    Description

Since the terrorist organization Hamas launched its attacks on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, around 1,200 Israelis died, and 5,431 were injured. Through retaliation attacks by the Israeli armed forces against Hamas in Gaza, 56,156 Palestinians were killed, and 132.239 were injured. As of January 2025, the number of Palestinian deaths in the West Bank was 924, due to the on going conflict. Information on the data situation Data on the number of fatalities and injuries are based on the UNOCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) reporting by both parties to the conflict. The respective data sources were named for the purpose of transparency. It must be stated that in the case of wars and other conflicts, objective data collection is almost impossible, and reports are based on estimates. At the same time, it needs to be noted that some parties to the conflict may use numbers and data selectively for their own agenda. Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7th, 2023 Before October 2023, there had been four wars between Israel and Hamas. The current conflict is already the deadliest, and the death toll is certain to rise. The new escalation of violence in the Middle East started after the militant Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel in the early hours of October 7, 2023. An estimated 2,200 rockets were fired by Hamas from Gaza toward Israeli targets, hitting civilian buildings and military facilities. Hamas fighters entered the Israeli territory, killing around 1,200 of Israeli citizens. In the weeks that followed, the Israeli military conducted an aerial bombardment and launched a ground offensive in Gaza. Humanitarian pauses allowed aid to get into Gaza, but fighting has continued since a weeklong cease-fire ended on December 1, 2023. Operation Iron Swords and the humanitarian situation of Gaza Initially, Israel reacted to the Hamas attacks with further isolation of the Gaza Strip, cutting off the supply of electricity, fuel, and drinking water. As of November 6, 2023, water supply to parts of the Gaza Strip has been resumed. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) summoned the Palestinians to evacuate the northern part of the Gaza Strip towards the south of Gaza in the direction of the Egyptian border. This affects around 1.93 million people out of the 2.06 million inhabitants of Gaza. According to the UN, over one million people are internally displaced inside the Gaza Strip. Some trucks with relief supplies could infrequently enter the territory via the Rafah border from Egypt. This Israeli military operation is one of the longest-lasting in Gaza, and over 6,000 bombs were already dropped by the IDF.

As of January 14, 2025, the UN estimated that around 1.9 million refugees are currently sheltered in school buildings operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Around ** percent of Gaza's total population has been displaced due to the ongoing conflict. This was caused by attacks of radical Islamic Hamas' attacks on Israeli territory and the consequent counterstrikes of the Israeli military. Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023 The radical Islamic Palestinian terror organization Hamas attacked Israel in the early hours of October 7, 2023, on Sabbath - the Jewish day of rest. This strategic attack from Gaza was directed towards Israeli civilians and armed forces. An estimated ***** rockets were fired by Hamas from Gaza toward Israeli targets, hitting civilian buildings and military facilities. Hamas fighters entered the Israeli territory, killing around ***** of Israeli citizens. In the weeks that followed, the Israeli military conducted an aerial bombardment and launched a ground offensive in Gaza. Humanitarian pauses allowed aid to get into Gaza, but fighting has continued since a weeklong cease-fire ended on December 1, 2023. The attacks resulted in a massive escalation of the Middle Eastern conflict, which pushed a political solution further away. The number of civilian casualties in Gaza and Israel is rising each day the conflict continues. Humanitarian situation in Gaza Following Hamas' attacks on Israel, the Israeli military responded with airstrikes against positions of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and cut the region's supply. The Israeli military warned parts of Gaza about their air strikes and urged the population to leave their houses and seek refuge in the centers. Israel isolated the Gaza Strip from the outside world and stopped the supply of electricity, food, and fuel. On October 13, 2023, Israel prompted the Palestinian population of Gaza to vacate the region of northern Gaza. Around one million of the **** million Gazans dwelled in northern Gaza in high density. About half of the Gazan population is underaged. Since the terrorist organization Hamas launched its attacks on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, around ***** Israelis have died, and ***** have been injured. Through retaliation attacks by the Israeli armed forces against Hamas in Gaza, over 47 thousand Palestinians have died, and around 99 thousand have been injured. There were ***** confirmed Palestinians killed in the Westbank through the ongoing conflict. Hamas's attack on Israel was the deadliest so far.

    Abstract

IPUMS-International is an effort to inventory, preserve, harmonize, and disseminate census microdata from around the world. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. The data are coded and documented consistently across countries and over time to facillitate comparative research. IPUMS-International makes these data available to qualified researchers free of charge through a web dissemination system.

The IPUMS project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Population Center, National Statistical Offices, and international data archives. Major funding is provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Additional support is provided by the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research, the Minnesota Population Center, and Sun Microsystems.

    Description

Since Israel's establishment within the Palestinian state in 1948, the relationship between Palestinians and Israelis has been tense and, at times, violent. In the past few years, it has been reported that Israeli citizens have started settlements on Palestinian territory in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. This has led to increased physical violence between Israelis and Palestinians in these zones; however, when considering the technological advantage of Israel over Palestine, the deaths of Palestinians has grown exponentially in recent years. Many of these deaths are made up by non-military Palestinians that have gotten caught in cross fire or exploded by shells. To display this humanitarian crisis, I mapped the current Palestinian territories, separated by major cities. Each of these separated areas holds the total value of Palestinian deaths within from 2019 through the beginning of 2023. These totals can be viewed by clicking on the different colored polygons. Access to medical care is also a pressing issue in Palestine, especially when considering the uptake in violence, so I mapped the known medical sites in each region. The names and types (clinic, hospital, etc.) of these medical sites can be viewed if you click on the white circles containing green crosses.Along with these mapped features, you may view the city-regions containing the highest and lowest sums of death in the book marked section. I also created a bar graph that clearly displays the total number of deaths in each city-region from least to most.Palestinian Administrative Boundaries: Palestinian Subnational Administrative Boundaries obtained from The Humanitarian Data Exchange through a file download (https://data.humdata.org/dataset/cod-ab-pse). Health Sites: Palestinian medical sites taken from AmeriGEO using a Geojson URL (https://data.amerigeoss.org/ro/dataset/palestine-healthsites/resource/dce3fa8c-5c41-40d8-9a10-c77b6040f934?view_id=df9e8a7e-1e51-42ac-a2cc-6705bb97c642). Sum of Palestinian Deaths by City-Region: This site provides the Palestinian death count per city/region; I downloaded a file containing these counts. I then used the join tool to join the death count table to the administrative boundaries table using the mutual "City" field. I then used the summarize tool to sum the total number of deaths per city-region, using a graduated color map to display the different values (https://statistics.btselem.org/en/all-fatalities/by-date-of-incident?section=overall&tab=overview).

    Description

    Abstract

The main objective of the PHC-2007 is to provide figures for the Palestinian population and their geographical distribution in accordance with a number of relatively stable basic characteristics to inform socioeconomic development purposes. Preparations for conducting censuses take usually 3-5 years for piloting, testing tools, work plans, human and physical needs and timetable. The census is one of the most important statistical activities as it provides statistical data on the distribution of population, and their demographic, social and economic characteristics in a certain reference period of time for all the individuals within the borders of the state.

    Geographic coverage

    West Bank and Gaza Strip

    Analysis unit

    individual, household

    Universe

The PHC-2007 covered all individuals who were in the Palestinian Territory on the census reference night (30/11-1/12/2007) regardless of nationality and citizenship. It also covered all Palestinians who have usual residence in the Palestinian Territory (including those who were temporarily absent for less than one year for the purpose of visit, tourism, treatment, etc. while their households are still living at their permanent places of residence in the Palestinian Territory). All Palestinian students abroad while their households are still living at their permanent places of residence were also included, in addition to all prisoners and detainees in the Israeli jails regardless of the duration of detention. The census excluded all Palestinians holding identity cards who were absent for more than one year (except for the students), even if their households are still living in their places of residence in the Palestinian Territory

    Kind of data

    Census/enumeration data [cen]

    Sampling procedure

It consists of all the enumerated households in the Census 2007 and who are staying in the west bank at the time of enumeration. We select a systematic random sample from each enumeration area in the Census, and we select a 20% of the total households concluding all the individuals in the household

    Mode of data collection

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

The census questionnaire for the buildings is divided into four parts: Part one: includes identification data, such as: governorate, locality name, locality code, booklet no. in locality, total booklets in locality, no. of completed pages in booklet, enumeration area.
Part two: includes data for all buildings, such as: 1. Building Serial No. in the page 2. Building No. in Enumeration Area 3. Name of the Owner of the Building or Building Name and Address 4. Description

    Abstract

The survey is designed to collect, analyze, and disseminate demographic and health data pertaining to the Palestinian population living in the Palestinian Territory, with a focus on demography, fertility, infertility, family planning, unmet needs, and maternal and child health, in addition to youth and the elderly. The 2010 survey includes new sections and elements, such as basic health and socio-economic information on different groups within the population: ever married woman less than 55 years and children aged less than five years, child labor in the age 5-14 years, child discipline 2-14 years, person education 5-24 years, youth aged 15-29 years, and elderly people over the age of 60.

    Geographic coverage

The Data are representative at region level (West Bank, Gaza Strip), locality type (urban, rural, camp) and governorates

    Analysis unit

    Household, individual

    Universe

The survey covered all the Palestinian households who are a usual residence in the Palestine.

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

Target Population The target population of the survey consists of all the following groups: 1- All Palestinian households normally residing in the Palestinian Territory. 2- Females aged 15 - 54 years. 3- Elderly people aged 60 or over. 4- Children aged 0 - 14 years and divided into the following categories: 0-5 years, 2-14 years, 5-14 years, with parts of the questionnaire customized for each group. 5- Youth aged 15 - 29 years and divided into the following categories: 15-24 years, 25-29 years, with parts of the questionnaire customized for youth.

Sampling Frame We relied on sampling frames established in PCBS and basically comprising the list of enumeration areas. (The enumeration area is a geographical area containing a number of buildings and housing units of about 120 housing units on average.)

The total frame consists of the following two parts:

1- West Bank and Gaza Sampling Frame: containing enumeration areas drawn up in 2007. In the West Bank: each enumeration area consists of a list of households with identification data to ascertain the address of individual households. In Gaza: each enumeration area contains a list of housing units with addresses to ascertain the address of individual households, plus identification data of the housing units.

2- Jerusalem Sampling Frame (inside checkpoints): contains enumeration areas only, geographically divided with information about the total number of households in these areas. However, there is no detailed information about addresses inside enumeration areas and the size of the enumeration area can be ascertained without the ability to identify the addresses.

Design Strata In the survey, two variables were chosen to divide the population into strata, depending on the homogeneity of parts of the population. Previous studies have shown that Palestinian households may be divided as follows: 1- Governorates: there are 16 governorates in the Palestinian Territory: 11 governorates in the West Bank and 5 in the Gaza Strip. 2- Locality Types: there are three types : urban, rural and refugee camps. All the available frames contain the strata variables. Sample Size We use the following formula to estimate the sample size:

        n  =  [(1.15) f(1-r) (r)4]
      [(nh) p2(r0.07)]

Where: - n: sample size requested for the main indicator or main estimate - 4: is a factor to achieve a 95 percent level of confidence - r is the predicted or anticipated prevalence (coverage rate) for the indicator - being estimated - 1.15 is the factor necessary to raise the sample size by 20 percent for non-response - f is the design effect - 0.07r is the margin of error to be tolerated at the 95 percent level of confidence, defined as 7 percent of r (7 percent represents the relative sampling error of r) - p is the proportion of the total population upon which the indicator, r, is based - nh is the average household size

To estimate the sample size of the survey we rely on the percentage of children under 5 years who suffer from stunting. We consider it as the main indicator for the survey (r) and it equals 10.2% (from MICS3 data -2006). Also, by returning to census data in 2007 we find the percentage of children aged 0 - 4 years =14.1%. Finally, the sample size = 15,355

Sample Design and Type After determining the sample size, which equals 15456 households, we selected a probability sample - a multi-stage stratified cluster sample as follows: 1- First stage: selecting a sample of clusters (enumeration areas) using PPS without replacement method to obtain 644 enumeration areas from the total enumeration area frame. 2- Second stage: selecting 24 households from each selected enumeration area of the first stage and using the systematic sample method. When reaching households, we enumerate all the targeted individuals from the groups: women (15-54) years, elderly aged 60 and more, children aged 0-5 years. 3- Third stage: selecting one child of age group 2-14 years for part of the questionnaire and one young person from the 15-29 age group to answer the youth attachment in the questionnaire. We use the Kish table to select one person at random.

    Mode of data collection

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

The design of the survey complied with the standard specifications of health surveys previously implemented by PCBS. In addition, the survey included indicators of MICS4 to meet the needs of all partners.

    Description

    Abstract

The Palestinian Family Survey (MICS) was carried out in 2010 by the Palestinians Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), with UNICEF’s and UNPA’s financial and technical support. The Palestinian Family Survey is a national household survey programme developed by PCBS based on international standard demographic health surveys as well as MICS surveys. The Palestinian Family Survey was conducted as part of the fourth global round of MICS surveys (MICS4). The survey provides up to date information on the health, economic, and social situation of women and children; in addition to providing information on characteristics of the family in which each woman and child live as well as the main indicators about the categories of youth and elderly. This offers a study, analysis, and understanding of the actual indicators and their relationship with demographic, social, economic, and environmental variables. The survey also measures the major indicators which allows countries to monitor their progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) besides measuring the level of fulfilling other internationally agreed upon commitments; in addition to enabling policy and decision makers, and intervention programs to evaluate the plans and programs, amend them, and locate the areas of intervention based on the results. The carry out of the survey also aims at updating the databases on women and children as well as building and enhancing the technical staff capabilities of carrying out surveys and analyzing data out of them. The Palestinian Family survey conducted in 2010 was led by a technical team from the Palestinians Central Bureau of Statistics, UNICEF, and UNFPA, and Ministry of Health.

The Palestinian Family Survey was conducted for a representative sample of the State of Palestine. The survey was designed as a multi- stage cluster covering all the State of Palestine including two geographic areas; The West Bank which included 11 governorates: (Jenin, Tubas, Tulkarm, Qalqiliya, Nablus, Ramallah & Al-Bireh, Jerusalem, Jericho & Al-Aghwar, Bethlehem, Hebron) and the Gaza Strip which include governorates (Gaza, Khan Yunis, Rafah, Deir El Balah and North Gaza). Of the 15,355 households selected in the sample, results showed that the number of occupied households were 14,817 of which 13,629 households were successfully interviewed during the survey, giving a response rate of 92 percent. There were 13,982 women in the 15-49 age group of which a total of 11,173 eligible women were successfully interviewed, achieving a response rate of 80 percent. In addition, 8,024 children were identified in the household questionnaire for whom a total of 7,900 mothers or child caretakers were interviewed. The total response rates of individual interviews are calculated as 73 percent of eligible women and 90 percent with children under 5 respectively. The total households interviewed reached (13,629) households, which included 81,510 individuals members who were listed. Of these, 41,379 were males and 40,131 were females, yielding a sex ratio of 103 males per hundred females.

    Geographic coverage

West Bank: Jenin, Tubas, Tulkarm, Qalqiliya, Nablus, Ramallah & Al-Bireh, Jerusalem, Jericho & Al-Aghwar, Bethlehem, Hebron Gaza Strip: Gaza, Khan Yunis, Rafah, Deir El Balah and North Gaza

    Analysis unit

    • Individuals
    • Households

    Universe

The survey covered all de jure household members (usual residents), all women aged between 15-54 years, all children under 5 living in the household, all youth aged 15-29 years, and all elderly (60+ years old).

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

The primary objective of the sample design for the Palestinian Family Survey was to produce statistically reliable estimates of most indicators, at the national level, for urban and rural areas, refugee camps and for the sixteen governorates (11 in the West Bank and 5 in the Gaza Strip). Urban and rural areas and the refugee camps in each of the sixteen governorates were defined as the sampling strata.

A multi-stage, stratified cluster sampling approach was used for the selection of the survey sample.

The sampling frames used has been established in PCBS,and basically comprises the list of enumeration areas. (The enumeration area is a geographical area containing a number of buildings and housing units of about 120 housing units on average.)

The total frame consists of the following two parts: 1- West Bank and Gaza Sampling Frame: containing enumeration areas drawn up in 2007. In the West Bank: each enumeration area consists of a list of households with identification data to ascertain the address of individual households. In Gaza: each enumeration area contains a list of housing units with addresses to ascertain the address of individual households, plus identification data of the housing units. 2- Jerusalem Sampling Frame (J1): contains enumeration areas only, geographically divided with information about the total number of households in these areas. However, there is no detailed information about addresses inside enumeration areas and the size of the enumeration area can be ascertained without the ability to identify the addresses.

Both frames were used in the sample design and selection and therefore, the sample will differ from one frame to another. Also, the method of reaching the sample units by interviewers may differ.

In the survey, two variables were chosen to divide the population into strata, depending on the homogeneity of parts of the population. Previous studies have shown that Palestinian households may be divided as follows: 1- Governorates: there are 16 governorates in the State of Palestine: 11 governorates in the West Bank and 5 in the Gaza Strip. 2- Locality Types: there are three types : urban, rural and refugee Camps.

After determining the sample size, which equals 15,355 households, we selected a probability sample - a multi-stage stratified cluster sample as follows: 1- First stage: selecting a sample of clusters (enumeration areas) using PPS without replacement method to obtain 644 enumeration areas from the total enumeration area frame. 2- Second stage: selecting 24 households from each selected enumeration area of the first stage and using the systematic sample method. When reaching households, all individuals were interviewed from the eligible groups i.e. women 15-54 years, elderly aged 60 years or above and children aged 0-4 years 3- Third stage: selecting one child of age group 2-14 years for part of the questionnaire and one young person from the 15-29 age group to answer the youth attachment in the questionnaireThe Kish table was used to select one child at random. 4- Also in the women's health section, the questionnaire was administered to a maximum of three randomly selected women aged 15-54 years irrespective of their marital status living in the households. In the case where 3 or less women aged 15-54 were listed in the HH all women were interviewed. As for Households with 4 or more women in this age group 3 were interviewed based on the availability of these women in the household at the time of the interview. The unselected women were further treated in the dataset as non-response cases. As for Households with 4 or more women in this age group 3 were interviewed based on the availability of these women in the household at the time of the interview. The unselected women were further treated in the dataset as non response cases. 5- The elderly age 60 years and above questionnaire was administered for all elderly persons within the household. 6- The Youth questionnaire was administered by randomly selecting a youth member from households with odd household numbers assigned at the enumeration area level. Within this sample female and male youth were alternatively selected.

The sample was allocated with proportionally using the design strata of the governorates and the locality type according to the proportion of the population in the 2007 Census.

The sampling procedures are more fully described in "Palestinian Family Survey 2010 - Final Report" pp.167-171.

    Mode of data collection

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

The design of the survey complied with the standard specifications of health surveys previously implemented by PCBS. In addition, the survey included indicators of MICS4 to meet the needs of all partners.

Five sets of questionnaires were used in the survey, three are considered as main questionnaires and are based on MICS4 standard questionnaires, viz.: 1) a household questionnaire which was used to collect information on all de jure household members (usual residents), the household, and the dwelling; and a section on general health and knowledge of HIV and AIDS adminstered to three randomly selected women 15-54 years in each houehold, irrespective of marital status, 2) a women’s questionnaire administered in each household to all ever-married women aged 15-54 years (to allow for comparison with the previous survey, however, all the tables and analysis were undertaken for the women aged 15-49 only; 3) an under-5 questionnaire, administered to mothers or caretakers for all children under-5 years living in the household. The two additional country specific questionnaires were, 4) the youth aged 15-29 years old questionnaire; and 5) the elderly (60+ years old) questionnaire.

    • Household Questionnaire: Covers demographic and educational characteristics, chronic disease, smoking, discipline of children (2-14 years), child labor (5-14 years), education of children (5-24 years) and housing characteristics. • Women’s Health (15-54 years) Questionnaire: regardless of marital status, awareness about
