The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. In the spring of 2017, the Commonwealth of Virginia, through the Virginia Geographic Information Network Division (herein referred to as VGIN) of the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) contracted with Fugro Geospatial, Inc. to provide aerial data acquisition, ground control, aerial triangulation and development of statewide ortho quality DEM and digital orthophotography data. The Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) update project is divided into three collection phases: In 2017, Fugro flew the eastern third of Virginia at one foot resolution, with options for localities and other interested parties to upgrade resolution or purchase other optional products through the state contract. The middle third of Virginia will be flown in 2018 and the western third in 2019. Ortho products are 1-foot resolution statewide with upgrades to 6-inch resolution tiles and 3-inch resolution tiles in various regions within the project area. The Virginia Base Mapping project encompasses the entire land area of the Commonwealth of Virginia over 4 years. The State boundary is buffered by 1000'. Coastal areas of the State bordering the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay are buffered by 1000' or the extent of man-made features extending from shore. These data were created as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management's efforts to create an online mapping viewer called the Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer. It depicts potential sea level rise and its associated impacts on the nation's coastal areas. The purpose of the mapping viewer is to provide coastal managers and scientists with a preliminary look at sea level rise (slr) and coastal flooding impacts. The viewer is a screening-level tool that uses nationally consistent data sets and analyses. Data and maps provided can be used at several scales to help gauge trends and prioritize actions for different scenarios. Street centerline was originally developed from the road features on the County's 1:2400 base map. Both address range and a link to street names are included as data attributes. The current data is collected from recorded plats in DXF format or is digitized from plats. The data covers the entire County as well as the incorporated Towns. Purpose: The street centerline coverage was originally developed to support addressing. Fire & Rescue Services and the Sheriff's Office use the address range information for Emergency 911 dispatching; it is also used to update U.S. Census Bureau Tiger data in support of the decennial census. Supplemental Information: Centerline data are maintained from plats and site plans prepared by engineering and surveying firms. Although street centerline is the most current of the County's street data, deviation in construction after plat submittal and recordation may cause centerline to differ from similar County layer, road casing. Centerline contains the most current data; road casing is spatially more accurate because it is updated photogrammetrically. These data are not intended to be used for local surveys or at a scale larger than 1:2400. Data are stored in the corporate ArcSDE Geodatabase as a feature class. The Virginia Scenic Rivers Program was enabled by the Virginia Scenic Rivers Act of 1970. Within Loudoun County are two Virginia-designated scenic rivers - Catoctin Creek from Waterford to the confluence of the Potomac, and Goose Creek from the confluence of the north and south prongs near Linden to the confluence of the Potomac. These creeks are represented in the Loudoun County GIS using the base map drainage data, which is collected via a planimetric update process from aerial photography and processed for a cartographic representation at 1:2400 Scale, and are mapped to National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS).
