The 2022 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. County subdivisions are the primary divisions of counties and their equivalent entities for the reporting of Census Bureau data. They include legally-recognized minor civil divisions (MCDs) and statistical census county divisions (CCDs), and unorganized territories. In MCD states where no MCD exists or no MCD is defined, the Census Bureau creates statistical unorganized territories to complete coverage. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas are covered by county subdivisions. The generalized boundaries of legal MCDs are based on those as of January 1, 2022, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The generalized boundaries of all CCDs, delineated in 21 states, are based on those as reported as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2020 Census.

A hydrogeologic unit map was created for Wake County, North Carolina by grouping geologic map units from Clark and others, 2004 based on their water-bearing potential. The water-bearing potential of the units was determined from rock origin, composition, and texture as described in Daniel (1989) and Daniel and Payne (1990) for the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces of North Carolina. A layer file is also included to provide the map symbology used in the report.

The North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program, through FEMA's Cooperating Technical State (CTS) Initiative, is conducting flood hazard analyses and producing updated, digital FIRM panels for all North Carolina communities. Additional information regarding the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program and the data collected during the mapping process are available at www.ncfloodmaps.com. The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. A task force of officials from state, local, and federal government agencies was convened by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to discuss the designation of wind energy areas in federal waters off the coast of North Carolina. The task force helps minimize the potential for significant conflicts with offshore wind farm construction and operations. Information needs include data on existing ocean uses like military operation areas, marine transportation and navigation, important fishing areas, sensitive habitat, and viewsheds. MarineCadastre.gov, a joint BOEM and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration initiative providing authoritative data to meet the needs of the offshore energy and marine planning communities, worked with the North Carolina Task Force to develop this map, which includes many of the data layers being used in their decision-making process. This map service presents spatial information about MarineCadastre.gov services across the United States and Territories in the Web Mercator projection. The service was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), but may contain data and information from a variety of data sources, including non-NOAA data. Broadband Serviceable Locations (BSLs) that are eligible for funding through the NC Completing Access to Broadband (CAB) Program. Eligible locations are determined by analyzing the availability of broadband as reported by internet providers to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) through their Broadband Data Collection (BDC). Locations are categorized into service levels in the data as:No Service – Locations with no reported service from Fiber, Cable, DSL, Licensed Fixed Wireless, or Licensed-by-Rule Fixed Wireless providers at any speed.Unserved Locations – Locations without access to internet service of at least 25mb/s download and 3mb/s upload speeds (25/3) and with low latency. Locations which are only served by DSL, Licensed-by-Rule Terrestrial Fixed Wireless, Unlicensed Fixed Wireless, or Licensed Fixed Wireless over mobile networks at any speed are also considered unserved.Underserved Locations – Locations with access to internet service of at least 25mb/s download and 3mb/s upload speeds, but less than 100mb/s Download and 20mb/s Upload speeds (100/20). Locations with service greater than 25/3 but are served with technology other than Cable and Fiber are also considered underserved.Participating counties may choose to prioritize certain geographic areas, within its county geographic boundaries, as areas to receive priority for CAB project deployments. Those counties that have prioritized certain locations for CAB applications will have those rankings listed in the "county_priority_rank" field in the data table with values of 1 being the highest priority locations, 2 being the next highest priority locations, and so on. Locations with a value of NULL have not been prioritized by the county. A county with all locations containing a value of NULL have either not become active projects or have not prioritized any areas in the respective county.

The aggregated parcel dataset includes all 100 counties in North Carolina plus lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The source geometry is retained as published by individual county data producers. This dataset includes attributes such as ownership, area in acres, assessed value, and other core cadastral attributes. There are two types of urban areas: urbanized areas (UAs) that contain 50,000 or more people and urban clusters (UCs) that contain at least 2,500 people, but fewer than 50,000 people (except in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam which each contain urban clusters with populations greater than 50,000).
