    Description

    This dataset contains percent tree canopy cover (TCC) in 2021 for CONUS, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands at 30m resolution. The source dataset was created by the USDA Forest Service (USFS) and modified for the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). Raw data was downloaded from the MRLC site (Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium) and the raster layers from each geographic region were stitched together by members of the NatCap team. The dataset hosted here is in a Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF format with internal overviews. More information on the dataset hosted here can be found in the accompanying metadata (YML) file. The Science data are the initial annual model outputs that consist of two images: percent tree canopy cover (TCC) and standard error. These data are best suited for users who will carry out their own detailed statistical and uncertainty analyses on the dataset, and place lower priority on the visual appearance of the dataset for cartographic purposes. Datasets for the years 2008 through 2021 are available. The Science data were produced using a random forests regression algorithm. For standard error data, the initial standard error estimates that ranged from 0 to approximately 45 were multiplied by 100 to maintain data precision (e.g., 45 = 4500). Therefore, standard error estimates pixel values range from 0 to approximately 4500. The value 65534 represents the non-processing area mask where no cloud or cloud shadow-free data are available to produce an output, and 65535 represents the background value.     The National Land Cover Database 2016 (NLCD2016) percent tree canopy cover (TCC 2016) layer was produced through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium (www.mrlc.gov). The MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies, consisting of the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, NASA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One of the primary goals of the project was to generate a current, consistent, and seamless national land cover, percent tree canopy cover, and percent impervious cover at medium spatial resolution. TCC 2016 is the NLCD tree canopy cover dataset at medium spatial resolution (30 m). It was produced by the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC). The TCC 2016 dataset has two layers: percent tree canopy cover and standard error. For the tree canopy cover layer, the pixel values range from 0 to 100 percent. For the standard error layer, the pixel values range from 0 to 45 percent. The standard error represents the model uncertainty associated with the corresponding pixel in the tree canopy cover layer. The tree canopy cover layer was produced using a Random Forests' regression algorithm and the standard error layer was calculated from the variance of the canopy cover estimates from the random forest regression trees.This record was taken from the USDA Enterprise Data Inventory that feeds into the https://data.gov catalog.     This 30-meter resolution data set represents the tree canopy layer for the conterminous United States for the 2001 time period. The data have been arranged into four tiles to facilitate timely display and manipulation within a Geographic Information System, browse graphic: nlcd01-partition.jpg The National Land Cover Data Set for 2001 was produced through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. Datasets for the nominal years of 2011 and 2016 are available.

    The Cartographic products mask the initial model outputs to improve the visual appearance of the datasets. These data are best suited for users who prioritize visual appearance of the data for cartographic and illustrative purposes. Datasets for the nominal years of 2011 and 2016 are available.

    The NLCD data are the result of further processing of the masked data. The goal was to generate three coordinated components. The components are (1) a dataset for the nominal year of 2011, (2) a dataset for the nominal year of 2016, and (3) a dataset that captures the change in canopy cover between the two nominal years of 2011 and 2016. For the NLCD data, the three components meet the criterion of 2011 TCC + change in TCC = 2016 TCC. These NLCD data are best suited for users who require a coordinated three-component data stack where each pixels values meet the criterion of 2011 TCC + change in TCC = 2016 TCC. Datasets for the nominal years of 2011 and 2016 are available, as well as a dataset that captures the change (loss or gain) in canopy cover between those two nominal years of 2011 and 2016, in areas where change was identified.

One of the primary goals of the project was to generate a current, consistent, and seamless national land cover, percent tree canopy cover, and percent impervious cover at medium spatial resolution. TCC 2011 is the NLCD tree canopy cover dataset at medium spatial resolution (30 m). It was produced by the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC). The TCC 2011 dataset has two layers: percent tree canopy cover and standard error. For the tree canopy cover layer, the pixel values range from 0 to 100 percent. For the standard error layer, the pixel values range from 0 to 45 percent. The standard error represents the model uncertainty associated with the corresponding pixel in the tree canopy cover layer. The NLCD 2001 was created by partitioning the U.S. into mapping zones. A total of 66 mapping zones were delineated within the conterminous U.S. based on ecoregion and geographical characteristics, edge matching features and the size requirement of Landsat mosaics. The tree canopy layer for Idaho is comprised of mapping zones 08, 09, 10, 18, 21, 16, and 17 which encompass whole or portions of several states including the state of Idaho.     The USDA Forest Service (USFS) builds two versions of percent tree canopy cover data, in order to serve needs of multiple user communities. These datasets encompass conterminous United States (CONUS), Coastal Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (PRUSVI). The two versions of data within the v2021-4 TCC product suite include: The initial model outputs referred to as the Science data; And a modified version built for the National Land Cover Database and referred to as NLCD data. The Science data are the initial annual model outputs that consist of two images: percent tree canopy cover (TCC) and standard error. These data are best suited for users who will carry out their own detailed statistical and uncertainty analyses on the dataset, and place lower priority on the visual appearance of the dataset for cartographic purposes. Datasets for the years 2008 through 2021 are available. The Science data were produced using a random forests regression algorithm. For standard error data, the initial standard error estimates that ranged from 0 to approximately 45 were multiplied by 100 to maintain data precision (e.g., 45 = 4500). Therefore, standard error estimates pixel values range from 0 to approximately 4500. The value 65534 represents the non-processing area mask where no cloud or cloud shadow-free data are available to produce an output, and 65535 represents the background value.     The National Land Cover Database products are created through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. Previously, NLCD consisted of three major data releases based on a 10-year cycle. These include a circa 1992 conterminous U.S. land cover dataset with one thematic layer (NLCD 1992), a circa 2001 50-state/Puerto Rico updated U.S. land cover database (NLCD 2001) with three layers including thematic land cover, percent imperviousness, and percent tree canopy, and a 1992/2001 Land Cover Change Retrofit Product. With these national data layers, there is often a 5-year time lag between the image capture date and product release. In some areas, the land cover can undergo significant change during production time, resulting in products that may be perpetually out of date. To address these issues, this circa 2006 NLCD land cover product (NLCD 2006) was conceived to meet user community needs for more frequent land cover monitoring (moving to a 5-year cycle) and to reduce the production time between image capture and product release. NLCD 2006 is designed to provide the user both updated land cover data and additional information that can be used to identify the pattern, nature, and magnitude of changes occurring between 2001 and 2006 for the conterminous United States at medium spatial resolution. For NLCD 2006, there are 3 primary data products: 1) NLCD 2006 Land Cover map; 2) NLCD 2001/2006 Change Pixels labeled with the 2006 land cover class; and 3) NLCD 2006 Percent Developed Imperviousness. Four additional data products were developed to provide supporting documentation and to provide information for land cover change analysis tasks: 4) NLCD 2001/2006 Percent Developed Imperviousness Change; 5) NLCD 2001/2006 Maximum Potential Change derived from the raw spectral change analysis; 6) NLCD 2001/2006 From-To Change pixels; and 7) NLCD 2006 Path/Row Index vector file showing the footprint of Landsat scene pairs used to derive 2001/2006 spectral change with change pair acquisition dates and scene identification numbers included in the attribute table. In addition to the 2006 data products listed in the paragraph above, two of the original release NLCD 2001 data products have been revised and reissued. Generation of NLCD 2006 data products helped to identify some update issues in the NLCD 2001 land cover and percent developed imperviousness data products. These issues were evaluated and corrected, necessitating a reissue of NLCD 2001 data products (NLCD 2001 Version 2.0) as part of the NLCD 2006 release. A majority of NLCD 2001 updates occur in coastal mapping zones where NLCD 2001 was published prior to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) 2001 land cover products. NOAA C-CAP 2001 land cover has now been seamlessly integrated with NLCD 2001 land cover for all coastal zones. NLCD 2001 percent developed imperviousness was also updated as part of this process. Land cover maps, derivatives and all associated documents are considered "provisional" until a formal accuracy assessment can be conducted. The NLCD 2006 is created on a path/row basis and mosaicked to create a seamless national product.     The National Land Cover Database products are created through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. The success of NLCD over nearly two decades is credited to the continuing collaborative spirit of the agencies that make up the MRLC. NLCD 2011 is the most up-to-date iteration of the National Land Cover Database, the definitive Landsat-based, 30-meter resolution land cover database for the Nation. The data in NLCD 2011 are completely integrated with NLCD 2001 (2011 Edition, amended 2014) and NLCD 2006 (2011 Edition, amended 2014).     Tree Canopy estimates for the Baltimore MSA from the 2001 NLCD. For NLCD 2001, a strategy for estimating tree canopy density at a spatial resolution of 30 m was developed (Huang et al., 2001). This strategy is similar to the method used to derive imperviousness, and is based on empirical relationships between tree canopy density and Landsat data, established using regression tree techniques. Several one-meter digital orthophoto quadrangles for each Landsat path/row are required to derive reference tree canopy density data needed for calibrating the relationships between canopy density and Landsat spectral data. As with the imperviousness data layer, the regression tree algorithm Cubist is used to develop the models and output a per-pixel estimate of tree canopy for all pixels. To aid the utility of the canopy estimate as an independent data layer, a non-forest mask is created to mask obvious non-forest pixels from the prediction. This procedure quantifies spatial distribution of tree canopy as a continuous variable from 1 to100%, and will be available as an independent product of NLCD 2001. One of the primary goals of the project is to generate a current, consistent, seamless, and accurate National Land cover Database (NLCD) circa 2001 for the United States at medium spatial resolution. For a detailed definition and discussion on MRLC and the NLCD 2001 products, refer to Homer et al. (2003) and http://www.mrlc.gov/mrlc2k.asp . The NLCD 2001 was created by partitioning the U.S. into mapping zones. A total of 66 mapping zones were delineated within the conterminous U.S. based on ecoregion and geographical characteristics, edgematching features and the size requirement of Landsat mosaics. Mapping zone 60 encompasses whole or portions of several states in the mid-Atlantic region, including the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Questions about the NLCD mapping zone 60 can be directed to the NLCD 2001 land cover mapping team at the USGS EROS Data Center (EDC), Sioux Falls, SD (605) 594-6151 or mrlc@usgs.gov. This is part of a collection of 221 Baltimore Ecosystem Study metadata records that point to a geodatabase. The geodatabase is available online and is considerably large. Upon request, and under certain arrangements, it can be shipped on media, such as a usb hard drive. The geodatabase is roughly 51.4 Gb in size, consisting of 4,914 files in 160 folders. Although this metadata record and the others like it are not rich with attributes, it is nonetheless made available because the data that it represents could be indeed useful. The USDA Forest Service (USFS) builds two versions of percent tree canopy cover (TCC) data to serve needs of multiple user communities. These datasets encompass the conterminous United States (CONUS), Coastal Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (PRUSVI). The two versions of data within the v2021-4 TCC product suite include: - The raw model outputs referred to as the annual Science data; and - A modified version built for the National Land Cover Database referred to as NLCD data.
