    Description

    In 2023, 25 million people in the United States had no health insurance. The share of Americans without health insurance saw a steady increase from 2015 to 2019 before starting to decline in 2020 to 2023. Factors like the implementation of Medicaid expansion in additional states and growth in private health insurance coverage led to the decline in uninsured population, despite the economic challenges due to the pandemic in 2020. Positive impact of Affordable Care Act In the U.S. there are public and private forms of health insurance, as well as social welfare programs such as Medicaid and programs just for veterans such as CHAMPVA. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted in 2010, which dramatically reduced the share of uninsured Americans, though there’s still room for improvement. In spite of its success in providing more Americans with health insurance, ACA has had an almost equal number of proponents and opponents since its introduction, though the share of Americans in favor of it has risen since mid-2017 to the majority. Persistent disparity among ethnic groups The share of uninsured people is higher in certain demographic groups. For instance, Hispanics continue to be the ethnic group with the highest rate of uninsured people, even after ACA. Meanwhile the share of uninsured White and Asian people is lower than the national average.

    This layer contains 2010-2014 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data, and contains estimates and margins of error. The layer shows health insurance coverage sex and race by age group. This is shown by tract, county, and state boundaries. There are also additional calculated attributes related to this topic, which can be mapped or used within analysis. Sums may add to more than the total, as people can be in multiple race groups (for example, Hispanic and Black). Later vintages of this layer have a different age group for children that includes age 18. This layer is symbolized to show the percent of population with no health insurance coverage. To see the full list of attributes available in this service, go to the "Data" tab, and choose "Fields" at the top right. This map shows where those with no health insurance live. Map opens in Houston, TX. Use the bookmarks or search to see other cities. Zoom out to see map render data for counties and states.


    Size of symbol depicts the count of those who are uninsured, color depicts the percent of those who are uninsured. Pop-up displays percentage by age group.

    This map uses these hosted feature layers containing the most recent American Community Survey data. These layers are part of the ArcGIS Living Atlas, and are updated every year when the American Community Survey releases new estimates, so values in the map always reflect the newest data available.

    The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a federal statute enacted with a goal of increasing the quality and affordability of health insurance. Through a web service, CMS sends applicant information to SSA. SSA matches applicant data to various SSA data sources and provides a response back to CMS, based on the results of the matches. The results of these matches help CMS and states determine an applicant's eligibility and cost for health insurance. SSA provides results to CMS for matches of SSN, Name, and DOB against the Numident. SSA may also provide incarceration data from PUPS, Title II income from the MBR, and quarters of coverage data from the MEF.

    Description

    After May 3, 2024, this dataset and webpage will no longer be updated because hospitals are no longer required to report data on COVID-19 hospital admissions, and hospital capacity and occupancy data, to HHS through CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network. Data voluntarily reported to NHSN after May 1, 2024, will be available starting May 10, 2024, at COVID Data Tracker Hospitalizations.

    This report shows data completeness information on data submitted by hospitals for the previous week, from Friday to Thursday. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requires all hospitals licensed to provide 24-hour care to report certain data necessary to the all-of-America COVID-19 response. The report includes the following information for each hospital:

    • The percentage of mandatory fields reported.
    • The number of days in the preceding week where 100% of the fields were completed.
    • Whether a hospital is required to report on Wednesdays only.
    • A cell for each required field with the number of days that specific field was reported for the week.
    Hospitals are key partners in the Federal response to COVID-19, and this report is published to increase transparency into the type and amount of data being successfully reported to the U.S. Government.

    This layer shows the percentage of people without health insurance in the U.S. by state and county, from American Community Survey 5-year estimates: 2011-2015 (Table GCT2701). The map switches from state data to county data as the map zooms in. The national average was 13.0%, down from approximately 20% in 2005.A person’s ability to access health services has a profound effect on every aspect of his or her health. Many Americans do not have a primary care provider (PCP) or health center where they can receive regular medical services. People without medical insurance are more likely to lack a usual source of medical care, such as a PCP, and are more likely to skip routine medical care due to costs, increasing their risk for serious and disabling health conditions. When they do access health services, they are often burdened with large medical bills and out-of-pocket expenses. Increasing access to both routine medical care and medical insurance are vital steps in improving the health of all Americans.

    Data Note from the Census:
    Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error. The value shown here is the 90 percent margin of error. The margin of error can be interpreted as providing a 90 percent probability that the interval defined by the estimate minus the margin of error and the estimate plus the margin of error (the lower and upper confidence bounds) contains the true value. In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to nonsampling error (for a discussion of nonsampling variability, see Accuracy of the Data). The effect of nonsampling error is not represented in these tables.

    Data Processing Notes:
    • Boundaries come from the US Census TIGER geodatabases, specifically, the National Sub-State Geography Database (named tlgdb(year)a_us_substategeo.gdb). Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census. These are Census boundaries with water and/or coastlines erased for cartographic and mapping purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2020 Areal Hydrography boundaries offered by TIGER. Water bodies and rivers which are 50 million square meters or larger (mid to large sized water bodies) are erased from the tract level boundaries, as well as additional important features. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 2020 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. These are erased to more accurately portray the coastlines and Great Lakes. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters).
    • The States layer contains 52 records - all US states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico
    • Census tracts with no population that occur in areas of water, such as oceans, are removed from this data

    In 2023, 25 million people in the United States had no health insurance. The share of Americans without health insurance saw a steady increase from 2015 to 2019 before starting to decline in 2020 to 2023. Factors like the implementation of Medicaid expansion in additional states and growth in private health insurance coverage led to the decline in uninsured population, despite the economic challenges due to the pandemic in 2020. Positive impact of Affordable Care Act In the U.S. there are public and private forms of health insurance, as well as social welfare programs such as Medicaid and programs just for veterans such as CHAMPVA. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted in 2010, which dramatically reduced the share of uninsured Americans, though there’s still room for improvement. In spite of its success in providing more Americans with health insurance, ACA has had an almost equal number of proponents and opponents since its introduction, though the share of Americans in favor of it has risen since mid-2017 to the majority. Persistent disparity among ethnic groups The share of uninsured people is higher in certain demographic groups. For instance, Hispanics continue to be the ethnic group with the highest rate of uninsured people, even after ACA. Meanwhile the share of uninsured White and Asian people is lower than the national average.
