (Directly Funded Research - Programme and Training Awards) dataset contains NIHR directly funded research awards where the funding is allocated to an award holder or host organisation to carry out a specific piece of research or complete a training award. The NIHR also invests significantly in centres of excellence, collaborations, services and facilities to support research in England. Collectively these form NIHR infrastructure support. NIHR infrastructure supported projects are available in the Public Health Portfolio (Infrastructure Support) dataset which you can find here.NIHR directly funded research awards (Programmes and Training Awards) that were funded between January 2006 and the present extraction date are eligible for inclusion in this dataset. An agreed inclusion/exclusion criteria is used to categorise awards as public health awards (see below). Following inclusion in the dataset, public health awards are second level coded to one of the four Public Health Outcomes Framework domains. These domains are: (1) wider determinants (2) health improvement (3) health protection (4) healthcare and premature mortality.More information on the Public Health Outcomes Framework domains can be found here. This dataset is updated quarterly to include new NIHR awards categorised as public health awards. Please note that for those Public Health Research Programme projects showing an Award Budget of £0.00, the project is undertaken by an on-call team for example, PHIRST, Public Health Review Team, or Knowledge Mobilisation Team, as part of an ongoing programme of work.Inclusion CriteriaThe NIHR Public Health Overview project team worked with colleagues across NIHR public health research to define the inclusion criteria for NIHR public health research. NIHR directly funded research awards are categorised as public health if they are determined to be ‘investigations of interventions in, or studies of, populations that are anticipated to have an effect on health or on health inequity at a population level.’ This definition of public health is intentionally broad to capture the wide range of NIHR public health research across prevention, health improvement, health protection, and healthcare services (both within and outside of NHS settings). This dataset does not reflect the NIHR’s total investment in public health research. The intention is to showcase a subset of the wider NIHR public health portfolio. This dataset includes NIHR directly funded research awards categorised as public health awards. This dataset does not include public health awards or projects funded by any of the three NIHR Research Schools or NIHR Health Protection Research Units.DisclaimersUsers of this dataset should acknowledge the broad definition of public health that has been used to develop the inclusion criteria for this dataset. Please note that this dataset is currently subject to a limited data quality review. We are working to improve our data collection methodologies. Please also note that some awards may also appear in other NIHR curated datasets. Further InformationFurther information on the individual awards shown in the dataset can be found on the NIHR’s Funding & Awards website here. NIHR HSDR Evidence Synthesis Teams and Rapid Evaluation Teams

This dataset contains information on the

projects conducted by the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research Programme’s Evidence Synthesis Teams, Rapid Evaluation Teams and National Evaluation Teams.

Evidence Synthesis Teams provide timely and contextualised access to the

best research evidence on topics of key importance to health and social care organisations such as the NHS. Their work mainly consists of scoping reviews, rapid reviews, systematic reviews and other evidence synthesis methods.

Rapid Evaluation Teams deploy rapidly to conduct evaluations of health and

social care service innovations over a short period of time (usually 6 to 12 months). National Evaluation Teams deploy in a similar way but conduct evaluations over 1-3 years. This dataset will be updated every six months, and the data in this edition is accurate as of April 2025.

    Description

This report and associated data set aims to better understand the joint palliative and end of life care research portfolio of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and Marie Curie. The portfolio analysis brings together data from two UK-based research funders and is intended to inform ongoing strategic efforts to address gaps in the current evidence base. The need for palliative care has been conservatively estimated to be between 69 and 90% of all deaths in high-income countries (Murtagh, 2014; Fantoni et. al., 2023). Yet, palliative and end of life care has been shown to be one of the lowest funded areas of healthcare research in the UK. The UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Health Research Classification System (HRCS) 2018 dataset shows that only 0.21% of all non-commercial health-related project and programme research funding is spent on research focusing on palliative and end of life care (UKCRC, 2020). This portfolio analysis draws upon two data sources: a publicly available dataset of health-related research grants or awards active in 2018 (UKCRC, 2020) and created a new dataset (https://nihr.opendatasoft.com/explore/dataset/palliative-and-end-of-life-care/table/) of related research grants and awards from NIHR and Marie Curie (2011 – 2018/19). Analysis found that: In 2018, NIHR was the largest funder of palliative and end of life care research in the UK (46%), followed by Marie Curie as the second-largest funder overall (34%) and the largest charitable funder. The majority of NIHR and Marie Curie awards were projects, with relatively few personal awards. There was variation in investment across the UK, with host organisations located in Northern Ireland and the South West of England receiving least funding, followed by the West and East Midlands. Most awards were associated with ‘generic health relevance’ rather than a particular disease or condition. Where specific conditions were addressed, most awards concentrated on care for people with cancer, followed by neurological (mostly dementia) and respiratory conditions. Only a small number of awards addressed frailty, multimorbidity, Stroke, Oral/Gastrointestinal, Renal, Urogenital and Cardiovascular conditions, or Mental Health. Apart from age, there was very little research addressing relevant palliative and end of life care research questions with respect to protected characteristics. This analysis can be used by funders and researchers to continue to support efforts to fill gaps in the evidence base, and in response both funders have issued further calls for research.

    Description

The NIHR invests significantly in centres of excellence, collaborations, services and facilities to support research in England. Collectively these form the NIHR research infrastructure. We award more than £606 million of funding per year to world leading NHS organisations and academic institutions with a proven, international track record in health and care research. The funding awards are significant multi-million-pound investments. Our significant and sustained research infrastructure funding supports the country’s leading experts in world-class research organisations. NIHR research infrastructure funding provides a platform to enable research, acting as a targeted and strategic investment to create an environment where early stage and applied research can thrive. Our research infrastructure provides research expertise, specialist facilities, a research delivery workforce and support services which all help to support and deliver the research we fund, and research funded by others. Research funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), medical research charities, the life sciences industry (biopharmaceuticals, medtech, genomics, diagnostics and digital health), and other relevant industries all benefit from the network of services and support that we provide. This is an NIHR research infrastructure dataset and excludes the Research Delivery Network (RDN). The dataset is accurate as of the end of the 2024/25 financial year and is updated annually. It shows studies supported by the Applied Health and Social Care Research Collaborations (ARCs), Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs), Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs), Medtech and In vitro diagnostics Co-operatives (MICs), Healthtech Research Centres (HRCs) which have replaced MICs from 2024/25 and Patient Safety Research Collaborations (PSRCs). Projects appear as duplicates if they have been reported by multiple Infrastructure Centres in multiple years. Using this dataset, users can search for projects that were supported by the abovementioned NIHR Infrastructure schemes by financial year.

Please note that this is not a complete dataset as commercially or otherwise sensitive projects have been withheld from it. Additionally, this dataset has been created to recognise the research infrastructure support that these studies have received and therefore it does not contain information about the support and funding received from other sources (e.g., other funding bodies or the life sciences industry).

    Description

The NIHR is one of the main funders of public health research in the UK. Public health research falls within the remit of a range of NIHR Directly Funded Research (Programmes and Training Awards), and NIHR Infrastructure Support. This Public Health Portfolio (Infrastructure Support) dataset contains NIHR infrastructure supported projects where funding is allocated to provide support to research. This research may not be NIHR funded. For more information about NIHR infrastructure, see the information page here. A separate Public Health Portfolio (Directly Funded Research - Programmes and Training Awards) dataset which you can find here, contains NIHR directly funded research, where the funding is allocated to an award holder or host organisation to carry out a specific piece of research or complete a training award. This Public Health Portfolio (Infrastructure Support) dataset includes NIHR infrastructure supported projects from the 2019/20 financial year onwards and is updated annually. Projects may appear as duplicates if they have been reported by multiple infrastructure centres and/or in multiple financial years. Users can search for NIHR infrastructure supported projects schemes by financial year. The dataset excludes the NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN).An agreed inclusion/exclusion criteria is used to categorise NIHR infrastructure supported projects as public health (see below). Infrastructure supported projects are not second level coded to the Public Health Outcomes Framework domains.Inclusion CriteriaThe NIHR Public Health Overview project team worked with colleagues across NIHR public health research to define the inclusion criteria for NIHR public health research. NIHR infrastructure supported projects are categorised as public health if they are determined to be ‘investigations of interventions in, or studies of, populations that are anticipated to have an effect on health or on health inequity at a population level.’ This definition of public health is intentionally broad to capture the wide range of NIHR public health research across prevention, health improvement, health protection, and healthcare services (both within and outside of NHS settings). This dataset does not reflect the NIHR’s total investment in public health research. The intention is to showcase a subset of the wider NIHR public health portfolio. This dataset does not include public health awards or projects funded by any of the three NIHR Research Schools. Therefore, awards from the NIHR Schools for Public Health, Primary Care and Social Care do not feature in this portfolio. You can find information on the projects funded by the three NIHR Research Schools here on NIHR Open Data. NIHR Public Health Policy Research Unit projects are also currently excluded from the dataset. DisclaimersUsers of this dataset should acknowledge the broad definition of public health that has been used to develop the inclusion criteria for this dataset. This caveat applies to all data within the dataset. Please note that this dataset is currently subject to a limited data quality review. We are working to improve our data collection methodologies. Please also note that some projects may also appear in other NIHR curated datasets. A proportion of the research summaries are identified by linking reported study IDs to external datasets. In fewer than 2% of projects the summary attached may be incorrect; as such, results should be screened to ensure the title matches the research summary. Description

Assistive technology research and development: annual statutory report on government-funded research to improve the lives of disabled and older people. This data supports the most recent published report (2024-2025) from the Department of Health and Social Care’s Parliamentary report collection. The funding data from last year's report, and all preceding (historical) reports, can be found in the attachments at the bottom of this page, along with the reporting criteria and the print and accessible versions of the current report. The current research for 2024-25 can be found on the table tab and includes AT focus areas, which can be browsed using the filter function on the left, as well as project details and links to the original research pages (where available). Some projects cover more than one focus area. Every year the focus areas are reviewed and updated to highlight the areas of research relevant to this report and there are currently have the following areas: ● Hearing impairment ● Prosthetics and Orthotics ● Wearable Devices ● Neurological and Cognitive Health ● Vision Impairment ● Communication and Speech ● Robotics ● Exercise and Rehabilitation ● Inclusivity and Accessibility ● Adaptive and Smart Homes ● Game-Based Training ● Learning Disabilities and Neurodiversity ● Mental and Social Health ● Mobility and Musculoskeletal Health ● Breathing and Sleep ● Carer and Support Training This dataset is intended to serve as supplementary material to the full statutory report. While the data table allows the exploration of individual projects and focus areas, the full report provides the vital analysis, context, and key findings necessary to fully understand the impact of AT research. Access to the full report is encouraged to gain a complete picture of the advancements in assistive technology research and their strategic importance to the UK’s future health and social care landscape. This year's report focuses on the core shifts in assistive technology research and the UK’s health plan, highlighting the government’s vision to provide better care in people’s own homes or closer to their communities and to address unmet healthcare needs. The full report provides essential context of how AT research is contributing to this vision, particularly in fostering more inclusive employment practices, improving travel and public infrastructure, and creating more inclusive experiences in venues such as cinemas and museums. The focus on inclusive practices is a key theme for this year's publication. The projects detailed in this dataset are the foundation of this progress, promoting a truly inclusive society that helps foster accessibility and independence for disabled and older people.

Further information on individual NIHR Research Programme’s decision making processes for funding health and social care research can be found here.Further information on NIHR’s investment in public health research can be found as follows:The NIHR is one of the main funders of public health research in the UK.
