    While the standard image of the nuclear family with two parents and 2.5 children has persisted in the American imagination, the number of births in the U.S. has steadily been decreasing since 1990, with about 3.6 million babies born in 2023. In 1990, this figure was 4.16 million. Birth and replacement rates A country’s birth rate is defined as the number of live births per 1,000 inhabitants, and it is this particularly important number that has been decreasing over the past few decades. The declining birth rate is not solely an American problem, with EU member states showing comparable rates to the U.S. Additionally, each country has what is called a “replacement rate.” The replacement rate is the rate of fertility needed to keep a population stable when compared with the death rate. In the U.S., the fertility rate needed to keep the population stable is around 2.1 children per woman, but this figure was at 1.67 in 2022. Falling birth rates Currently, there is much discussion as to what exactly is causing the birth rate to decrease in the United States. There seem to be several factors in play, including longer life expectancies, financial concerns (such as the economic crisis of 2008), and an increased focus on careers, all of which are causing people to wait longer to start a family. How international governments will handle falling populations remains to be seen, but what is clear is that the declining birth rate is a multifaceted problem without an easy solution.

    In Sweden, the fertility rate reached the lowest point in a ten-year period in 2022. The fertility rate is defined as the number of children that would be born or are likely to be born to a woman if she lives to the end of her reproductive years, and in 2022 it was down to 1.52 children per woman in Sweden. By comparison, the Faroe Islands had the highest fertility rate in Europe at 2.71.

    Lowest crude rate of birth in thirteen years

    As with the fertility rate, the crude birth rate in Sweden was at its lowest point for several years in 2022. It is defined as the number of live births in a given geographical area in a given time period, per thousand mid-year population, and it was down to 10 in 2022, which was the lowest number in the past decade.

    Description

    This dataset contains counts of live births for California counties based on information entered on birth certificates. Final counts are derived from static data and include out of state births to California residents, whereas provisional counts are derived from incomplete and dynamic data. Provisional counts are based on the records available when the data was retrieved and may not represent all births that occurred during the time period.

    The final data tables include both births that occurred in California regardless of the place of residence (by occurrence) and births to California residents (by residence), whereas the provisional data table only includes births that occurred in California regardless of the place of residence (by occurrence). The data are reported as totals, as well as stratified by parent giving birth's age, parent giving birth's race-ethnicity, and birth place type. See temporal coverage for more information on which strata are available for which years.

    Between 2010 and 2023, the number of births in Italy decreased constantly. In 2010, 550,000 births were registered in the country, while in 2022 the figure dropped to less than 400,000, with a forecast for 2023 of only around 380,000 new babies. The largest number of births nationwide was registered in the North Italian region of Lombardy, with approximately 58,900 infants born in 2021. Indeed, Lombardy is the most populous region of the country. Birth rates Data on birth rates in Italy reveal that Lombardy is only fifth in terms of infants born per 1,000 inhabitants. In 2023, Trentino-South Tyrol recorded the highest birth rate nationwide, with 7.9 newborns per 1,000 inhabitants. Three Southern regions followed in the ranking: Campania, Sicily, and Calabria. In fact, in 2023, the South was the macro-region with the largest birth rate in Italy. Aging population Due to the lower birth rates, the Italian population is aging fast. According to estimates for 2024, the average age in Italy is 46.6 years, 3.2 years older than in 2010. This figure is estimated to increase further in the upcoming years. Projections made in 2019 suggested that the median age will reach 50.8 years in 2030. Afterward, the average age of Italians might reach 53.6 years by 2050.

Demographic development in China In 2022, the Chinese population decreased for the first time in decades, and population decline is expected to accelerate in the upcoming years. China’s aging population The Chinese society is aging rapidly and facing a serious demographic shift towards older age groups. The median age of China’s population has increased massively from about ** years in 1970 to **** years in 2020 and is projected to rise continuously until 2080. In 2020, approximately **** percent of the Chinese were 60 years and older, a figure that is forecast to rise as high as ** percent by 2060. This shift in demographic development will increase social and elderly support expenditure of the society as a whole.     This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2022-23, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2023. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. In April 2019 the MSDS transitioned to a new version of the dataset. This version, MSDS v2.0, is an update that introduced a new structure and content - including clinical terminology, in order to meet current clinical practice and incorporate new requirements. It is designed to meet requirements that resulted from the National Maternity Review, which led to the publication of the Better Births report in February 2016. This is the fourth publication of data from MSDS v2.0 and data from 2019-20 onwards is not directly comparable to data from previous years. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with breakdowns including the baby's first feed type, birthweight, place of birth, and breastfeeding activity; and the mothers' ethnicity and age at booking. There is also data available in a separate file on breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks. The count of Total Babies includes both live and still births, and previous changes to how Total Babies and Total Deliveries were calculated means that comparisons between 2019-20 MSDS data and later years should be made with care. Information on how all measures are constructed can be found in the HES Metadata and MSDS Metadata files provided below. In this publication we have also included an interactive Power BI dashboard to enable users to explore key NHS Maternity Statistics measures. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care. This report will also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England.     Description

    Connecticut's Birth to Three System (B23) supports families with infants and toddlers that have developmental delays to learn new ways to make everyday activities enhance the child's development. Birth to Three is administered pursuant to Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Once families with children below age 3 are referred, the child's development is evaluated for eligibility, and if eligible the family can receive supports until the child no longer has delays or until the child turns age 3. Because an infant can be referred within days of being born, a family may be enrolled for almost three full years. Connecticut's Birth to Three System publishes data annually by the fiscal and calendar year and longitudinally by birth cohort. CTData.org carries both sets of data, here and in 'Birth To Three Annual Data'. Birth cohort data looks at all children born in a particular year and tracks whether the family received B23 support. For example, the latest full year available in this dataset is for those children born in 2013 since they turned age 3 sometime in 2016. The 2013 data will tell you how many children there were whose families received support at some point during the first three years of the child's life. CTData calculates several indicators using total number of births in a town. This provides users with a general idea of the relative number of children in the community eligible for services. Using births is not perfect since families move in and out of town so it should not be used as an exact figure but as a general reference point. Below are how the indicators are calculated: % Referrals = Number referred divided by total number of births % Evaluations = Number evaluated divided by total number of births % Eligible = Number eligible divided by total number of births % Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) = Number with IFSP divided by total number of births % Served = Number served divided by total number of births % Exited to Early Childhood Special Education = Number exited to early childhood special education divided by total number of births 'Referred that are Evaluated' represents the percent of children that were evaluated out of the total number of children referred to the Birth to Three System. 'Evaluated that are Eligible' represents the percent of children who were deemed eligible out of the total number of children that were evaluated. 'Eligible that Recieve IFSP' represents the percent of children whose family recieved an Individual Family Service Plan out of the total number of eligible children.

    This table counts all births (live and still) which occurred in Welsh units. It does not include home or ambulance births but does include births to non-Welsh residents which took place in Wales. The National Community Child Health Database consists of anonymised records for all children born, resident or treated in Wales and born after 1987. The database combines data from local Community Child Health System databases which are held by local health boards. From 1st April 2019 health service provision for residents of Bridgend local authority moved from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg to Cwm Taf. For more information see the joint statement from Cwm Taf and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Boards (see weblinks). The health board names have changed with Cwm Taf University Health Board becoming Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board becoming Swansea Bay University Health Board. Data for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg and Cwm Taf are available for previous years in this table by selecting the tick boxes in the Area drop-down box.

    Description

    This statistical release makes available the most recent monthly data on NHS-funded maternity services in England, using data submitted to the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). This is the latest report from the newest version of the data set, MSDS.v.2, which has been in place since April 2019. The new data set was a significant change which added support for key policy initiatives such as continuity of carer, as well as increased flexibility through the introduction of new clinical coding. This was a major change, so data quality and coverage initially reduced from the levels seen in earlier publications. MSDS.v.2 data completeness improved over time, and we are looking at ways of supporting further improvements. This publication also includes the National Maternity Dashboard, which can be accessed via the link below. Data derived from SNOMED codes is used in some measures such as those for birthweight, and others will follow in later publications. SNOMED data is also included in some of the published Clinical Quality Improvement Metrics (CQIMs), where rules have been applied to ensure measure rates are calculated only where data quality is high enough. System suppliers are at different stages of development and delivery to trusts. In some cases, this has limited the aspects of data that can be submitted in the MSDS. This month, for the first time, this publication contains a new Clinical Quality Improvement Metric (CQIM) called CQIMReadmissions. This new metric reports the number of babies born in hospital then discharged home, who were then readmitted to hospital while still under 30 days old. This is supported by five new data quality metrics to ensure we only publish CQIMReadmissions figures where the underlying data is of sufficient completeness and quality. The new data quality metrics are CQIMDQ46 to CQIMDQ50. Further information about this new readmissions metric can found in this publication’s Data Quality Statement. This new data can be found in the Measures file available for download and in the CQIM and CQIM+ pages in the National Maternity Dashboard, and further information on the new metrics can be found in the accompanying Metadata file. To help Trusts understand to what extent they met the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS) Data Quality Criteria for Safety Action 2, we have been producing a CNST Scorecard Dashboard showing trust performance against this criteria. This dashboard has been updated following the release of CNST Y6 criteria, and can be accessed via the link below.     This dataset shows those born in the Canton of Basel-Stadt by gender, nationality, residential district and date of birth. The data will be updated daily, taking into account only births that date back at least 15 days. Due to subsequent notifications, changes to already published values can occur at any time. In the data of the current year and until about July also in those of the previous year, except for the liveborns, the stillborns are also taken into account, because the indication of viability is only available in July of the following year. In recent years, only liveborns are taken into account. The number of children born together (multiple births) is also only available in July of the following year. For methodological reasons, the values published here may differ from those in cantonal public statistics: In the latter, post-reported births are collected for four months, after which the figures are considered definitive. Reports received later will be counted in the last month not yet completed. In this record, they are counted in the month of the date of birth.For reasons of privacy, more attributes can be published in the monthly record than in the present dataset. Description

While the standard image of the nuclear family with two parents and 2.5 children has persisted in the American imagination, the number of births in the U.S. has steadily been decreasing since 1990, with about 3.6 million babies born in 2023. In 1990, this figure was 4.16 million. Birth and replacement rates A country’s birth rate is defined as the number of live births per 1,000 inhabitants, and it is this particularly important number that has been decreasing over the past few decades. The declining birth rate is not solely an American problem, with EU member states showing comparable rates to the U.S. Additionally, each country has what is called a “replacement rate.” The replacement rate is the rate of fertility needed to keep a population stable when compared with the death rate. In the U.S., the fertility rate needed to keep the population stable is around 2.1 children per woman, but this figure was at 1.67 in 2022. Falling birth rates Currently, there is much discussion as to what exactly is causing the birth rate to decrease in the United States. There seem to be several factors in play, including longer life expectancies, financial concerns (such as the economic crisis of 2008), and an increased focus on careers, all of which are causing people to wait longer to start a family. How international governments will handle falling populations remains to be seen, but what is clear is that the declining birth rate is a multifaceted problem without an easy solution.
