    Description

    Connectivity describes how well a landscape facilitates or impedes the movement of animals. Maximizing connectivity is a common management goal, especially for large mammals like moose (Alces americanus americanus) that occupy large home ranges and have the capacity to move long distances. Moose in the northeastern US (encompassing the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) represent a management priority and are expected to decline due to the near-term impacts of climate change and landscape development that will alter the distribution of habitats across the region. Large-scale maps of moose connectivity are unavailable but would provide an important resource for management planning to improve moose persistence in the landscape. We used an omnidirectional circuit-theory approach to model and map moose connectivity across the six states in the northeastern US. The approach involved integrating a distribution map developed from an occurrence model and a resistance map developed from expert opinion data, along with home range information and current landcover maps to depict expected movement flow. The data release includes 1 CSV file that contains expert-elicited responses regarding moose occurrence and resistence to movement. The release also includes 6 rasters (1 and 2) the Omniscape inputs files named "source.tif" and "resistance.tif"; (3) the connectivity raster using a 0-threshold "source" input named "cumulative_current_map_raw0.tif"; (4) the Omniscape connectivity raster using a 0.2-threshold "source" input named "cumulative_current_map_raw02.tif"; (5) and (6) the respective normalized connectivity rasters, named "normalized_map_crop0.tif" and "normalized_map_crop02.tif". The latter two rasters can be categorized into flow categories if desired: impeded (areas with less current than in a resistance-free landscape), diffuse (areas with as much current as a resistance-free landscape), intensified (areas with more current than a resistance-free landscape), and channelized (areas with much more current than a resistance-free landscape).

    Description

    Two maps, compiled at 1:1,000,000 scale, depict mean annual runoff, precipitation, and evapotranspiration in the part of the United States east of Cleveland, Ohio and north of the southern limit of glaciation. The maps are mutually consistent in that runoff equals precipitation minus evapotranspiration everywhere. The runoff map is based on records of streamflow from 503 watersheds in the United States and southernmost Canada, adjusted to represent 1951-80 and supplemented by records of precipitation at 459 stations. Precipitation at each station was partitioned into point estimates of runoff and evapotranspiration, which were constrained such that the evapotranspiration estimates varied smoothly across the region and decreased with increasing latitude and altitude, and the runoff estimates were consistent with measured runoff from nearby watersheds. A point estimate of runoff was allowed to equal mean runoff in a nearby watershed, or to be somewhat higher (or lower) if a compensating departure from mean watershed runoff could be inferred in distant parts of the watershed on the basis of altitude or regional trends. Then, precipitation contours were drawn to parallel runoff contours but differ from them by the magnitude of nearby estimates of evapotranspiration. These maps may slightly underrepresent mean precipitation and evapotranspiration in areas of high relief because most precipitation stations in such areas are in valleys.     The Digital Geologic-GIS Map of the Rito Alto Peak Quadrangle, and northeastern part of the Mirage Quadrangle, Colorado is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) an ESRI file geodatabase (rial_geology.gdb), and a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro 3.X map file (.mapx) file (rial_geology.mapx) and individual Pro 3.X layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer). Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI shapefile format. Contact Stephanie O'Meara (see contact information below) to acquire the GIS data in these GIS data formats. In addition to the GIS data and supporting GIS files, three additional files comprise a GRI digital geologic-GIS dataset or map: 1.) a readme file (grsa_geology_gis_readme.pdf), 2.) the GRI ancillary map information document (.pdf) file (grsa_geology.pdf) which contains geologic unit descriptions, as well as other ancillary map information and graphics from the source map(s) used by the GRI in the production of the GRI digital geologic-GIS data for the park, and 3.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (rial_geology_metadata_faq.pdf).     Description

    The results of a new EGS geothermal resource assessment of the eastern US, focused on the Northeastern US and based on use of Bottom Hole Temperatures (BHT), are summarized. A total of 5,800 heat flow points are now available for the area as opposed to the 323 used to produce the 2004 Geothermal Map of North America. The challenge is determining heat flow and subsurface temperature in areas where no data or limited conventional heat flow data exist in the previous assessments (most of the eastern 2/3 of the US). The techniques used to allow large scale use of BHT data for heat flow calculations are described. The process for the temperature-at-depth calculation is updated to better accommodate the use of BHT data. The geophysical data are also utilized as an ancillary predictor to the heat flow determination process in areas with limited or no thermal data. This study uses the same process to calculate heat storage when the thermal properties and temperature at depth are known described in the Future of Geothermal Energy report. Heat-in-place values have been updated for the northeastern US. Because of the higher data density the new temperature at depth maps show more localized temperature anomalies then the older maps and are a first step in the identification of site specific geothermal anomalies for further research and development. An important result is the identification and delineation of a significant thermal anomaly in eastern West Virginia.
