    Description

MyHospitals provides performance information for public and private hospitals in Australia. You can also compare the performance of these hospitals and find information about hospitals near you. The annual average number of beds available to be used by an admitted patient was grouped into the following categories: fewer than 50, 50-100, 100-200, 200-500 and more than 500. These data are as reported by states and territories to the NPHED, and are referred to in statistical publications (including Australian hospital statistics) as 'average available beds'. The average number of available beds presented may differ from counts published elsewhere. For example, counts based on bed numbers at a specified date such as 30 June may differ from the average available beds over the reporting period. Comparability of bed numbers can be affected by the range and types of patients treated by a hospital. For example, hospitals may have different proportions of beds available for general versus special purposes (such as beds or cots used exclusively for intensive care). Bed counts also include chairs for same-day admissions.

    Description

In financial year 2023, there were 678 public non-psychiatric hospitals across Australia. That same year, there were 22 public psychiatric hospitals across the country. Hospitals and beds Many of Australia’s public hospitals can be found outside of the major cities. A large number of public hospitals are located in regional and remote areas of the country. Generally speaking, the number of hospitals is proportional to the population size of the state or territory. This is also true of the number of beds in public hospitals, with large states like New South Wales having around 21 thousand beds, while smaller states like Tasmania have only around 1.6 thousand available beds. Doctors and nurses A health care system also requires well-trained medical professionals to function. In Australia, there are a large number of general practitioners who practice in a full-time equivalent role. In addition, the number of registered nurses and midwives in Australia has risen over the years, with around 390 thousand nurses working across the nation in 2023.

    Description

The Australian public health care system is regarded to be among the best in the world and over ten percent of the country’s GDP is spent on health. Nevertheless, as the novel coronavirus spread and put health care resources around the world to the test, Australians were concerned that hospitals and other health services could eventually become overwhelmed. However, as the rate of COVID-19 infections in Australia were on the rise in March 2020, more than half of Australians still rated their health system’s response to the virus as excellent or good.

    Protecting the most vulnerable

Early observations of the virus in China showed that older COVID-19 patients were more likely to require hospitalization and respiration than younger patients and projections from the Australian Department of Health predicted that as many as one in five people with COVID-19 over the age of 80 would be admitted to the ICU. People with chronic health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory conditions were also more likely to require additional medical attention if they contracted COVID-19.

    Availability of health resources

As it became clear that a significant proportion of the world’s population would be exposed to COVID-19, most countries strived to ‘flatten the curve’ through social distancing measures. This concept aimed at delaying the spread of the virus in order ensure that medical facilities would not be overwhelmed and limited resources, such as respirators, would be available when required. Despite Australia’s public hospital system boasting more than 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 of the population in most states and territories, the devastating public health emergency in Italy was a cause for concern. However, the Australian health system’s capacity proved to be adequate even as hospitalizations hit their peak in early April.

    Description

Revenue growth for the Psychiatric Hospitals industry has been sluggish in recent years, constrained by changing government mental health care policies, which are favouring community-based preventative treatments designed to reduce the need for more costly treatment in psychiatric hospitals. These changing policy priorities are reflected in a downwards trend in the number of mental health beds available in public psychiatric hospitals. In some instances, these beds have been replaced by additional beds in specialised psychiatric units or wards within public acute hospitals, although these are not included within the scope of this report. National mental health strategies have focused on prevention, decreasing hospitalisation and increasing the population's general wellbeing. The growing prevalence of community-based treatments and the availability of telehealth services has expanded access to mental health services, with the hope that this will reduce the need for admission to psychiatric hospitals. Community prevention strategies include education and awareness for young people, with such strategies likely to limit demand for psychiatric hospitals, particularly over the long term. Simultaneously, the private sector has assumed a relatively greater role, with mental health bed numbers in private psychiatric hospitals on the rise. This has contributed to a corresponding upwards trend in the number of hospitalisations and patient days, although the COVID-19 outbreak constrained growth. In some instances, potential private patients were reluctant to enter a hospital setting during the pandemic, contributing to lower private hospital admissions. In view of its changing operating environment, growth in industrywide revenue has been negligible at an expected annualised 0.1% over the five years through 2023-24 to total $1.6 billion, including a 2.7% rise anticipated in 2023-24. In the coming years, demand for psychiatric services will continue to shift away from public psychiatric hospitals and towards private psychiatric hospitals, community-based treatments and psychiatric units co-located in general hospitals. Industry revenue is forecast to grow at an annualised 2.7% over the five years through 2028-29 to $1.9 billion. Profit margins will remain constrained by the industry's not-for-profit component.
